This Summer in Pop Music

The summer started on GOAT, a Government Owned Alien Territory in space as bony, emaciated Mother Monster gave birth to a new breed of album- Born This Way. With its single, eponymously titled, becoming the gay anthem to end all anthems, and sending conservatives everywhere into epileptic shock, the summer began in typical Gaga fashion: extravagant, loud, controversial, filled with sex symbols out the wazoo and campy dance moves galore. Obviously, pop hasn't changed a thing since Madonna.

(In fact, some days, I'll turn on the radio and I swear I can still hear "Express Yourself" playing in the background. Oh wait, that's just "Born This Way".)

Not to be outdone, Beyoncé releases 4 one month later to moderate success. It seems the "Single Ladies" are no longer 'running the world'. But regardless of the less than stellar performance of her album and accompanying singles, we're all sure someone will throw Beyoncé a Grammy or three later this year.

(We're saving a Kelly Rowland mention for the parentheses. Keyword: Irrelevant. Please get the "Motivation" to release your album a little outside of Beyoncé's wake or just remain content with being the Destiny's Child backup dancer nobody cares about.)

The big name this summer though, is perhaps Katy Perry, who started partying last summer with the release of her album Teenage Dream and hasn't stopped until "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)". All of the singles from her third studio album made it to the No. 1 on the Hot 100, which means she's tied with Michael for having the most singles off the same album reach the top spot.

Comparing red versus blue, the red-headed Rihanna has had less success keeping her album afloat, despite it being released more than six months after Teenage Dream. It seems Rihanna will be crying on her "California King Bed" as the the album's sales continue to dwindle. Cheers, I'll drink to that.

Move out the way. Adele coming through. The dark horse diva from the UK doesn't have to sing about the money to be "Rollin' in the Deep". Topping charts in just about any country that has one and selling about as many millions of albums as the title of the record - 21, Adele has parted the seas of pop. It's not the mind-numbing beats or the 50 cent rappers that will make it rain, but soulful music sung with passion. You mean you actually have to be able to sing to sell records? What is this world coming to?

Oh, I almost forgot- Britney Spears released an album this year too. That's pretty much it. *hairography*

As for the rest of the top 40...it has become clear that "Talentless is the new Talented".

Personally I am waiting for my other favorite female powerhouse singer (Amy Lee) to release her band's (Evanescence) new album which I have been awaiting eagerly for nearly 5 years.
