Thanks to the Obama's auto bailout, GM and Chrysler are now making profits again for the first time in seven years. http://record-eagle.com/tuesday/x1515771...

Today Chrysler paid off the last $ 5.1 billion of its $10.5 billion in government loans, six years ahead of time. http://www.npr.org/2011/05/24/136616954/...

Studies indicate that the bailout saved 1.14 million jobs and probably saved Detroit and Michigan from bankruptcy. Now GM and Chrysler are giving these workers an average of $3,000 each in profit sharing. http://www.cargroup.org/pdfs/prnov2010.p...

The Republican's economic and regulatory philosophies caused the economic disaster. They were wrong about the Stimulus. It saved us from the probable Depression that they caused. They were wrong about the bailout. It saved the auto industry and saved a million jobs. Now they are finding out that they were wrong about entitlements, People love their Social Security and Medicare. Republicans are wrong about giving another trillion dollars to millionaires. 81% of the people think the millionaires should be taxed more. They were wrong about Obama being a socialist, he is turning out to be pretty conservative. They were wrong about Democrats being weak on Defense. Obama got Bin Laden when Bush couldn't. They were wrong about Global Warming. The recent spate of extreme weather, the droughts and fires in Texas, the tornados, the record snows, and the record heat, are all the result of Global Warming. They were wrong about evolution.

In fact were the Republicans right about anything? I can't think of a single issue.

25 months ago: I hate my social security. If I had been allowed to invest the money I paid into SS, I would have several million dollars by now.

Stimulus - made banks even richer
Auto industry - lends credence to the maxim "even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes."

Defense - Obama didn't get bin Laden, the intelligence services did. And they did it using programs and protocols implemented by Bush.

Global warming - prove it. These storms and fires are still not the worst on even our limited records. We've been here on Earth for a blink of an eye, and we think we know everything about how it works? Hubris.

Evolution - Are you talking natural selection or single common ancestor/origin of life? If the latter, prove it.
25 months ago: Social Security-. "I would have several million dollars by now." I highly doubt it. If you could have invested your way to millions you would have. And even if you had what about the rest of the people SS is designed to help. Oh that's right #selfish.

Stimulus- I have to agree about the Banks getting richer. But they would have gotten richer regardless as that's the republican base. Right?

Defense- if it had happened on a republican watch it would have been credit thus. you just can't get over the fact that Osama's existence cant be bandied around as a republican tactic for fear mongering. Oh and 911 911 911.

Global Warming- Disprove it smartguy.

Evolution- If you and I are in any way related I would rather not know the truth.

25 months ago: If SS had been set up as an investment in the first place, I would definitely have millions in it by now. So would the poor people who haven't put as much in it as I have. It was a poorly conceived program, and will continue to be a drain, instead of an asset. Some states have PERS programs that are paying lump sums of $millions on less service than I have given SS.

"...they would have gotten richer regardless as that's the republican base...."
So Obama decided to speed it up, and make them richer even faster?

How many times did Obama reference 9/11 in vivid technicolor detail, while he was soaking up the credit for years other people's labor?

Global warming- don't have to, I'm not making claims here. The burden of proof falls on the accuser.

Evolution - Sorry, but I would reckon the odds of us being related in some way are pretty good. Is that some more of that liberal tolerance you are always running off about?

25 months ago: On Social security everyone would have been hurt when the market's crashed if SS was a retirement plan invested in the markets. The intent is a steady income that people can count on and plan on.

On the bank bailout, that was Bush's deal. Obama got handed a bailout that had just thrown money at the banks with no requirements and little record keeping. The Republicans believe that if you throw money at the rich they will do what is good for the country. (for banks that would be lending, for individuals and corporations that would be jobs) Instead the banks tightened up credit and the rich and corporations are just sitting on their money. At least Obama pressured the banks to repay the money soon, by tying that to limits on executive compensation.

On Bin Laden, Bush never did want to catch him. His father was meeting with Bin Laden's brother when 9/11 happened. Their families were tight! He flew the family members out of the country before they could be interviewed and while other air travel was still grounded. He let Bin Laden escape at Tora Bora, and then he diverted the war effort away from Al Queda to Iraq, which had nothing to do with 9/11, had not attacked us, had no weapons of mass destruction and was not a threat to anybody. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4oUlgA4G...

On Global Warming or Evolution, read any science journals, texts, or research not influenced by the fossil fuel industry or the bible thumpers.

25 months ago: On SS, another way of looking at is that the market wouldn't have crashed had it been shored up by trillions of dollars of SS funds. Plus, had the government kept their sticky fingers out of our "retirement" money, and not pilfered 40 trillion dollars over the past

On the bank bailout, that was everybody's deal. It sailed through Congress with bipartisan support.

Hillary Clinton, 2002:
"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capabilities, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members."

On Global Warming, I do that a lot.

Michigan was hurting and at last they have a reprieve for the moment. How will they make any money in the long run to sustain the industry with the majority of people not being able to afford any vehicle at all let alone new vehicles?
I know Obama loves the spotlight. He is always right there. I would like to see more concentration on jobs for everyone across the board. He keys on the auto industry which I think is a lifesaver but what about the rest. He has to do more to create jobs. This is heartbreaking to those without jobs that the reality is it is getting harder and harder to find one. When you fit the job perfectly, you never hear from them. Employers have the upper hand, not us. Practically no chance at all. It is unfortunate that the Republicans have been so hard on America's families by forcing their own priorities ahead of the needs of the people. They should of been able to work with the President for the good of this Country. He was really pushed in a corner. One by one people are falling off of their benefits. The realization of no where to run doesn't hit them until they are faced with it because they think the Government will come through for them and bail them out. There has been one promise made after another, and they all run out of steam and nothing is even attempted. It's dropped. Even though everyone blames everyone else, the problem is still there to deal with and that's why they are in office.

Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be
Completely voluntary,

No longer Voluntary

2.) That the participants would only have to pay
1% of the first $1,400 of their annual Incomes into the Program,

Now 7.65%
on the first $90,000

3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from
their income for tax purposes each year,

No longer tax deductible

4.) That the money the participants put into the
independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the general operating fund, and therefore, would
only be used to fund the Social Security
Retirement Program, and no other Government program, and, Under Johnson the money was moved to The General Fund and Spent

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.

Under Clinton & Gore, Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed.

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month -- and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to 'put away' -- you may be interested in the following:

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate.

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?

A: The Democratic Party.

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social
Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the 'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US

Q: Which Political Party decided to start
giving annuity payments to immigrants?

A: Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party.
Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!

Then, after violating the original contract (FICA),
the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

25 months ago: Box...What a mess. That is something that should be brought up in the news over and over again. They take advantage of the people because the people aren't aware of what is going on because they are too busy making ends meet and the coping with stress on a daily basis. Also, many feel that they put their destiny in the hands of the Government and never think about it being detrimental. Politics is something they don't think about. They vote when they have to but by then it is too late to save anything worthwhile.
You had mentioned before the taxing of ss. I see where it is taxed.

25 months ago: Republicans control both Houses. Apparently, being wrong has little to do with popularity. I have a theory.

For the sane person - a government must create a best use of resources or it gets replaced. (20 % of voters are in this category)

For a less sane person - politics is mainly showmanship. Government's product is always contentious and there will always be conflict about any government decision. And it is government then, that must handle its created conflicts. Therefore, Republican's win because their conflicts are real show - stoppers! (80% of voters are in this category)

80 % operate on feelings, like those that don't know that the current House is Republican dominated, and the current Senate is Democrat dominated. Thus the longtime appt. of Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) as Majority Leader of the Senate.

I can see why it feels like the Republicans control both houses. The Democrats are fairly ineffective.

25 months ago: In effect the Republicans do control both houses because they insist on filibustering every single bill so nothing gets done unless there are 60 votes. Nothing gets done without at least 5 or 6 Republican votes and they are very good at maintaining discipline and voting as a block, because they can cut off all funding, if anyone doesn't toe the line. You are right Sunny the Republicans are bullies.

OOTB Initially the cost of SS was pretty small because everything was cheaper then. FDR also signed the GI bill that paid the millions of unemployed returning servicemen $20 a week so they wouldn't starve. It also allowed 7.8 million returning GI's to go to school. They could also borrow $ 12,500 from the government and buy a house, so 2.4 million GI's took advantage of that! This was still during the great depression but the home building stimulated the economy and ended the depression, and heralded the longest time of stability we have known. http://www.gibill.va.gov/gi_bill_info/hi...

Maybe we need to restart this program to get the economy going again and pay for it by ending both wars, and closing down most of the 1000 foreign bases and slashing the military spending.

Social Security was also one of FDR's most popular programs and accounts for why he was the only president to serve four terms. Democrats have increased benefits and also increased taxes on the program to keep it solvent. republicans have always opposed it and tried to kill it.

Social security has worked just fine for 75 years and it will continue to work fine. In fact it is the only government program that is NOT bankrupt and the rest of the government has been borrowing from it's huge surplus.

The Right wing propaganda machine is very effective at condemning SS. In fact only 21% of the people are aware that It will remain solvent until 2037 at which time if nothing is done they will still be able to pay 80% of benefits. It just needs to be tweaked a bit by raising the income cap to $250,000 as Obama proposes.

According to a new survey paid for by AARP and conducted by GfK Roper, 85 percent of adults oppose cutting Social Security to reduce the deficit; 72 percent "strongly oppose" doing so.

retiring people on sub-poverty incomes, while the government steals the "surpluses". Tell me again how the money I pay in toward my future security becomes a surplus, for the government to come and take whatever isn't eked out for my subsistence?

Had the Government not "borrowed" (and let's be honest, does anyone really expect they are ever going to pay any of it back?) trillions of dollars, people wouldn't have to be living off $1400/month after years of hard work, thinking their government had a plan to care for them in their old age.

The PERS system in my state kept right on ticking without a hitch, right through the recession, and nobody lost a cent of their benefits. Other states are doing far better than mine, giving $million+ lump sum settlements plus a monthly check to their retirees. And then you have the states like NJ, who have borrowed their PERS systems into insolvency, just like the US government is doing.

25 months ago: Al..In reality the Republicans don't have the control of both houses.
If the voters are made to think that way, then we will have the same old political machine running this country. Maybe that is what the Democrats think and just gave up.
I saw the polls last night and doesn't look good for Republicans. It looks as if people are finally waking up to the damage done. Republicans want that Medicare and Social Security gone. I can just imagine the effect it will have long term on the Seniors who depend upon it and how it will effect people on social security disability or young children whose parents die off on them. . Gov. gives me the impression that we are taking something away from them, yet Gov. has it's hands in the pie all the time. The monies taken will never be replaced, and they don't want to pay it back. Then, of course, they will cover their tracks by trying to abolishing it all together.

25 months ago: You are correct Sunny that the republicans don't really control the Senate. They just make it very hard to get anything done. While the Democrats controlled the House they passed 490 bills that were waiting to be voted on by the Senate, but the Republicans filibustered and used procedural hurdles to make everything harder and slower.

Lawmakers used to cooperate and party ideology took 2nd place to things that were good for the country. No longer. The Republicans often do things that hurt the economy and the nation just to be contrary. They reflexively oppose anything the Democrats do even if it is good policy.

Recently the Senate voted on the Republican plan to kill Medicare. Now it is on public record that 40 Republican Senators and all but 4 Republican Representatives, want to kill Medicare. We won't let people forget that.

81% of people want tax increases for the rich but the Republicans want to give another trillion dollars in tax cuts to the rich while throwing old people out in the streets, closing schools, libraries, swimming pools etc. We won't let people forget their priorities, which is to help the really rich and hurt the other 97% of the people in the country.

25 months ago: Al....Yes, I agree completely. This Administration has affected the people emotionally, physically, financially, and in the long run the future of America dealing with foreign powers. It goes on and on because we are losing our credibility. Discourse has hurt the improvement of our environment and has caused lies and deceit to come from it in all areas. It has ruined the face of America. There has to be a system with better balance. It shouldn't be where anyone has the majority and power of control over anyone else.
Everyone says good things about Clinton, and he did well for us. Much depends on the person running the Country. I don't believe we can take another 4 years of this style of Administration.

If anything, there were times in our history that people did love a couple of their Presidents.
It would help in the long run if someone out there cared enough about the people and not just out for their own gain. I tried contacting a Town Rep to speak at a function in her own district for educational development that we are trying to raise money for the students. The word out there is for communities to help themselves financially, how can you do that when officials ignor you. They are so big-headed it is sickening or is it that they don't really have a clue about leading and bluff the people.

Oh yeah. Just announced the Obama Bail-out will end up costing 14 to 18 Billion Dollars of lost taxpayer dollars. Am I wrong? 14,000 to 18,000 Million dollars? So much for loaning them the money. Oh, forgot. Unions and Government workers got the money. Not Joe U.S.A.

24 months ago: I thought we were doing pretty good to have gotten 98% of the stimulus funds back. NO ONE thought that any of that money would be paid back at the time.

Was this investment worthwhile? Was keeping us from going into another Great Depression worth it? Was saving the entire auto industry worth it? Was giving jobs to between 1.2 and 3.3 million people worth it? Was increasing the Gross Domestic Product 4.6% worth it?

24 months ago: Al I would like to point out that your studies which indicate all those auto industry jobs were saved is based on a "hypothetical" situation. If the auto industry went completely belly up maybe these numbers could be viable. However if we are going to deal with "Hypothetical" numbers and situations then I will do a quick study myself and see what happens.

First I will factually not hypothetically save the American taxpayer $104,000,000,000 by not bailing out the auto industry. Then rather than basing my study on the hypothetical situation that the auto industry goes belly up I say it goes into bankruptcy, restructures and comes out better than before. Then since it is not locked into all those unrealistic and non competitive union contracts as before it actually makes cars better and less expensive than before and Americans begin to buy American cars rather than imports. So now the American car companies hire thousands of new workers and PRESTO this study shows by not bailing out the auto industry we just saved Americans billions of dollars and created new jobs and wealth for America for decades to come.
24 months ago: Many many people do not realize the Obama administration instigated these depression saving actions. We see these very large loans are paid back and we know it is a GOOD thing. But we fail to realize it was not Congress, it was not the Banking System, it was not the FEDs who pulled us out of a depression. Credit where credit (pun) is due.
