According to the Washington Times, Evangelical Pastor, Rick warren stated to Larry King on CNN, "never once even gave an endorsement" to the the California proposition 8 which supports that marriage may only occur between one man and one woman. (1) Anyone who followed Warren at the time would say, he has sort of flip-flopped on the issue. In the "Larry King Live" interview, Rick Warren stated, "I am not anti-gay. I am not anti-gay marriage." (2) So did, recently, Craig Silverman of Denver's KHOW Talk Radio show, "Capliss and Silverman" flip flop finally announcing himself as a newly converted supporter of gay marriage after decades of doubt.

As more and more of our political and social leaders realize the preposterous nature of preventing gay people from obtaining the same rights and privileges afforded by our society one can see a wave of change upon us, and rightly so. Gay marriage does nothing to erode the sanctity of straight marriage. Nor does it actually have any effect on straight couples. It does, however, end a practice of wrongful discrimination that's been afoot in our nation for centuries.

37 months ago: Listen to Rick Warren on the video again, ColoRanter. Warren states he is not an "anti-gay, anti-gay marriage ACTIVIST", which is very different than being anti-gay. I haven't seen Warren flip-flop on this issue. Don't put words in Warren's mouth. Why erode the meaning of a word? Why do we need to redefine the word marriage, which means a union between one man and one woman? Why can't gays find a new word, their very own word, for their unions?
I suggest "gayrraige". Leave "marriage", which has been cherished for centuries, ALONE.
37 months ago: my opinion is very simple. marriage shall remain only for man and woman.
civil unions shall be for gays. Two different words for two different groups.
Both shall have the same rights as the other.
In the beginning the arguement was that the gays wanted the right to make decisions for their partners. This is now accomplished by the two groups.
Gays have made the "choice" to engage in their love style, so now that in itself makes things different. ERGO: two different groups, two different words..."civil-unions" and marriage, and all lived happily forever more......

37 months ago: Truly, the only fair solution is to eliminate marriage from the laws entirely. It is after all, a religious institution, so Congress (and by virtue of the 14th amendment, the States) should not be involving religion in civil matters.

From here on out, only civil unions for people. If you want your union to be blessed within the sanctity of your church as a marriage as well, thats your religious freedom. But a state of "marriage" must remain unrecognized by the government and confer no additional benefits.

This way everyone wins.

37 months ago: I am not in disagreement with Anonymous Voice. I would be thrilled to see marriage taken off the books and replaced with civil unions for all legally eligible couples. That's fine with me. I have no qualms with that.

But I do have a qualm with this puritanical notion of marriage being imposed by, sorry, but ignorance. People in this country need to read some human history and find out that on this planet today, the actual number of people who willingly enter into this 'beautiful marriage' is pretty small. Most marriages to this day on the surface of the planet are arranged and more of an economic decision than one of love. Moreover, this hundred of years of blessed blah blah bla we associate with marriage is fantasy. It wasn't even until 1536 that marriage was conducted by a Priest with witnesses. It's nice to glorify what you think is marriage today based on what you've seen in the movies, but come on. It hasn't always been this way and it won't always be this way.

God Bless Rick Warren for having the courage to admit that his previous positions were untenable under the eyes of God.

37 months ago: I'm providing this to you in an effort to clarify statements made by Pastor Rick Warren during his April 6th appearance on CNN "Larry King Live." Several comments he made during that interview have caused confusion which I would like to clarify on his behalf as media representative for Saddleback Church.

Throughout his pastoral ministry spanning nearly 30 years, Dr. Warren has remained committed to the biblical definition of marriage as between one man and one woman, for life -- a position held by most fellow Evangelical pastors. He has further stressed that for 5,000 years, EVERY culture and EVERY religion has maintained this worldview.

When Dr. Warren told Larry King that he never campaigned for California's Proposition 8, he was referring to not participating in the official two-year organized advocacy effort specific to the ballot initiative in that state, based on his focus and leadership on other compassion issues. Because he's a pastor, not an activist, in response to inquiries from church members, he issued an email and video message to his congregation days before the election confirming where he and Saddleback Church stood on this issue.

During the King interview, Dr. Warren also referenced a letter of apology that he sent to gay leaders whom he knew personally. However, that mea culpa was not with respect to his statements or position on Proposition 8 nor the biblical worldview on marriage. Rather, he apologized for his comments in an earlier Beliefnet interview expressing his concern about expanding or redefining the definition of marriage beyond a husband-wife relationship, during which he unintentionally and regrettably gave the impression that consensual adult same sex relationships were equivalent to incest or pedophilia.

37 months ago: Jim, thank you for the clarification.

I would like to note that it is factually incorrect that, "for 5,000 years, EVERY culture and EVERY religion has maintained this worldview," in reference to a one man/one woman marriage. This so-called biblical definition of marriage constantly thrown about and referred to by USA-based Christians didn't come about until fewer than 400 years ago. The vast majority of the people on the planet to this day face arranged marriage. Meanwhile, Newsweek Magazine did an excellent job of debunking the supposed Biblical evidence against Gay people and Gay Marriage touting that the Bible, of the time devoted to anything to do with marriage, spends the bulk of it lambasting divorce. This, of course, begs the question why Evangelicals don't spend the vast majority of their time working to end divorce rather than worrying about whether the couple is same or differently gendered.

37 months ago: Meanwhile, there will come a day, I hope in my lifetime, when religious leaders like the honorable Dr. Warren will explain and enlighten the rest of us as to the exact moment that God spoke to them and instructed them to be the judge and jury for the rest of us. In my religious education on the One God I have only ever had it drilled into me that God absolutely never intended for human kind to judge each other and, in fact, reserved that right exclusively for Himself. Pastor Warren and his colleagues have a lot of explaining to do on this front for they do way too little time on the area of judgment; and, for some reason, they seem to inspire the judgmental to judgment rather than leaving that to God. Could there be a bigger sin than to usurp the power of God and/or to presume any mere human being could know what God wants? In that, I'm sorry to say, I would argue that those who judge on this or any other topic are far more at risk of upsetting the Lord Almighty than two young gay women in love tying the knot and committing to each other in the eyes of God, but that's just a guess.
