What Would Jesus Cut?

Finally people are asking the right question. What our government does determines how we as a people are judged.

We are told that we all need to sacrifice to get us through this fiscal crisis, but those that are well off do not sacrifice. The new Republican budget plan kills Medicare and asks the old and infirm to pay $6,000 more so the rich can have their taxes lowered from 35% to 24%.

Is that who we are as a people? Why are there no cuts to the military budget which has increased 150% since 2001, and which the military even admits is dripping in waste and laden with un-needed programs to fight non existent enemies. Yet school funding is cut 25% and the WIC program to help starving babies is slashed.

The polluting fossil fuel industries Are making record profits, and yet their hundreds of billions of corporate welfare are untouched while renewable energy programs are slashed 70%.

Is that what we the American people want? NO! Between 65% and 81% of the American People in polls think the rich should be taxed more not less.

About two thirds of the people don't want their Medicare destroyed and would rather have the military budget cut.

We are a Christian Nation and we care for those in need. Most people in this country think that there should be a safety net to catch the vulnerable, because we were taught by Jesus that: "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of the least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!"

13 months ago: Altruist it is getting to be more and more a bunch of greedy mongrels running our Nation. It goes for every one of them, unless they stand up for the people and show some kind of courage in the face of this slaughter of the American Nation.
I see more and more Professors from colleges and authorities on the economy speaking out. I don't know if they have any influence or clout to do anything. It is frightening to see a run away Government. Obama is useless as the Republicans. They have done nothing for their Country. Why should Obama hold the power of office any more? He wants our vote but yet proves himself each day by his words that he is not on the side of the people. I'm baffled as to whose side he is on. That word "sacrifice" is being used as intimidation. Thanks for that great "stand up" comment today.

13 months ago: Sunny2, I think you might get some better info on what the President has done by reading some of the websites that chronicle all that he has done. It is precisely what he has done and had planned to do that made him the voracious enemy of the GOP which was co-opted as the party of the elite conservative rich leaving the Democrats to the middle class and the poor by default whether we shared all of their core values or not. (I am one of the independents in the middle class who tries to vote for ideas instead of people.) In any case, the President has done a lot more for the people than is talked about in the media – partly because the media is mostly owned by the elite rich who can barely decide what to cover to ensure their station in power and wealth. Do you talk about the thousands of jobs being created every month if that means Obama might get re-elected which could mean your taxes will go up? Selfish, self-centered people are who are ruining this country – people who talk a good game about being Christians, but don't exhibit a millionth of the compassion of historical Jesus. People who feel it is their calling to force their ideology on everyone else without concern for the greater good. People who deny the dangers of destroying this gracious planet and believe it was God's will we exploit it. And on and on, but I think the President has a lot better ideas of how to get our nation back on track than any other potential candidate.

13 months ago: Colorranter....I believe as you do on much of what you say.
I know what the President has accomplished and that is why I didn't want to give up on him, and I still don't. I'm hoping something will turn around. How can he pull a rabbit out of a hat at this stage of the game. He needs to do something for the people to show some progress in a big way. My daughter is lucky to be working and hold a pretty good job, but it isn't what she does and what she paid for her education. Out of all of this can come good, but you can get burned and waste a lot of time. Jobs out there are few for the people who need them. Lots of jobs for the very skilled so that leaves the ordinary guy out there to suffer the consequences. CorlorRanter it's good to have ideas, but the President at times does not appear to be strong. Those ideas have to be turned into a reality. There have always been "Sunday Christians" and that is the extent of it. All the other days of the week they are evil beings. I listen to people talk, and they can believe in what they want, but I always remain solid in my beliefs. I hope you are right about the Pres getting the Nation back on track because we don't have much choice in other candidates. It goes from bad to worse.

The problem is that even though we still have "In God We Trust" on the money, the money is really what is worshipped as god.

Almost every problem on this planet can be traced to the selfishness and greed of humanity. The masses suffer while Babylon extends its tendrils to choke the life out of and pervert anything good. No wonder the world is in chaos.

That's not the way it's supposed to be folks.

Obedience to Jesus' teachings demands that we integrate prayer, worship, evangelism, AND social transformation. One should never be so heavenly minded that they are of no earthly good.

We can never be complacent with the status quo, nor should we stand idly by and watch the world go to hell in a hand basket. If we are not actively fighting injustice and oppression we are part of the problem not part of the solution.

"He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it." -- Martin Luther King, Jr.

I agree with Huey that many on the right give lip service to Christianity but they really worship the golden calf or mamon.

Obama is at fault because he is basically a centrist and starts all of his negotiation policies from the center. Then because the right absolutely refuses to compromise the results are right wing policies that favor big Industry and the rich.

We no longer have a democracy because all politicians have to spend 80% of their time begging for money from the corporate and the affluent so they can get elected. Then when in power the rich and the corporations call in their markers to get special favors.

The Democrats are not as bad as the Republicans because much of their support comes from unions who represent the people, but the Republicans have sold their souls to the corporate affluent and are attempting to destroy the unions so they have no competition.

The right wing has destroyed our Democracy by 1st getting their activist court to declare corporations people who's spending is protected by the 1st amendment. Then with the Citizens United case they were able to eliminate the last vestiges of campaign reform laws and allow corporations to outright buy votes with unlimited and undisclosed spending to influence elections, and policy.

13 months ago: The problems with Medicare and Social Security is not so much that there are not enough people paying into the system, because there are more young people than old. The problem is that the old folks had good paying jobs of $45/hr or $50/hr and now it takes three times as many young people to put the same amount into the system because they are being paid minimum wage.

My union compadres are the ones that insured safe working conditions, decent hours, some vacation time, health insurance, a decent pension and a livable wage.

These are things that all workers aspire to, and the unions are the only ones that fight the corporations which if they had no competition, would make America a polluted cesspool with slave and child labor like we see in China.

Unions improve wages and working conditions for all workers even if they don't believe in unions. They raise all boats. All most workers want is a decent job with a living wage. If the right takes away our rights to collective bargaining, everyone in the country will suffer, and as the union tide goes out all workers will suffer.
13 months ago: Whoa just a minute. A decent pension? Really? Did I not read a comment from you that said something along the lines of....

and evne with the COLA I only get 400 dollars per month.

Is that on top of any other subsidies? Are you over 65?

13 months ago: Do y'all know what Jesus did cut? He cut the New Covenant. He cut it in His very own Blood.

That is the most important cut in the universe that I am aware of.

How we all respond to that cut is the most significant decision in our lives. Why? Because it has eternal consequences, that's why.

It is necessary to deal with the rest. The rest is very important. However, the rest is temporal rather than eternal.

13 months ago: Huey, I agree. Since we are on our own, he also left us with a fighting instinct to battle oppressors who try to enforce issues loaming in front of us that can and might bring us to the eve of destruction if Government had their way. Everything that is rotten makes their rounds in life and comes right back again for us to make a stand against. Sunny

I don't know and neither do you - or anyone else here. And anyone who DOES think they know is either a full blown barking moonbat loony tune or an egotist nonpareil.

But when you total up all the entitlement programs, DOD's budget is a drop in the bucket. But by all means, slash DOD spending. Dump tens of thousands of into the workforce. Give EVEN MORE people - highly trained, highly skilled, highly disciplined people who have "seen the elephant" many, many times - a reason to hate the left.

Ignore the lessons of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Tax the living daylights out of the rich. Heck! Tax 'em into penury. Raise taxes everywhere but on the people on the dole and by all means increase THEIR numbers.

Then PRAY those chickens do not come home to roost in YOUR lifetime. Because the reckoning from that will be BIBLICAL in scope.

Meanwhile, I and mine will safe and secure in our freehold, far from large population centers, with ample water and shelter. And ample means to hold our own.
13 months ago: No kidding...How about we cut all of the funding and bail-outs of the U.S. Postal Service? Really? Do they need to make 38 dollars per hour to deliver junk mail?

and why do we need to bail-it out? Talk about government employees hitting the soup line.......
