Ovation: Happy No Pants Day!

Once, I thought about buying a kilt. It was a fleeting thought at a unique store in a town at the base of the Smoky Mountains. The store, Celtic Heritage, seemed really out-of-place in the region but was stocked with what appeard to be authentic Irish merchandise. The music playing in the store was wonderful and the imported colognes and other accessories were unusual … certainly, something that I would never find in a mall back home.

I thought about the kilt and wondered what it would be like to wear one. Of course, you'd have to get the socks and the boots and the belts and all the other "accoutrements" that must be worn in order to show the proper amount of respect for the traditional garment. The kilt was quite expensive and my vacation money was earmarked for other things (wine, fudge, etc.) so I didn't make a purchase.

If I had, I would surely wear that kilt today! Because today is "No Pants Day", a "holiday" based on the concept of not taking yourself seriously during which participants go about their business for the entire day without wearing pants. Said to have its origins at the University of Texas in Austin, No Pants Day is celebrated each year on the first Friday in May.

Not to be confused with The No Pants Subway Ride, an annual event organized by New York City's Improv Everywhere, today is the day to enjoy the absurd humor of going pants-less and acting as if there's nothing strange about it. Some will wear sturdy boxers while others will wear more revealing underwear but none of the participants will be wearing pants.

Can you imagine getting to the office and seeing people waiting for elevators, fixing coffee or meeting around a conference table without any pants on? I think it would be hilarious. Then again, there are some people that really should stay covered up as a public service. I wonder if I'll see any kilts.

It must be liberation to go without pants - especially on a hot day. Lots of people in many of our communities go even further and have a nude bicycle ride once a year. I loved Northern Exposure when in the early spring when everyone was still snowbound they had the Running of the Bulls where the males ran down the street nude.

I have obsered that those who wear "flowing robes" don't actually work for a living, I mean physically. They don't walk behind a plow, build houses with their hands or even mow their own yards with a walk behind mower. If they did, they would change their mode of dress.
