The Pope Is Telling Christians to Increase Taxes on The Rich

There are 2.1 billion Christians in the world, one third of all religious people. Of that 2.1 billion, 1.2 billion are Catholic. The Pope is the spiritual leader of 57% of the Christians in the world.

The Vatican has recently released Pope Benedict XVI's third encyclical, entitled "Caritas in Veritate," or "Charity in Truth". The Pope spent two years writing this encyclical.

Papal Encyclicals, by the way are pretty big deals. It isn't just one guy's opinion. This is just one step away from God telling the flock what to think. Even when they are not ex cathedra, they can nonetheless be sufficiently authoritative to end theological debate on a particular question.

The Pope called for a reform of the United Nations so there could be a unified "global political body" that allowed the less powerful of the earth to have a voice, and he called on rich nations to help less fortunate ones. "In the search for solutions to the current economic crisis, development aid for poor countries must be considered a valid means of creating wealth for all," he wrote.

The encyclical also contained elements "very critical" of how the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank "have required cuts in social spending in the third world." The Pope lamented the decline of the social welfare state and praised the "importance" of labor unions to protect workers. Without stable work, he noted, people lose hope and tend not to get married and have children.

The Pope called for "greater social responsibility" on the part of business. "Once profit becomes the exclusive goal, if it is produced by improper means and without the common good as its ultimate end, it risks destroying wealth and creating poverty." He urged financiers in particular to "rediscover the genuinely ethical foundation of their activity."

Of course Christ's main message was to care less about wealth and care more for the less fortunate. In my opinion, the Pope in his 144 page document, which was updated to speak to the current economic crisis, seems to be berating the conservatives in Europe and America. He seems to be saying stop coddling the rich, create jobs, and help those most in need.

I expect Fox News and Hate Radio to brand Pope Benedict a dirty communist any time now.

Another interesting fact is how atheists suddenly want to start quoting a religious leader when he's saying something that fits their agenda.
9 months ago: Whoa! Just a minute. You mean Altruist is not a Catholic? I could have sworn he gave his church all of his money to dispose of as they feel fit to ornamate the shrines.

Dang it. Sorry. I got the Pope and the Catholic Church confused with his God.

Obama and the current White House.

Sorry Lord. My mistake.

How come you haven't written a post about Abortion lately?

Huh?

Is this sort of like how Conservatives quote the Constitution only when it aligns with their views and agenda (while ignoring the rest of the document)?????

9 months ago: Ok, while I agree that all politicians do this I happen to find the Conservative actions the most egregious.

It's not an issue of interpretation either.

Let's for example look at the following issue which is central to the campaigns of several tea party members and republicans (Gay Marriage/Gay Rights). Michelle Bachman and Rick Perry especially have been active on this argument saying that it should be law that marriage is defined as man and women.

The Constitution says:
"make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

However Bachman and Perry are driven by their own religious views of homosexuality and feel that it should be a law because its how they feel. This is a clear affront to the liberty of anyone who is Gay. There are religions that openly accept Gays, marry gay couples etc etc. Making a law (or amendment) would prohibit the free exercise of these people's religion, while at the same time establish that Michelle Bachman's religion is that of the nation of as a whole.

Immediate family members are banned from intermarrying in all states. Polygamy is also banned by Federal law. Are such laws religion based, or based upon the expense such unions would add to the public?

I haven't bothered to check out Bachmann's or Perry's interpretation of why homosexual unions should be illegal, due to the fact that there's not a snowball's chance I would vote for either one of them.

With the "Freedom of Religion" argument, if the church was the "Church of Homosexual Marriage", then freedom of religion might apply. As it is, saying a church accepts those who are in gay unions is the same as saying the church accepts those who just live together out of wedlock. I wouldn't say that the church is promoting gay unions as a preferred lifestyle. I think I could probably find a church that would accept me even if I had a proclivity for peeing on public sidewalks. Doesn't mean it should be legal.

The freedom of religion argument has grounds. Preventing churches from marrying gay couples if they choose to is inhibiting the free practice of that religion. Equal rights means equal for all...not just right wing, evangelical Christians.

The point of the argument is that those candidates and many others are campaign on the word of wanting to uphold the Constitution....yet when it comes to their own oppressive religious views they are willing to trash that same Constitution so that they can feel better about themselves. The Church has no right to govern in this country...that was part of the reason the founders came here in the first place.

If you don't like gay marriage there is a simple solution: Don't marry a Gay person...

What religious hatred are people espousing in preventing these lovebirds from getting married? Shouldn't the Constitution protect their freedom to marry whomever they choose? Or are there other reasons besides religious oppression of freedom that prompted these prohibitions?

Polygamy is ok now, because some churches recognize the union of a man to more than one wife at the same time? Should he be allowed to practice his religion free from federal interference?

LDS churches across the nation are coming under fire for marrying (multiple) underage girls, but it's part of their religion. Why are they being persecuted and prosecuted? Does the Constitution grant freedom to practice religion in any way you want?

The ability to think freely is central to Liberty (in my opinion)

Amen, I agree. That's why I abhor most organized religions, political parties, and agenda driven organizations.

One blog answered that the art, the manuscripts, the cathedrals are all public museums open to the public. Why not sell all of the art in all of the museums to help the poor? Because they want to inspire the poor. http://greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetc...

I am of the camp (or I was when I believed), that it was better to worship god's works in nature than to be in a man made edifice. What about all of the televangelists and the crystal cathedral? That is why if I were leaning to any organized religion I would go with the Buddhists. They actually practice what they preach.
9 months ago: You liberals wear me out Al.

The dang pope is talking about individual charity and kindness.

He is saying nothing about losers/tagalongs in society trying to use everyone else's money to help those in need.

Gag me with a spoon.

He is talking to the nations who are enforcing austerity measures on the needy and he is speaking to the major institutions, the IMF, the bankers, and Wall Street . The folks who are hogging all of the wealth and trying to get the poor and the middle class to pay the bills that they and the rich have accumulated.

The Pope knows that labor unions help the people while the greedy powerful are harming them with their failed economic policies.
