Are Average Americans Prosperous Again?
Written by
The recession is officially over, and has been for two years! Can you believe it? I can't. Why wasn't I informed that the recession ended two years ago, more importantly, why didn't all of America begin to feel the effects of this miraculous and much anticipated news during this time. Most of the citizens of America have been struggling, while many have lost much of their savings, income, homes and possessions during this new prosperous era in this post-recession American history. And many more US citizens continue to join the ranks of the suffering with each passing day. But surely, the lives of these Americans are complete lies because the numbers being generated by the government propaganda are the most truthful that, not only the US, but the world as well, has ever known, or, will ever know.

Let's review the auspicious numbers being generated by our upstanding, forthright and trustworthy governmental officials who provide the propaganda that is given to the media outlets of America. Please note that I try not to use the word "news" when speaking of the American media because the falsities and fluff they attempt to pass along as legitimate news on a daily basis is a dismal smoke screen and circus act at best... I digress. Now, looking at the numbers provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics provided for April and the twenty-three months preceding, we can celebrate the death of the recession. Over the course of these last couple of years America has steadily added between 100 to 200 thousand jobs per month, once and for all proving that the economy is again vital and healthy. But wait, that's not all! Let's review the other set of numbers provided by the Labor Department just yesterday, May 5, 2011 - they reported a 23% spike in new unemployment claims (474,000 newly unemployed). This spike in unemployment represents an eight month high. When reviewing the unemployment numbers for the last 24 months, it is uncovered that between 420 to 650 thousand Americans filed for unemployment each and every month during that time frame.

Now, lets combine both these sets of numbers provided by the government to finally and definitively prove that happy times are here again, and prosperity reigns supreme from sea to shining sea in this great nation of the United States of America. I'll "generously" only cite the high numbers of newly employed by averaging that 200,000 new jobs have been generated every month for the last 24 months. This total represents 4.8 million new jobs which rebounded the country from the deepest economic turmoil since the Great Depression. 4.8 million jobs gained - I am impressed and completely beside myself, wow! Now, the unemployment numbers for this same time-frame. I will modestly cite the unemployment numbers in the average of 450,000 jobs lost every month for the last 24 month cycle. 24 months multiplied by 450,000 jobs lost per month equals 10.8 million jobs lost during the last 2 years - please note that this unemployment figure is most like double or more.

While I don't profess to be a statistician, nor is mathematics my primary field of expertise, I would surmise that I have reasonable intelligence to understand that the US is, and has been, losing jobs faster than jobs are being created. 4.8 million new jobs minus 10.8 million lost jobs will never add up positively - math is a very exacting science. Please note and remember that I've more than generously used and reported on the numbers provided by our illustrious and above reproach governmental agencies. After combining these two numbers provided by the US government it is apparent to the simplest of minds that America is suffering a net loss of 6 million jobs, but this number is, in actuality, much higher without even including the under employed.

Now, let's look at this "new and improved" job market. Jobs that used to pay $60K or more per year are now advertising between $8 and $12 an hour. Employers are no longer concerned with offering the true value of compensation for work performed because they know people are desperate for any amount of money. Now potential employers prey on down-trodden Americans, treating these citizens as if they should be grateful for table scraps while the wealthy continue living the more than extravagant lifestyle. Let us also note that most of the 4.8 million new jobs created over the last 24 months on average pay only slightly more than minimum wage. The average American family is now reduced to trying to survive with 50-95% less resources than the onslaught of this greed driven, generated recession caused by the upper class, corporations and the inept government in these United States of America.

The sad thing is, no matter all the "real" truths that are reported, no one in government will choose to believe the devastatingly harsh reality with which the unemployed, as well as the majority of Americans now live. All congressional millionaires would rather Americans ignore the reality of the recession, while expecting America to believe Government's false propaganda. Elected officials and the elitist of class of America feel the unemployed are just lazy complainers whose fault it is they aren't doing well in this booming post-recession economy. I have never experienced such a more contemptuous group of elected officials and elitists willing to go out of their way to ignore, blame and/or punish the victims of their inept, misguided and unjustifiable greed. Americans put these elected officials in place to look out for America's interests, instead, these government agents choose to concert all efforts to ensure continued growth and success of the upper class while not only ignoring the average unemployed American, but the dwindling middle class of America as well. Congress, President Obama and his administration ensure by their inactions and ineptness, that Americans cannot rely on them to do what is blatantly obvious to sustain America, or her families now, or in the future.

Since the beginning of this recession, it is now arguable that 1% of the people control 95% of the wealth, and, the remaining 99% of the population get to live on the remaining 5% of the resourses, i.e., the table scraps of the rich. Back in the day when I was able to eat out, I tipped my servers a minimum of 15-20%, much more than the 5% that the government and the elitists deem necessary to allocate for the rest of Ameria to live on. They, feel they do too much for America already, graciously conceding 5% of their wealth for average Americans to live on.

On the other hand the bankers, Wall Street tycoons, Hedge fund managers, and derivative traders, are making a lot more money now than before they destroyed the economy.

There are two Americas. The affluent America where 10% controls 93% of the wealth (top 1% only has 42%) are partying hard and rolling in dough, and the rest of us who are barely scraping by.

So Got any solutions? The Republican solution is to shower the billionaires with another trillion dollars in gifts, while those new tax breaks are paid for by stealing food from the mouths of starving babies and throwing the old and infirm into the street.

The sad truth is that most of the jobs lost may not be coming back. Globalization meant that many companies moved manufacturing jobs overseas where they can exploit starving workers at one tenth the wages . They have been encouraged to do this with tax cuts , Republicans killed a bill that would have eliminated these tax breaks.

During the tough times factories have become more efficient by buying robots and automated equipment so each worker can do a lot more. They won't be getting rid of those robots.

In the past we made up for the loss in manufacturing jobs with innovation and silicon Valley did very well while Detroit went down the tubes.

If we as a nation were smart we would make massive investments in solar technologies so we can provide green jobs, and make massive investments in education to spur innovation. We would invest in high speed rail and replace all of our dangerous 40 year old nuclear plants with renewable energy. The Republican plan would reduce investments in renewable energy by 70%.

The only way we can compete with all of the other developed nations like China, Germany and many others, is to have government help to spur on green jobs as they do.

How can we do that if the affluent and the corporations don't pay their share, and the right wing only wants to move backwards?

I've read a couple of your remarks and must say that your thoughts are very engaging, cutting-edge and provocative. I'm going to set aside time this weekend to read through the thoughts you've posted. I'm sure we share commonalities in what should occur to turn, not only this country around, but the rest of the world as well.

Most of the middle class paid more in payroll taxes than they did in Income taxes. Plus if they own a house property taxes, state taxes, and hundreds of other local taxes and fees.

A new study conducted by Quinnipiac University found that 60 percent of Americans favor raising taxes on households making more than $250,000. (other polls say up to 81% favor surtaxes on the rich)
http://wealthforcommongood.org/wp-conten......

The study showed that the top 400 earners in America saw their tax outlays as a percentage of their income drop from 51.2 percent in 1955 to 16.6 percent in 2007. Meanwhile, the tax outlays for median earners over that same span nearly doubled, increasing from 7.4 percent in 1955, to 13.6 percent in 2007.

The Republicans say that all taxes are bad and most have pledged never to raise taxes for any reason, however there are good taxes and bad taxes, and taxes on the rich help the country while taxes on the poor hurt the economy.

The good taxes are those that discourage harmful behavior like taxes on tobacco and alcohol. Revenue gained from these sources can help offset the additional health costs that using these drugs create.

Likewise carbon taxes would be a good thing because they would decrease our use of polluting fossil fuels and reduce climate change. Part of the revenue could be given to people to offset additional fuel costs, part could be used to reduce the deficit and part could be used to invest in alternative sources of energy.

A very small transaction tax of .05% to .2 % targeted to the risky hedge fund and derivative trading would discourage this harmful activity, generate tens of billions and not be felt by the common people.

When the middle classes are given tax breaks they use that money to pay bills and buy stuff they need. When the rich receive tax breaks the intent is that they should create jobs, but the last ten years have shown us that they do not. They shelter their money offshore, they buy luxuries in other countries and they take that money out of circulation. Therefore taxes on the rich are helpful because that revenue can be used to invest in things that provide more jobs and boost the economy.

12 months ago: It's sad that when the average American gets a refund they use it to pay on bills. Who are they paying these bills to? They are paying the majority of their refunds to the banking, insurance and corporate interests that enslave them, thereby continuing the cycle of lining the pockets of the wealthiest few.

When the wealthy get tax breaks or refunds they generally spend it on lavish purchases or extravagant vacations for themselves which only benefits the uppermost businesses and individuals with a vice grip on the reins of the US economic structure. In the most minimal of instances to they think to invest in creating family sustaining jobs for the average American, proving yet again that greed begets greed.
12 months ago: I'm uncertain how the average American is only paying 13.6% of their income in taxes. All of my friends, including me, married and single, have paid between 30 to 40% in all taxes on earned income every year since the mid 1990's. I wouldn't be sniveling about the injustices if I only paid 13.6% of my income in taxes every year... i'm getting robbed!
