Texas at Nebraska 10/16/2010
When: Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm EST from Memorial Stadium.
Spread: Nebraska - 9.5-point
This is the game of the week if not the game of the year for all Big 12 fans. I'm sure we all remember what happened last year in the Big 12 championship.( See Video on left.) Texas looked like they ran out of time before the officials added 1 second back on the clock so they could kick the winning field goal. Also Texas is not happy that Nebraska is leaving the Big 12, so they will be doing there best to send the Corn Huskers a good bye party.
A lot of fans were upset by that call as well as the Neb coach Bo Pelini who was quoted as saying "Texas was given extra help to get to the BCS championship game" on his way to the locker room after the game. (Pelini this week said the right call was made.)
I think a lot of people forgot one thing about the end of that game. The kicker kicked the ball out of bounds, giving Texas better field position. So in all rights had he kicked the ball through the end zone Texas would have had to start on there own 20, and I don't think 1 sec would have mattered. But who knows in the game of football.
OK, I'm going to put my foot in my mouth here and call the winner of this game. My decision has nothing to do with the fact I lived in Neb. (Boys Town Shout Out!) But is based on the numbers both teams have shown so far.
Defense is like the old business saying, location, location, location. So if you have it you will do well. The Black Shirts ( Neb.) has a lot of that too much in fact. I think Coach Pelini, gives his defensive players MP3's sticks for their I Pod's with the word defense repeated over a million times.
Texas has had problems moving the ball against mediocre defenses as Texas' rushing offense is currently ranked 82nd nationally, this after having played Rice, Wyoming, Texas Tech, UCLA and Oklahoma - teams that rank 59th, 117th, 39th, 92nd, and 79th in defense. Nebraska's national rank in total defense is 22.
So if Texas can't run the ball, look for the Nebraska defense to have at least 4 picks in this game. I see one pic 6 in this game also.
What is really scary, Nebraska's QB Taylor Martinez is lighting fast. I watched a video last week of his big runs against K-State. The guy does not even look like he trying, but he out runs everyone. (See video on the left.) Watch when Roy Helu makes his big run and see how he looks like he is digging hard to just get to the end zone. Then compare it to Martinez, who looks like he is just out for a Saturday jog.
So give the points as Nebraska wins this one by 21 easy.
