Today, there was one news story about the Obamas that you can’t gripe about – although some of you will try, I’m sure.
Michelle Obama and the rest of the First Family broke ground this morning on a new vegetable, herb, and fruit “victory garden.” The 1,100-square-foot garden is the first of its kind on the White House grounds since Eleanor Roosevelt planted a victory garden during World War II.
The garden will produce a yearlong harvest of produce for the White House kitchens. The First Family and gardening staff will grow lettuces, squash, fennel, rhubarb, cucumbers, and sweet and hot peppers – but no beets – President Barack Obama doesn’t like them.
This news story makes me happy, because I consider myself an urban gardener. It’s hard to find space for a victory garden in a studio apartment, but I’m moving in a couple of months. I really hope my new place will have a south-facing deck so I can take on some harder gardening challenges!
(You should watch the YouTube video. It's a nice little history of gardens on the White House lawn.)
