The Critics of Scientology: The Truth

Once, it was impossible to speak out against the organization called the Church of Scientology without being exposed to harassment and attack by their Office of Special Affairs (OSA). It was the duty of the OSA to use any methods available to seek the destruction of the organization's critics. Anyone who left the organization was branded a Suppressive Person, and their peers told that these ex-Scientologists were quitters, had misunderstood words, and had made no progress up the Bridge.

Anonymous, and the Internet, has changed that. Below is a list of those who have left the Church of Scientology and spoken out. The number of those who still remain silent is unknown, estimated at being exponentially greater. Who are these people? Are they really "quitters" or people who had devoted the majority of their adult lives to this cause only to become disillusioned? Were they incapable of understanding basic concepts or highly certified auditors, high ranking individuals, or even directly linked to L Ron Hubbard himself? Were they familiar with at best the introductory texts, or had they been exposed to countless reams of secretive, protected knowledge and advanced to the highest levels?

Almost 350, as of this post, have been identified. More are still coming forward, no longer afraid of being the victim of the Fair Game policy. As collected, many of the names have links alongside them. The original list (regularly updated) can be viewed at the first link attached to this article.

46 months ago: Was Marion Evoy the wife of Larry Evoy, singer and driving force behind Edward Bear? They were a huge band internationaly in the late '60's. Their best remembered song was "Me and You in Mexico". You certainly don't see Larry around the org anymore. What happened to him?

Gregg Hagglund was an effective critic but he is not an ex. He is a concerned citizen.

Most of the people you list seem to be elite Scientologists? Where are the grunts who worked in the trenches?
46 months ago: Many of those who would be termed "grunts", individuals who did in fact choose to leave early on along the Bridge or never attained positions of rank within the organization have tried to put the past behind them and focus on moving forward with their lives. A number of the critics on this list were of that same mentality, preferring to simply be glad they escaped and look forward to the future.

Those who are on this list are ONLY those who have chosen to speak out. Untold numbers of individuals left after only a brief exposure to Scientology, and just as many are still afraid to speak out for fear of retribution by the Office of Special Affairs.

This list is to show that they no longer need to be afraid, that they are not alone, and that Scientology is being rendered powerless to silence the voices of those who dare to make their voices heard.

As to Gregg Hagglund, I am not the originator of the list, but will bring that information to the attention of those who have volunteered to compile this information so we can have accurate records. Appreciate it.
46 months ago: I think that the emphasis must be placed on the fact that these names are those who have chosen to speak out. This is the tip of the iceberg. Many, many more have chosen to leave an autocratic system that requires unquestioned loyalty, "disconnection" from non-member family and friends, phenominally expensive "sermons" to reach higher levels, etc. There have been cases where members have been bankrupted and have sold valuable personal possessions because of continuous demands to purchase more "tech" (books, CDs and DVDs of L Ron Hubbards insane ramblings).
Recent revelations from those who have left the "religion" reveal an autocratic organisation that demands 18 hour work days, cramped, shared living quarters at minimum or no wage, middle age type punishments for the most mundane of "crimes".
It is time that this organisation is disbanded and that the senior members are brought before the courts to explain why this sort of thing is allowed to take place.
Thsi is not an attack on a religion (people must be allowed to worship as they see fit), but an attack on a scam that destroys lives, families and relationships.

46 months ago: I keep thinking of John Cleese's line from the Piranha Brothers skit, "Soon, even the police had to stand up and take notice". The stories that are coming out now came out to me in various forms at least thirty years ago. I think the heart of it is this-- It is difficult and expensive to achieve a conviction. I hope things work out in France and Belgium, it might inspire other Western nations to follow.
46 months ago: The nonsense critics come up with. "Once, it was impossible to speak out against the organization called the Church of Scientology without being exposed to harassment and attack" What planet hae you been living on? Alt.Religion.Scientology has criticized for years.
46 months ago: "Alt.Religion.Scientology has criticized for years."-What TerryEO said

""Once, it was impossible to speak out against the organization called the Church of Scientology without being exposed to harassment and attack""
"without being exposed to harassment and attack"
"harassment and attack" <-IMPORTANT PART OF SENTENCE

Alt.religion.scientology was the subject of NUMEROUS and REPEATED OSA operations. Individuals posted there with the aim of disrupting discussions, inhibiting discourse, and launching personal attacks and dead agenting on those who could be identified.
Multiple lawsuits were filed attempting to force Usenet servers to shut down their ARS, all of them launched by the Church of Scientology.

Those individuals who's real life identity could be identified were tracked down by private investigators hired by the Church of Scientology and subjected to Fair Game harassment in real life. Houses broken into with nothing stolen, neighbors lied to, flyers attacking their reputation distributed.

I'm sure there are quite a few people on this list who were first hand victims of that. I'm sure many of "the Old Guard" remembers those days quite well. It seems little has changed, many of those same tactics are still in use today against a whole new generation of people who've become pissed off by the crimes committed by the leaders of the Church of Scientology.

46 months ago: Terryeo, you are way off base and in this case I don't think it is from refusal to confront. I think it is from lack of knowledge. I can tell you first hand that Scientology fiercely attacked the local people who protested the cult. This is even more interesting because Canada is a backwater for the cult. There are only 1525 members in the entire country. In one case they staged a mock funeral for a protester on the main street of her home town. In another Scientology phoned the employer of a protester's wife to tell the employer that she was living with a bigot. In another situation two Scientologists followed a protester around in public with sandwich signs calling her a bigot. In another they attempted a break-in at a protesters apartment which was caught on tape. There were two physical assaults. I am just warming up. The stories go on and on. But if you want real horror stories investigate Paulette Cooper or Gabe Cazares.

Only recently have the floodgates broken open. Scientology can't play whack-a-mole anymore. There have been many factors including Anonymous, Bob Minton, the convictions of Mary Sue Hubbard et al., Freezone, the Time Magazine article, defection of key Scientologists, and Anonymous but most of all it is the open communication on the internet through xenu.net, lermanet, ARS, this site and really, a thousand others.

46 months ago: I don't know what all this will do. I think Hubbard's most important research was in following P.T.Barnum tech especially, "A sucker is born every minute." Scientology will continue to deny, deny, deny and make it tough for their accusers every step of the way. France and Belgium may not succeed in closing the cult down and even if they do I doubt if America will follow. And let's face it, most people just don't care, either way. Scientology could live on for hundreds of years. That makes it all the more important for people like me to communicate. I don't want any more people to see Scientology as the solution for their ruin.

I can't accurately predict what the future will bring. I will guess more protests, newspaper articles and internet communication. There may be implosion as the lieutenants decide the Miscavige is the real problem and engineer a coup. Scientology may have gotten caught up in the sub-prime real estate market which could spell disaster. But you may also catch an icon bigger than Cruise like the late Michael Jackson or even Sarah Palin. On the other hand Cruise might turn on you. And you will continue to hunt down the suckers. Even if the organized cult eventually shakes itsef to death, I think it will carry on in various forms in the living rooms of the nation, though causing less harm there than before.

Forgive me, I know i digress.

46 months ago: It strikes me as interesting that even now, Sylvia Browne, a transparent fraud, probably has more followers than you do. She certainly has more shelf space at the bookstores. She hasn't set up any orgs yet. That is how little Scientology matters in society. It matters a lot though to the people who get roped into it.

46 months ago: Terryeo: Just to 2nd Anonymous Voice alt.religion.scientology did indeed criticize for years and for years individual critics as well as alt.religion.scientology was subject to harassment and attack.

How could a news group be attacked you may ask, well there were several attempts to shut it down as well as those repeated disruptive postings including personal attacks on others.

Such tactics are still used today of course. At a public hearing in Riverside County a speaker representing your organisation tried to launch in to a personal attack against one of the speakers opposed to a motion that was perceived as unjustly favoring your organisation. The speaker was quickly shut down BUT this speaker is just an example of one of your organisations' institutionalised responses to critics.

This practice is called dead agenting, essentially muck raking in an attempt to shut down criticism by attacking the critic rather than the criticism. (This is institutionalised abusive behaviour).

46 months ago: As you point out, there are many more people who have left the cult without speaking out about it. I know some of them personally. It is not out of any residual sense of loyalty to the cult, but only our of fear of reprisal that these people do not speak out. Even the most blatantly criminal organizations in the world, such as the Mafia or the Hell's Angels, are not as dangerous to criticise as the Church of Scientology. And that says something very important about this lunatic cult. An honest organization does not suppress criticism; it would either seek to correct its own failings if the criticism was valid, or it would seek to correct a misconception about itself, but it would not treat the critic as fair game and seek to destroy that person. That is an insane response - and this from an organization which has the stated goal of eliminating insanity from the world. The human race is on the whole a rather hypocritical species, but the hypocrisy of the Church of Scientology is truly spectacular, even so.

46 months ago: pitbull98, you're full of rubbish. Why on earth would scientology create some sort 'criticism unit' that is driving it into the ground?

Anyway, it would be redundant. David Miscavige is doing such a good job of driving the cult into a ditch.

The cult was always doomed from the start, however, by nature of being created by a pathological liar and fraud called L Ron Hubbard.

46 months ago: P.S. all you scientology handlers had better think about getting a real job some time, since your little cult won't be around for too long.
46 months ago: On one hand lies reality and we all question and wonder about that. I use http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/scientology.org but of course what critic would want to see Scientology.org's web traffic up 800% in the past 3 months?

On the other hand there is the physical buildings, many have been recently purchased in various countries around the world.

And then there are the public service groups, such as Volunteer Minsters (help at disasters), CCHR.org (Human Rights), Psychcrime.org (psychiatric crimes), and others. None of these efforts seem to be decreasing, even when critics wear hair shirts, pull their hair out in desperation, bemoan cry out into the darkness. None of that drivel seems to help the critic's cause.

On the other hand, critics continually speak in disparaging ways, i.e. "your cult was always doomed fromt he start", you scientology handlers had better (this) and (that)".

It is working, it is causing good effects in the people on this planet, on people's attitude and on people's future. But hey, turn a blind eye to the good and stare into the dark end of a short alleyway, critic. Your choice.
46 months ago: "On the other hand there is the physical buildings, many have been recently purchased in various countries around the world. "

Really, the acquisition of property would be an admirable trait for a real estate company, not a religion. When a Church has to buy new buildings, its usually because your old ones are way too full and there's growth. While that is clearly the image you are TRYING to convey, your old (ie. current) buildings all share a very common trait: they're empty. This isn't conjecture, this is fact observed by critics and other individuals of a neutral nature, and proven with photos of completely empty interiors.

Now, if you had say information about how many NEW MEMBERS you had, that'd be relevant to a religion. After all, its about growing the flock, right? But your little herd is slowly withering away.

"of course what critic would want to see Scientology.org's web traffic up 800% in the past 3 months? "

I want you to get tons of traffic. I want people to go to your website and see the lies straight from the source. I want them to go to Freedom Magazine's website and read the article so every ludicrous word is ingrained in the public's memory and there is not a man, woman, or child who does not recognize Hubbard for the fraud and charlatan he is. If I could, I would sit there with every person in America and make them go to your site and see it all so every one of them can be left wondering why it's all wrapping paper on a plain, empty box. No content, just propaganda. That's what I want them to see, and they are seeing it.

I'm the happiest critic in the world, because the more people we drive to your site, the more people walk away going "They are bat**** crazy." And that's the truth.
46 months ago: "public service groups, such as Volunteer Minsters (help at disasters), CCHR.org (Human Rights), Psychcrime.org (psychiatric crimes), and others. "

I'm confused. Repeatedly, the CCHR has denied that it has any connections to the Church of Scientology, yet here you are saying its a public service group for the organization. So, only when its convenient to claim them as "look how much good we do" they're a public service group? Very suspicious. The same actions are taken with Applied Scholastics and Narconon.

Your efforts are not lagging, but the effects certainly are. The APA recently labeled the CCHR a hate group, and groups with the actual goal of psychiatric reform refuse to associate with you.
Volunteer MInisters have routinely been decried by the Red Cross International as NOT having any connections to them at all, namely following the constant attempts by VMs to stage photographs which give that false appearance.
Volunteer Ministers (http://www.holysmoke.org/vultures/vultures.htm or http://www.cosvm.org/ for more info) have yet to do anything besides provide pamphlets and seminars. They do not bring food, water, tools, shelters, or any other supplies, instead requiring them from ACTUAL aid workers or even locals (placing further demand upon an already thinly stretched logistical situation) and have numerous times been expelled by police and other security forces for doing MORE HARM THAN GOOD.

"critics continually speak in disparaging ways" How do you expect a critic to speak? In positive tones?? Would, "The world is such a great and happy place, and NONE OF IT IS CAUSED BY YOU!" be more appropriate? Because any good that DOES exist in this world (and there is QUITE a lot of it) is here without the help of Scientology, but that has no relevance to WHY I am criticizing you. Go word clear 'critic' and all associated synonyms and derivatives of the root.

46 months ago: Terryeo: The organisations to which you refer: VMs, CCHR, PsychCrimes.org and others are all noise, no positive action and justifiably lack results as well as upset people.

VMs are known among other aid agencies as Vulture Ministers. Even people at disaster zones have complained of the "aid" they provide - back rubs and an attempt to coerce one in to joining your organisation. Yes their activities don't seem to be diminishing but that's simply because they cannot take a hint and stay away from where they're really not wanted. If it wasn't for the fact disaster zones are not the place to get hostile the VMs would be summarily ejected, as it is they still often get booted out especially when they turn up in control centres. All this is sad because most VMs really believe they are doing good by spreading the tech, they don't see it as preying on vulnerable people and recruiting like other aid agencies and many victims do.

CCHR - People who are active as "big pharma" and "psych" watch dogs moan and put their heads in their hands when you bring up CCHR. We're NOT them they cry. Why? Because they are like what Al-Qaeda is to Islam for the main stream watch dog groups. How do I know, well I am member of two main groups and frankly their Psych's caused WW II and were responsible for the holocaust makes us cringe. Another group that makes lots of noise and cannot take a hint; they do more to promote psychiatric excesses because no one can believe the tripe CCHR spew so they don't believe the industry needs keeping an eye on.

PsychCrimes.org is just a branch of the CCHR, providing no benefit either. I gather CCHR has a new database of drug effects yet if one simply googles any a drug one can find out all about it, not just the "official" side, but also from those who have taken it and had bad effects.

46 months ago: Despite the fact CCHR and VMs show no sign of going away soon most who know them find them repulsive so the groups act for the critics in showing the worst, corrupt, side of scientology.

You know I feel another rant coming on with details of the issues around the groups - dispelling some of the myths about their accreditations too. Can I be bothered though? I mean it isn't like most people can't see through the groups anyway.

BTW, by others Terryeo do you mean NarCONon and Criminon - think I have some facts and figures on what they've been up to of late - defaulting on bills, upsetting neighbourhoods, not living up to their own hype.

46 months ago: Reply to Terryeo: In recent years, the Church of Scientology has developed one technique that has been very effective in supporting their various statistics, especially the main statistic of Gross Income, which has been to recruit wealthy celebrities into the cult and to persuade them to make large donantions. If not for that, the cult would have run out of money some time ago. But even though there are still statistics such as those that you quote, showing that the cult is still active, that hardly indicates that they are doing any good. The cult exists to waste people's time and money, and to glorify the memory of the con artist L. Ron Hubbard. That's all it accomplishes. Many other accomplishements are claimed, some quite electrifying, but those claims are lies.

45 months ago: Dear Readers: The cult will always claim that ALL SPs are evil and that they don't want to help others,
But that is just black propaganda made to impress upon the public that only they can heal the body, mind and soul.
In my years exposing the cult after they nearly killed me, I discovered how to heal myself of many illnesses, that had nothing to do with the PTS crap taught to Ronbots.
There are only five causes of illnesses as I wrote in Mother Nature's Secrets of Life and Death.
And all of them are tied into knowing how to use just two laws of God. Scientology claimed one of them as being only invented by LRH. Well a law of nature according to copy-right law, is NOT protected by copy-right, no matter how many they have on the subject of physiological reactions. For everything in Scientology is based upon Physiological Reactions and the law of cause and effect.
Once you know these laws any and all healings of the mind, body and soul are made clear. From then on your ability to know which one to do (five causes of illness) first leads you to recover from the majority of illnesses.
Scientology has defrauded the entire world and has denied a new knowledge given to us by God and not by RON.
