I watched the President's State of the Union Address on Tuesday night and was saddened by the fact that our nation's leaders are so clearly divided. It's expected that priorities will differ from situation to situation and from individual to individual but our elected officials appear to be so stubbornly rigid that compromise is not an option. It's as if they will not agree to disagree unless they can be right.

The problems of the nation could all be addressed by the people in that room if only they would set their differences aside and work toward compromise for the good of the collective citizens that they represent. Our leadership includes far too many takers and not enough givers … so very little gets done. No one wants to admit when they're wrong. The object of the game appears to be to make the opponent look "more wrong".

Compromise is not an option in the Myrick household. Liam Myrick, a three-year-old Missouri boy, was diagnosed with stage-four Neuroblastoma last July. He's been on a rollercoaster of life and death experiences ever since. But, when he's not undergoing chemotherapy or physical therapy, he uses whatever energy he has to pass the time by painting. And his hobby is helping his parents to pay for his $500,000+ medical bills.

His family, who had already accumulated expensive debt when their older daughter fought her own medical battle last year is, among other fundraisers, auctioning Liam's artwork on Facebook.

There is no compromising with cancer. You either win or lose … live or die. There is no discussion and no debate. Liam Myrick is a trooper and his story is incredibly inspirational. His priorities are in order. Maybe when more politicians realize that their actions, or lack thereof, impact the lives of dying three-year-olds they'll work a little harder.
