As most of the loyal followers on this site know I have a garden. Well at least the conservatives. My plot of dirt is not a huge garden but is produces more than my family can eat.

Where does all of that ''spoilage'' go? Uh, neighbors and friends. You measly little leftists want to proclaim to the world you about being GREEN? Please enlighten all of us conservatives on your garden.

Please let RED, OOTB, GREGORIE or myself know if you are actually green and grow at least "SOME" of your own food. Or, did you just dispose of another WalMart shopping bag from the produce section?

22 months ago: Oh yeah. Just so you leftist know. My next venture is a bee hive. A Republican Bee Hive. I can't wait until the Queen can cross direct from the Mean Greens and the Greenie Meanies.
22 months ago: We've already planted seeds to sprout indoors for Canteloupe, maters, green beans, corn, okra, more maters, lettuce, squash, pumpkins, watermelon, etc.

I'll betcha no liberals even know where the dirt is outside their kitchen windows.

22 months ago: I am glad that you on the right are finally becoming tree hugging earth lovers as we have been advocating for quite a while. Change starts in the home.

You start with a simple garden, then you decide to do away with pesticides and go organic, then you realize that the chemical companies are spraying poisons all over the place, that it is getting in the water, and making hermaphroditic fish and frogs, and effecting humans.

Next thing you know you are trying to ban aerial spraying because the overspray is killing your children and you try to shut down the chemical plants that are dumping toxic sludge in your stream.

And before you know it you will be joining the Democratic Party and be hugging trees. You GO TCG!

22 months ago: So does this mean you have a garden? We have one!!! Tomatoes, Portuguese flat beans, all sorts of good stuff!
22 months ago: Yeah, you might say that. My next venture is finishing a climate controlled "greehouse" with A/C for the summer (to grow fall crops) and Heat for the winter (to grow spring crops). I already have a large stock of tempered double pane lites. So Tom? Your also a "Mean Green Republican"?
22 months ago: Al, I think I have already spoken to aerial spraying in this post...

Oh, your speaking to commercial spraying. Sorry!

22 months ago: So you going to invite our politically disparate Rant Rave family to your spread for some home grown eats? Be fascinating to see how we all get along (or don't) in the flesh to speak. I bet SS would love that bowl of fresh greens - speaking of, where is SS?
22 months ago: I already told SS that if/when he visits I will give him a bucket and point to the garden.

My guess is he is looking for the 6 recent posts on "Strip Club Ban in Iceland: Fundamentalists & Feminists Happy".

22 months ago: Yeah, those are my 'six' recent posts - got a posting error when I submitted it and so I rinsed and repeated not realizing it was posting to the board (but still not readable) - Alex is looking into the problem.
22 months ago: You willing to eat "southern"?

22 months ago: You mean this kind of "southern":

or this kind:

22 months ago: The second would be closer. Although you left out the fried okra, corn on the cob, potato pancakes and my favortie fried liver and onions with a huge baked potato. Good thing we now have free health care.
22 months ago: Yum.

22 months ago: it's all good, especially when it's fried - liver and onions was a staple when I was growing up.
22 months ago: I was trying to get you to say "with gravy". So, you really are a good ol' southern boy. Misguided at times but still remember your roots.
22 months ago: Wow, I'm impressed. Looks like most of the regular RantRavers have gardens. Most of my greens come from the green behind our house (the rest comes from an organic CSA share. CSA rocks!)
22 months ago: CSA? You still don't grow anything do you?

"Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer"

We call those "farmers markets" and roadside vendors.

Why make it sound like your even slightly GREEN?
22 months ago: Try re-reading my comment. You missed the part where I said "Most of my greens come from the green behind our house." We have a very extensive garden, thank you, and most of our veggies come from it. We also like CSA (which stands for Community Supported Agriculture, something I'd think conservatives could get behind), so the rest of our veggies come from a CSA farm share. We very rarely have to get any from the supermarket.

22 months ago: TCG have you ever heard of earth tubes to cool your house or in this case greenhouse? Get a bunch of PVC pipe and make a manifold and bury it beneath 4-5 ft. of dirt, and the soil there will remain close(12' to be real close) to the yearly average so you can suck air through in the summer and it comes out 60 degrees. Use a thermal chimney (Black stovepipe) that gets hot, to suck the air out of the greenhouse and you won't need a fan or AC if the doors and windows are sealed. This will also work so you don't have to heat it in the winter along with lots of thermal mass. Phase change materials work best for thermal storage. Try paraffin as the cheapest, you can add chemicals to tune it to the temp range you want..
22 months ago: How does humidity factor in to the underground heat exchanger? Will the exchanger collect moisture? It gets really hot here and the humidity adds another 15 degrees to the "feel like" temps. I might have to bury it more than 12 inches (probably 36 inches) though and add a moisture collector and drain with a clean out. What is the exchange rate of the air by size of the exchanger? I'm open to suggestions.
