We can only make the best of our situation when it comes to Global Warming. We should do what we can to minimize man's impact on our Environment. Starting by eliminating the waste of time and resources spent on twisting the facts to induce results meant to move our governments to past legislation. Here are some quotes from a report published today. Want to bet that we will not see anything in the news?

"Shaviv realised that whenever the Sun and its planets visit the bright spiral arms of the Milky Way Galaxy, they are exposed to stronger cosmic rays, which create 'icehouse' conditions on the Earth."

"This mechanism literally turns the Earth’s thermostat upside down." http://www.p-gis.com/2009/12/cloud-mystery.html

29 months ago: Our interactions with this and other galaxies will indeed change the weather, and eventually we may get sucked into a black hole, but these occurrences have vast timescales in the millions and billions of years.
Humans have been on the earth for only a heartbeat geologically, and we have been industrialized for only a fraction of that heartbeat. Yet in this relatively recent time period, our actions have been able to condemn half the species on earth to extinction, eliminated 90% of the large inexhaustible supply of fish, poisoned the endless seas, nearly drained our fossil aquifers, and exhausted the fertility of the soil just when we need to feed billions more, and yes we have changed the climate of the world. We used to think the world was too big to affect it but everyone but the fools or people with their own greedy agenda admit our rape of mother earth.
No wonder these guys had a hard time getting published in a peer reviewed scientific journal. Cosmic rays do not "Create" aerosols! The energetic particles might effect chemicals already in the atmosphere, and the cosmic ray flux is associated with solar activity (more when less sunspot activity) but there is no observable evidence that cosmic rays effect weather. See this for a more balanced discussion of the phenomenon: http://www.universetoday.com/2008/03/20/could-cosmic-rays-influence-global-warming/

All by ourselves we have done this? I just don't buy it. According to that synopsis, we humans should all be starving, have to share pets and most of us would not get to eat fish for years and we would die of thirst within a few days, not to mention not being able to grow anything.

Half the species on earth. That's a really arbitrary number, get real. Asteroids wiped out more than that in a few seconds. Volcanoes are right up there with them and besides that, which half? Bug half, fish half, four footed half, oh yeah, bugs make up much more than half of the species list anyway. http://www.currentresults.com/Environment-Facts/Plants-Animals/number-species.php Mother Nature does a real good job creating and destroying species every day, man may speed the demise of a few unlucky ones but you can’t claim half just by our hand alone.

29 months ago: 90% of the inexhaustible supply of fish, not very inexhaustible if we eliminated 90% of it, which we haven't. Might be some species we have over fished but proper management is bringing them back. We don’t even eat half the species out there to start with.

The seas are still quite hospitable, to man and fish. There have been some stupid things done, man is trying to correct those that he knows about.

Our aquifers may have been filled millions of years ago and the may be shrinking due to over pumping, but when you consider some of them are pouring out billions of gallons a year from springs that flow to the sea and we just let it flow, there must not be much of a concern about water. Add to the fact that water doesn't just disappear into nothingness, I think we just need to learn how to get it fresh again, seems there are several oceans full of it out there for the use of anyone with half a brain and a little sunshine.

Our soil is not depleted. Some places have depleted a few acres of it due to overuse, but with proper care it will be productive again. There are places with “Black Earth” that aren’t even being used any more because the people there have forgotten where they are because they didn’t need the extra growing capacity.

Spouting fear words and ideas does not improve your chances of getting your point across.

Yes we need to conserve, just not for the reasons you listed.

29 months ago: Jon, not sure I can buy the cosmic ray thing. I don’t fully understand Earth’s atmosphere and how the Sun and stars and other cosmic effects influence it. I’ll just have to research it more.

This I can believe: The IPCC has rejected Henrik Svensmark's findings, claiming that there is poor correlation between solar activity and global surface temperature measurements in recent decades. Especially the “recent decades” being their measuring stick by which to reject the research. Someday they will open their eyes and see that the Earth has been hot and cold for millions of years and this latest temperature swing is part of the package.
29 months ago: Sixer, they don't have "hot" or "cold" springs up there.
29 months ago: My thanks to all for your comments, I agree about not buying into the cosmic thing. But it does make sense, and if you read the whole study you just might find it unbiased in their methodology. It is clear to me that the research goes against the "Powers that Be" and therefore it will take a beating from the spin doctors. I am concerned about the people that keep on playing the fear card. It is as wrong as playing the race card. As a Nation we need to be more positive about where we are going and not what might be. From my point of view we have much to be positive about our future. I have tried to be a guiding light to all and to provide a picture of a very bright future as I see it. There are many, many organizations in our world that want to do their part to make our future bright and prosperous. There are also those that manipulate us to there benefit by resorting to deception and fear to accomplish there selfish goals. We all have to be aware of the barbarian at the gate, and not let them in.

I am hopeful that we are entering a period of prosperity in spite of all of the fear mongering going on. I believe that we will be able to put the fear of an "Energy Crisis" to rest and that energy from all sources will be plentiful and afordably priced. It is clear to me that it should be. Our country has prospered when energy was low in cost. Cheap energy = more jobs = growing economy = a better life for all. We are at that point with all of the new technology and more technology on the horizon.

In closing, keep your fears to your self. They serve no constructive purpose. As far as worry, I have this quote ( I do not remember the source): "Worry only steals today's strength". Look for the truth, look for the positive things that life brings.
29 months ago: Sixer, let's meet in "Liberty" and have a few brews while waiting on a rainbow to catch and hug.
29 months ago: We have both, hot and cold, still looking for the beer one, gonna live by that one for-EVER!

Coors light please. Cigar while we wait?

Just another couple of quotes on the fear thing

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." (Bene Gesserit chant, Dune)

Luke 26
25"And there shall be signs in the sun and in the moon and in the stars; and upon the earth distress among nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring.
26Men's hearts (Translated as minds) will fail them for fear and for looking upon those things which are coming on the earth; for the powers of heaven shall be shaken."

15,000 years ago the Sahara Desert was a lush green paradise. 5000 years from now it will be again.

29 months ago: Make that Luke 21, 25-26.
29 months ago: Thank You very much OTB for the source of the quote, Great movie & book, Dune. The plot being similar to what is now going on with the powers that be in our world today, don't you think?

We just might live to see the Sahara and all deserts begin the to return to being lush and green. With Swapsol processes unlocking the hydrogen (and therefor H2O), that is stored in fossil fuels, and then being used used to fuel power generators. The exhaust being water/water vapor there will be cheap new sources of fresh water. That water and the carbon byproducts of Swap processes could then be used to reclaim depleted crop land and deserts. See www.Biochar.com
