Ovation: Toys R Us & Archie Comics - vs- One Million Mom

One Million Moms (there's probably not really a million of them) is an organization that confuses me very much. The organization was created as a project of the American Family Association to, supposedly, give mothers an opportunity to "stand against the immorality, violence, vulgarity and profanity the entertainment media is throwing at your children." In the past they've focused their disgust on various media outlets, television program, etc. Most recently, they began a boycott of JC Penney department stores because they hired Ellen DeGeneres as their spokesperson.

This time, they're upset because Toys 'R Us is selling an Archie comic book featuring a "Just Married" gay couple on the cover (pictured). These moms don't want to have conversations with their children about sexual orientation when they're too young to understand. They are super angry that these comic books are sold near the checkout registers and are visible to customers with children. They are outraged that children are being exposed to same-sex marriage in a toy store.

They claim that toy stores are not the right place for them to be confronted with questions from their children about topics that they feel they're too young to understand. They think that Toys 'R Us is being irresponsible.

I say "Good for Toys 'R Us and Archie Comics" for taking a stand.

"We stand by Life with Archie #16. As I've said before, Riverdale is a safe, welcoming place that does not judge anyone. It's an idealized version of America that will hopefully become reality someday. We're sorry the American Family Association/One Million Moms feels so negatively about our product, but they have every right to their opinion, just like we have the right to stand by ours. Kevin Keller will forever be a part of Riverdale, and he will live a happy, long life free of prejudice, hate and narrow-minded people." - Jon Goldwater, CEO of Archie Comics.

The problem isn't Toys 'R Us or even the children … it's the moms. It's the moms that are afraid to have conversations with their children that should be very simple and matter of fact. A good parent should have many difficult conversations with their child before he or she is grown.

"Well, honey … sometimes a woman marries a man. Sometimes a woman marries another woman and sometime two men get married. It really doesn't matter as long as they love each other." Kids understand this. Why don't their moms?

Being a parent is not easy. Moms that concentrate their energies on shielding their children from the realities of the modern world do them a great disservice. I understand that instinct sometimes tells us to preserve their innocence for as long as we can but, eventually, the children of these million moms will have to live and function in our society … our actual, factual society. The one in which same-sex couples get married.

If One Million Moms doesn't like the way Toys 'R Us does business they should shop elsewhere. That's how it should be. When will they learn that their boycotts and their crying don't work? I think it's safe to say that Toys 'R Us is thrilled by the free publicity that the moms are generating and that those comic books will quickly sell out. I bought one.

14 months ago: The rag news papers, throw away romance and soap mags, the over the top "Men's" magazine covers, etc. have been around for years.

Often times, my family and I get a kick out of seeing and discussing some of the garbage that is peddled to the public as things that are supposed to be acceptable, bought into, or idolized. Other times it's downright sad.

Moms and Dads need to spend time discussing the important issues of life with their children rather than attempting to shield them from it. Pretending certain negative attitudes and deviant behaviors do not exist is counterproductive to rearing healthy and well-adjusted young people. Secure young people who will have strong identity and not end up confused with regard to who they are and why they are here.

I understand the concerns of these moms. What is abnormal or perverted should never be seen as normal. Tolerance and understanding goes a long way as far as co-existence. However, tolerance should never be confused with agreement or endorsement.
14 months ago: Comic Books are on the "Collector Aisle" in all the Toys R Us stores I go to NOT in the Check Out Lanes. I'm a toy collector so I know these things.

These Moms are just another group of people with nothing better to do. Gay people are not abnormal or perverted anymore than straight people are. The homophobes out there have this fear of gay people for some reason.

Can't we all just get along?
14 months ago: "These Moms are just another group of people with nothing better to do."

Your mostly right however I thought it would be fun to point out that these right wing organizations simply spin off these smaller groups to inflate their numbers. It's not "Just another group" It is the exact same group hoping that the new name will have some impact on the situation.
14 months ago: "Gay people are not abnormal or perverted anymore than straight people are."

Correct. That still doesn't change the fact.

To the point however, it is just plain wrong when any group wants the masses to accept their pet deviation as normal.

I can't speak for others, by as far as where I am coming from, it has absolutely nothing to do with fear. Fear of what anyway? There are plenty of folks with plenty of issues out there. Lack of endorsement of any particular issue doesn't automatically equivocate to fear. Drumming it up to that in all cases is just plain ignorant.

And yes, we should all be able to just get along. However that does not mean we have to unilaterally see as acceptable every behavior people choose to engage in. That's what tolerance is, right?

If a guy wants to marry his sister for instance, and they feel it is normal and it is legal, they can go ahead and do that. Just don't expect me or everyone else to have a mandate to do back flips and applaud it.
14 months ago: OK, then maybe you can help me figure something out. Why do homophobes hate gay people so much? If you believe that God created Heaven and Earth and everything on it, then He created homosexuality too, right? So what's the problem?

Nobody else's marriage concerns me, it does not matter if they are gay or straight. I just don't care about their marriage as it is none of my business. So why do these Million Moms care? How does a gay marriage in a comic book mean anything in the real world?

By the way, Batwoman is a lesbian, or at the very least bisexual. She was introduced in DC Comic Books a couple years ago. How do you think those Moms would react if they knew that?

Maybe think they like Iron Man better? Do they know that Tony Stark is a recovering alcoholic? Is a drunk OK, since at least he's not gay?

This week we have the Blunt Bill headed to Congress and it attacks women's rights, how about those Million Moms speak up about something that is REAL and will affect THEM and NOT A COMIC BOOK!
14 months ago: Cully,

You are cool with me and I have no axe to grind.

I don't know the absolute motivation for that mom's group but I can understand their concern for homosexuals potentially proselytizing their kids. Some of their fears may be unfounded but others could be quite legitimate.

http://www.rantrave.com/Rant/Gay-Columni...

It is up to them to determine what they feel needs to be done to protect their kids. That's every parent's responsibility.

"If you believe that God created Heaven and Earth and everything on it, then He created homosexuality too, right? So what's the problem?"

Sin is the problem and we are all guilty of it. The messed up part is that some folks simply expect everyone to endorse and legitimize theirs and that my friend is just plain wrong.

I grew up on Marvel and DC comics from 8 - 21 years of age. Read a lot of good ones and also ran across some really crappy ones. Comics have evolved and changed over the years. A lot more expensive and in my opinion many of them are straight up garbage.

Tony Stark has his issues (you forgot to mention that the character was at one time a womanizer) and Batwoman has hers.

However, no one should expect a thinking individual to accept an unequivocal mandate to endorse someone's aberrant behavior. Period.

Like I said earlier, if folks want to participate in incest for example, that's their business. Just don't expect everyone to fall in line and accept that lifestyle as being normal.

The goal was to get a million mothers out on the streets for a rally on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14, 2000, designed to promote tighter restrictions to keep guns out of the hands of kids and criminals. They even had Rosie O Donell as a major supporter.

Then they went over to the dark side with their homophobia, and became way too conservative. I wonder if they promote guns for students now. How did they get taken over by extremists?

We were all told that the world would end and traditional marriage would be harmed if gay folk were allowed to pledge their love for each other.

There are now 7 states and the District of Columbia which allows gay marriage and thousands of folk have gotten married. Yet the sky didn't fall, the sun still comes up in the morning and hetrosexuals are still free to marry get divorced and marry again.

I salute DC comics Ellen, and Penny's for showing that LGBT folk are not some weird two headed monsters. It is not aberrant behavior. Kinsey estimated that 45% of males tried sex with other males or were attracted to other males. It is normal and I think the homophobes protest too much because they lean that way too. They are people just like you or I and they should be allowed to have the same rights.

14 months ago: Homophobia is wacked. What's there to be scared of anyway?

If they want to hook up, let them. It may be a union, but it is still not normal or a marriage regardless of how much they beg to differ.

In fact, it is no more normal than brothers marrying sisters or mother's sexing their sons.

Just because they feel the urge to do it, that does not mean everyone has no choice but to accept it, or see it as a normal lifestyle. That is just a stupid position for any rational person to assume or to attempt to mandate to anyone else.

14 months ago: A million moms. Probably very predjudice to begin with. They don't like this, they don't like that. Do they like themselves? Do they even understand what they are standing up for, or are against? They should air their own dirty linen first.
Most don't really know anyone with different lives outside of their own little worlds. I heard that too about Ellen recently being under attack for being in the JC Penny commercial because she is gay. I saw it last night, and it was really funny, and she has great talent. Who notices gay?
I like comics, but they should be entertaining. I don't like anything that tries to force a point through reading materials that will make an impression on children's minds. It is confusing, and it is conditioning them to think a certain way. To me it is taking advantage.

14 months ago: Kids that go to Toys R Us are usually very young and with parents. The only thing they will see is the cover on the comic, which is a deliberate campaign to sell and send a message out. These kids can't even read or understand. They think comics are for fun. I don't know what they would gain by putting them by a check out.
Also, these so called mom's fighting against violence and vulgarity in the media, haven't put a dent in it. This junk is still on the air and getting worse.
14 months ago: Contrary to the opinion of some, there is such a thing as objective truth. This is the problem when we have a society that is moving toward moral relativism. Everyone does what is right in their own eyes regardless of what is actually right.

It is not at all farfetched to believe that incest could become seen as acceptable and normal lifestyle at some point and time in this society.

Just suppose there was a push to allow siblings to marry or form civil unions. Also suppose that this particular sexual lifestyle was now paraded in CHILDREN'S COMIC BOOKS as normal behavior. Now what?

Does that now mean everyone must endorse and see this behavior as normal? Must all people everywhere now accept and applaud that? More importantly, does that make folks who disagree or find that lifestyle twisted or perverse incestaphobes?

I don't think so.

There is no room at all for fear and hate here. There is enough of that to go around on plenty of other issues, not just this one.

We all have to understand that to live harmoniously together there has to be mutual love and respect for each other regardless of some of our choices. A society that cannot co-exist despite some differences ends up destroying itself.

However, anyone who feels that society MUST endorse and blanketly accept a specific lifestyle or pet perversion regardless of what it entails, needs to have their head examined.

Thankfully, not everyone is that gullible or stupid.

14 months ago: What I don't understand is why the right is opposed to stability and commitment in relationships? In most cases LGBT folk do not have a choice. It is perfectly natural that there is a broad spectrum of human sexuality and it is just plain ignorant of people to think that the world is black and white, good or bad. Take a biology course sometime and you will find that in addition to the common xx chromosome for females and xy for males, humans can have a yy yyy xxy xxx or yyx chromosome. In almost all of the cases the people don't know they have other combos, but what does that do to their sexual preferences or behaviors?

The point is that, any relationship where the people commit to each other, promise to support and be with each other, and not to screw around with others and be promiscuous, that is good for society.

Any family unit is better for the kids if there is a stable relationship with two committed adults.

That is all marriage is - a public commitment to have a stable long term relationship with the one you love. Those committed adults do have the same rights as all others according to the constitution, which is why the DOMA is indefensible.

Why do conservatives think that it is necessary to deny the basic and constitutional human rights of others? Are they happier because they have the power to make others unhappy? The Constitution and the courts say they don't have that right.

The DC comics, Ellen, Pennies et al, are merely reflecting the real world. To do otherwise would be to enable the cruel harassment, bullying, and belittling of others, that is forbidden in the constitution. They are being patriotic!

14 months ago: Trying to equate gay relationships to incestuous relationships is absurd, but the current taboo was not always so. There is a lot of intermarrying in the aristocracy of Europe because the snobs didn't think it appropriate to marry outside of their social circle so there was a lot of inbreeding which weakened the bloodlines.

It could be argued that the rich and powerful might have created the chromosomal abnormalities that cause homosexuality in the first place. Homosexuality was rampant among royalty.

This could also be considered a good excuse to allow gay marriages. If the gay people are forced by social mores into hetrosexual marriages it would result in passing on those abnormal chromosomes and thus perpetuate homosexuality, whereas if they were allowed to follow their natural god given inclinations, those genetic abnormalities would not be passed on.
14 months ago: Reading a Batman comic book does not make me Batman anymore than standing in a garage makes me a car. Reading an Archie comic book does not make me gay either.

If you think Conservatives have odd arguments, try talking to a Homophobe. Being gay does not mean incest, they are not even remotely related.

People are born gay, they have or should have the same rights as everybody else, including marriage and healthcare.

I will never understand the obsession against people that aren't like them. There are some good points made here.
I know that when a baby is born, it is said that they are born with certain traits. It is a biological condition that determines this factor. Anyone who would pick up a medical book would understand that.
Most people don't yell and shout their lifestyle saying that others have to be like them, but they want to be accepted like everyone else. (Although, lately I don't see much love and compassion floating around for anyone.) They stand up for themselves. Ellen, for example, is a very warm individual that cares about others. Her talent is God given, and this world is not ready to give up on people like her that bring laughter and humor and goes out willingly doing good for others. Everyone has a right to their lives. The only ones that don't make sense are the followers with nothing more to do then condemn others. Usually, they don't know the first thing about what they are against.
A comic book wouldn't turn me gay, nor anyone who would try to persuade me would be barking up the wrong tree. Children are influenced by sight just like they are with pictures on packs of cigarettes. This has been proven it can lure children in just like porn, drugs, and explicit television shows. They will experiment, but it can ruin them. It goes on and on but parents are supposed to be there to protect as much as they can. It is outside influences that can be very strong and that will claim these kids. We can only prepare them to stay away from what is harmful to them until they understand all of it. I believe it all boils down to prejudice. You can argue until your blue in the face, and it won't get you anywhere because of a commitment to hate brought on by ignorance. Anyway, who gave them the right to judge others. Not God.
If you don't like people, don't bother with them. It isn't healthy for anybody all around to carry such hate and anger toward others they don't even know.
14 months ago: To act like there is no such thing as normal or perverted or black and white or right or wrong is just plain ignorant. I would never want to live in a society that is ruled by fools like that.

Is mugging and raping of old women wrong?

Probably not in Altruist's book if the women are a wealthy Republicans and the perpetrators are bullied, gay teens who are homeless and hungry.

"Being gay does not mean incest, they are not even remotely related."

"Trying to equate gay relationships to incestuous relationships is absurd, but the current taboo was not always so."

The two are very closely related whether y'all want to admit it or not. Both are abnormal behaviors and both should be recognized as such even if they are tolerated by society.

"…the rich and powerful might have created the chromosomal abnormalities that cause homosexuality in the first place"

Altruist even suggests that we should encourage their marriages so that their abnormal chromosomes are kept out of the general population of normal heterosexual folk.

""…abnormal chromosomes and thus perpetuate homosexuality, whereas if they were allowed to follow their natural god given inclinations, those genetic abnormalities would not be passed on."

How about that?

Like I said previously. Live and let live. Folks can marry farm animals for all I care. Just don't put it into comic books that are targeted to children and parade it as normal behavior. It is not.

Also, don't expect the masses of people without those types of gender and sexual problems and confusion to endorse and applaud by mandate. That's just foolishness and in the name of tolerance, I don't believe that is too much to ask.

14 months ago: Huey, do you KNOW any gay people. The vast majority of them are boring couples trying to keep a roof over their heads, food on their tables and save for retirement. They're not interested in "converting" anyone and they don't have an "agenda".

When they seek equality, there are many financials reasons to do so. Opposite sex couples that marry are afforded more than 1400 federal rights that don't apply to their same sex neighbors.
14 months ago: I'm glad you finally chimed in.

Yes. I do know gay people. I am acquainted with some and close like family with others.

The ones I do know are not in the market of converting anyone to their particular lifestyle. They have hopes, dreams and desires just like everyone else. They are real people facing real issues, facing real problems. They need love, forgiveness and acceptance just like all of our brothers and sisters.

However, it is naïve to the max not to recognize the evil that some in that lifestyle are capable of. That is not to say heterosexuals are any better in that regard. As a matter of fact the most heinous evil I have seen perpetrated has been by godless heterosexuals.

That being said, there is a definite agenda on the part of many gays, not just for acceptance but tor absolute endorsement of the lifestyle by everyone everywhere without reservation. They want to force normalization, endorsement, and promulgation, not just tolerance and acceptance. They then label all who have a difference of opinion as automatically hateful and fearful. That's non-sense in the highest order.

A children's comic where Casper is sexually attracted to Spooky for instance, is out of bounds. That's wacked and can honestly be seen as an attempt to reproduce by propagandizing impressionable young kids. A tactic.

As Altruist so eloquently stated, homosexuality is a result of abnormalities and should be seen as such. It is not normal and should not be portrayed as such especially to children as something that is.

That being said, there is no room for homophobia and not everyone that begs to differ with that lifestyle is in fact homophobic.

14 months ago: Huey I do not hate rich people, and I have consistently condemned any violence against any women for any reason.

I was merely trying to point out that there are many reasons for the wide array of sexual behavior, and that it is just plain ignorant to assume that there are only two possibilities; normal heterosexual wholesome Christian behavior, and sinful abnormal, perverted behavior. To the simple minded there can only be those two possibilities, Everything is black and white with no shades of grey.

In fact there is no black and white. There are not only varying shades of grey, there are millions of shades of all of the colors in the rainbow, and pure black or pure white are subjective.

I heard an interesting lecture today from Dr. Tyrone Hayes. He had been doing research on the most common herbicide in the country. 80 million pounds of Atrazine are sprayed on crops every year, especially in California which produces half of the food in the country. This chemical is also prevalent almost everywhere East of the Mississippi. It is in the water systems, it even comes down in the rain. http://www.sott.net/articles/show/241488...

One tenth of a part of this chemical in a billion will turn male frogs into female frogs. It does this by increasing the amount of aromatase which decreases the amount of testosterone, and increases the amount of estrogen in the body. This change occurs in all vertebrates. "This effect of atrazine has been observed and published in fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. The result is chemical castration (demasculinization) and feminization. In fish, amphibians, and laboratory rodents, the decrease in testosterone results in decreased sperm counts, impaired fertility, and a reduction in masculine features. Similarly, atrazine exposure is associated with decreased sperm and reduced fertility in humans. The increase in estrogen by atrazine results in feminization of males in fish, amphibians, and reptiles. "Feminized" male fish and amphibians produce eggs and egg yolk and some males even grow ovaries (become hermaphrodites)." http://atrazinelovers.com/m4.html

1.2 million pounds of this chemical runs into the Mississippi and down into the gulf and cities pump all of their drinking water from all up and down these tributaries. It gives people cancer and many other abnormalities and these abnormalities occur at least two generations past the exposure. It causes male frogs to act like females and other male frogs to mate with male frogs.

The simple minded may say that it is all a matter of choice, and that kids "Catch" their gayness because the homosexual agenda exposes their tender minds to the concept, but I suspect that there are many reasons. One reason may be that the increase in cancers and the increase in homosexual behavior is associated with the increased exposure to chemicals like Atrozine.

14 months ago: The only simple minded folks are those who believe there is no such thing as right and wrong. There absolutesy are the two extremes as well as all the shades between.

The scenario I painted regarding the mugging of old women is not subjective. To believe that is subjective about as simple minded as one can get. There is no gray area there. It is WRONG. Period. End of story.

Moral relativism is a bane to humanity. The more that philosophy permeates society the more anarchistic and self destructive that society becomes.
Behavior is behavior and we all have control over that. We all have predispositions to some degree or another. We all participate in behaviors from time to time that continued long term will prove to be detrimental and self-destructive.

A person can have an inclination to mate with a cow. They have the free will to choose not to but they believe it's okay and they have an internal cathexis that absolutely compels them to do it, so they must.

A person may be born into an alcoholic family and then you have some moron in a white coat telling them that they can never have a single drink or they will become lifetime alcoholics. They tell it like a scientific and inevitable fact.

That's all a bunch of bunk.

To believe that gay folks have no evil inclinations is also moronic. We ALL have evil tendencies. Furthermore, to believe that there is not an element in the homosexual community that seeks to recruit into that particular lifestyle starting at the very young is also beyond naive. It's retarded thinking.

I said it before and I will say it again. Live and let live.

Have sex with whomever, or whatever you want. Just don't be expecting everyone to accept and endorse everything others choose to do and certainly don't try to force the issue and paint with a broad brush and label ALL those who see it different as phobic. Many may be, but some simply are not.
That's all.

In a black and white world some people believe that marriage is a contract which allocates the woman as property to the male and that means that he is entitled to sex whenever he wants, or if the woman dresses provocatively it means she wants it, so forcibly having sex without consent is not rape. In the real world no means no.

In the real world some people explore bisexuality, some people have no choice over who they are attracted to, and some people are pressured to live a lie and pretend to love people they are not attracted to.

The morality of all of these situations are not black and white. If a person is married to a cruel person who beats them, I don't consider it evil if they are attracted to someone else that loves them and treats them with tender respect.

14 months ago: What are you smoking?

We don't live in a black and white world. There is black and there is white but there is also a spectrum between. Use your head.

In the real world there is such a thing as absolute truth. Moral relativist deny that. That's why they are so confused and sick.

Everything we do has a ripple effect on others. We may want to pretend that not true, but that's like Charles Barkley saying that he's not a role model. Of course he is, but maybe we shouldn't see him as such.

The morality of mankind is based on the concept of our truth. What is truth?

When we examine the Holocaust and question the "wrongness" and the "rightness" of the event we are confronted with the basis for what makes wrong and what makes right. What makes Hitler's Nazi Germany wrong in wanting to conquer the world and kill innocent people in the process?

The basis of truth used by Germany was the Darwinian principle of survival of the fittest. The Nazi leaders of saw their nation as a superior group a "Stronger People" and the rest of the world as an inferior and a "Weaker People" worthy of extermination.

They were WRONG in black and white.

Absolute Truth: "Something true for all people, at all times and in all places"

The problem with the moral relativist is that they don't believe that there is anything that can be called absolute truth. What makes the moral relativist irrational is that they claim that, yet they believe their statement is an absolute truth. That's just plain crazy.

Marry a shoe if you want, just don't call it normal and mandate everyone to get with the program. Capisce?
