If like so many other analytical and critically-thinking Americans, you've been scratching your head a lot lately trying to figure out what's going on in the world, read this editorial by conservative writer and activist Juan Williams "What Happened to the Once Grand Old Party?". In short order, Mr. Williams explains how the GOP has worked to retake power using what they believe to be two wildly popular social agendas: (a) reducing deficit spending – a.k.a. the supposed founding principle of the Tea Party) and (b) eliminating social progress such as abortion rights, marital rights, DODA abolition, etc. – a.k.a. the current mainstream principles of the far right wing of the Republican party. Yet, neither of these is the goal of those sent to Washington in the last general election. In fact, they couldn't really care less about any of that. Their true unabashed goal is to make the richest 10% of the nation as rich as possible. How are they accomplishing this? Step 1: Keep the Bush tax cuts for the rich firmly in place. This has cost the nation over $1 trillion. YOU OUT THERE WHO WANT DEFICIT REDUCTION NEED TO RECONCILE THIS FACT!!!!! Step 2: Begin to chisel away at the programs set up to keep the poor and middle class viable. Get rid of their unions, health care, educational programs, and more all under the guise of eliminating entitlements. YOU OUT THERE WHO WANT DEFICIT REDUCTION NEED TO RECONCILE THESE FACTS!!!! They have been so clever and deft in their implementation and efforts in this that no one is paying any attention. People are so focused on Gay Marriage and Libya as to be concerned about much else like the possible end of medicare. Did you pay into medicare all these years? Well, how'd you like to kiss the money you paid goodbye? How about Social Security? Goodbye!

Please just go read Mr. Williams's article if you read nothing else today.

But really, what's the big problem? Congress and the Presidency changes direction more often than the wind. Give it another couple years, and a new bunch will be in charge. And getting nothing meaningful done then too, I might add.

During that time, it will be necessary to run consecutive and significant surpluses to pay down the debt. We aren't going to be able to do that without increasing taxes on the rich, because they have the money to pay, and still protecting the middle and lower class, since they make up a significant portion of the population and ultimately drive the economy.

Unfortunately, with the political system that exists in most western democracies, there is simply no way that the government will be able to stay the course for 50-60 years to get the job done.

A politician will come along sooner rather than later that will tell everyone that we don't need to endure the pain for the long term gain, and being typical human beings who would prefer to vote for what sounds good rather than the truth, we will elect politicians who will change course.

The unfortunate reality is that the most likely solution is a massive implosion and the end of the American superpower. It happened to Great Britain, Germany, Rome, Greece, Egypt, and a multitude of other superpowers throughout history.

I know this may be a surprise since most liberals love to bash Fox as being completely to the right. Juan also worked for the NPR at one time. You may be interested in the fact that the NPR just could not stand that one of it's employees worked also for Fox news and became very aggressive, trumped up charges against him and fired him. Of course all this just follows suit of how the left so often attacks anyone who may even remotely disagree with their ideology rather than discuss and debate the issues. For those interested you may want to read Juan's story of being figurativly crucified by the NPR.
