A Grande Starbucks Caffe Latte costs $3.00 – and has 11 grams of fat and 234 calories. If a person drinks a latte every morning on their way to work, it adds up to approximately $765 per year – not to mention 2805 grams of fat and 59,670 calories!

Think about how often you buy magazines, fast food, bottled water, and so on. Don’t even get me started about the yearly cost of cigarettes. These little costs add up, and before you know it, you’re barely making your rent.

There’s a term for this phenomenon: financial wizard David Bach calls it “the Latte Factor.” Yep, he’s even trademarked the phrase “Latte Factor” and he’s got a book out about how to get out of debt by ditching the little purchases in your life. The weight loss is merely a wonderfully positive side effect.

If you’re nickel and diming yourself to death, STOP! David Bach suggests tracking your expenses for a week to identify your personal Latte Factor – the thing that chips away at your bank account, day after day. Once you’ve identified your Latte Factor habit, you can cut back or eliminate it 100 percent.

If you take that money and sock it away in a savings account – or even your sock drawer – you’re going to be well on your way out of debt. Kick that Latte Factor in the butt, and start paying off those credit cards.

I’ve linked to David Bach’s Latte Factor Calculator on the left. You can use it to easily identify those things in your life that are dragging you down. Hey, who knows? You could quit eating Twinkies, lose a few pounds, and start saving for a yacht.

24 months ago: Well I would have to cut alcohol out and shoot myself in the head.
24 months ago: Me too! I don't drink coffee, my magazines come in the mail, water comes from the tap not a bottle and I don't eat out more than once a month, if that. Anything I trim off the snack budget will be added back on at the dinner table to keep the calorie count steady. Guess I can make the dog hunt for her own dinner......
24 months ago: I agree...I buy star bucks coffee because it really is one of the best... Seattle's Best being a very close second....but I buy the beans at Walmart were I can get a lb for 7 dollars, and that lb will last me two weeks. Tastes the same...

24 months ago: Yes when you cut junk foods out, you will do both: Save money and increase your health.

This is no surprise to anyone.

But who in this world is able to cut out 100% of his junk foods?

We are an addicted society. There are no longer any supermen, that can claim to be 100% pure natural.

In fact, even foods labeled as natural foods, come with some unnatural product in it.

The only thing a person can do is try as much as their will power, will allow to cut down to where they are happy or content.

THE 100% NATURAL PEOPLE DIED MANY DECADES AGO.

22 months ago: I wrote down all my expenses for a year, because I was in university and didn't want to be forced to work in a bar nor build up debts. I knew I could spend about 7 pounds a day including travel expenses etc. http://debbiedoeslondon.blogspot.com/200...

Somehow, I ended up living on one loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter a week, so that I could splurge in the weekends.

Don't know if that's a healthy way to go about it...
