So Last weekend I went to see Star Trek with my brother. I have never cared for the series and I certainly didn't intend on enjoying myself at the movie. However, five minutes into the movie, I was totally enthralled in it. The great thing about it was that I never had watched the Star Trek series but I still got it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Has any one watched it? What did you think?

36 months ago: I saw it last night with my sister. How ironic. Anyway, we are Star Trek purists, so we liked the effects, but the story line changed so as not to follow the "history" of the series.

So I hated it. My sister almost beat up the ticket guy.

36 months ago: Some people dislike this movie (as amishking does) for being unfaithful to the previously conceived version of Star Trek, and some (such as myself) love it because it actually IS so remarkably faithful to the Star Trek universe as we know it - despite the fact that the movie also (apparently) winds up severely altering that universe. Of course, the usual (or indeed, invariable) result of time travel in its previous appearance in Star Trek is that even when the universe seems to change, it is only going to change back to its original form later on, by means of further interventions by time travelers. There will be more movies, and perhaps they will address the problem of the destruction of the planet Vulcan, just as Spock himself was both killed and brought back to life, in movies #2 and #3. What's good for Spock is good for his home planet, one might imagine. But that remains to be seen.

I think that familiarity with the original series will greatly enhance the viewer's appreciation. The greatest accomplishment of the movie is its successful re-creation of the 1960's cast, in a slightly younger version, in their Academy days. Everyone is amazingly true to the characters that we came to know and love. Beautifully done.
