In what has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride on the legal situation concerning
marijuana in my home state of California, another wrinkle has made itself known recently. There seems that plans are being made by some state official to make marijuana legal in the Golden State.
Debra Bowen, who is the California Secretary of State has announced that those who wish to decriminalize marijuana can begin the signature petition collection to try and get an initiative on the upcoming 2012 November ballot. The take from this is that those who are trying to get marijuana legal will be will be using the argument that by doing so the jobs of law enforcement will be easier.
Illegal marijuana has been the root of some very vicious drug wars that has kept law enforcement very busy the past few years. Legalizing marijuana will help stop that as pot will no longer be profitable for gangs to use to finance their wars. The initiative if passed would make marijuana use in the state of California taxable as well as regulated. That would mean that marijuana in California would be legal to sell, distribute, possess, transport, and cultivate.
To get the initiative on the November ballot in California, advocates will need 505,000 registered voter signatures by March 26, 2012. No word yet on how this initiative will be challenged when Federal law has been closing pot shops up and down the state of California.
