So, this kid, Zac Sunderland sailed around the world, all alone! When he started the voyage 13 months ago, he was only 16 years old. Sunderland set the new record for youngest person to sail around the world alone. That is a pretty awesome feat for a young adult.
Zac Sunderland saved up his money to buy his own sail boat that cost him around $6,000. The 17 year old returned home July 16th, 2009, to the Marina Del Rey dock, although he lives in Thousand Oaks, CA. Sunderland survived on eating non-perishable food like Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches, canned tuna, and beef jerky. He would stop at ports, shower, and stock up on more food.
The scariest part of Sunderland's adventure was being watched by pirates. His dad taught him how to load and fire a gun, for emergencies, while over a satellite phone. The Sunderland family is happy he is back, and Zac is happy to be able to see his friends again.
