Obamas Break Ground on Victory Garden

Today, there was one news story about the Obamas that you can’t gripe about – although some of you will try, I’m sure.

Michelle Obama and the rest of the First Family broke ground this morning on a new vegetable, herb, and fruit “victory garden.” The 1,100-square-foot garden is the first of its kind on the White House grounds since Eleanor Roosevelt planted a victory garden during World War II.

The garden will produce a yearlong harvest of produce for the White House kitchens. The First Family and gardening staff will grow lettuces, squash, fennel, rhubarb, cucumbers, and sweet and hot peppers – but no beets – President Barack Obama doesn’t like them.

This news story makes me happy, because I consider myself an urban gardener. It’s hard to find space for a victory garden in a studio apartment, but I’m moving in a couple of months. I really hope my new place will have a south-facing deck so I can take on some harder gardening challenges!

(You should watch the YouTube video. It's a nice little history of gardens on the White House lawn.)

I hate vegetables and I don't like that he is using tax dollars to grow a garden.

This is setting a great example of family values. It is a sign that a family with children is living in the white house again. From the size of this garden, Michelle must be planning on lots of help from other family members.

More people should plant gardens. There is always plenty of wildlife to see in a garden; from butterflies to dragonflies and hummingbirds. There is nothing better than fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach or chard. Leave some room for some cantaloupe and summer crook neck also. My family members have planted a garden every year since WWII. There is nothing more All-American than planting a Victory Garden.

I can't wait to see secret service men standing next to the Obamas while they garden. You have to pay extra security to watch you plant gardens to save money. Talk about PR!

When I work in my garden I wear blue jeans and a tee.
Don't break a nail Michelle. BTW, never stoop over with a load of manure in your shovel. This is too funny.

Hey Siempre, better on the front lawn than inside the Whitehouse. Too late!

Funny. How does it feel when someone fights back?
I take it from your post you were never critical of the last President. Don't lie. Everyone will know.

Approximately a third of the automobile pollution in this country is attributable to growing, preparing and transporting food to the kitchen table. It looks to me like if more people planted a garden and became a little more self-sufficient (the American Ideal), that this would be a great benefit to air our quality and save millions of barrels of oil each year. It is also very healthy to get exercise and sunshine while working in your garden and to eat the fresh fruits of your efforts. From the overweight appearance of many in America, we could all learn to live healthier lives.

Good luck at your new place Chris. I hope it works out great for you. I have had at least a small garden for six years straight but I don't think it is going to happen this year. Gardens are hobbies that pay off in more ways than one.
