Why Choose Organic Clothing
What is organic cotton and why are organic clothes better for us?

In order to answer this question we must go right back to the beginning of the supply chain to the cotton farmer. Conventional cotton has become increasingly dependent on chemical pesticides and fertilizers using about 10% of all agricultural chemicals and 25% of insecticides on just 3% of arable land ¿ that's more than any crop per unit. And the use of all these toxic chemicals takes its toll.

ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION - reduced biodiversity, reduced soil fertility, the pollution of water supplies.

INTOLERABLE DEBT - as the pests become resistant to the chemicals the farmer must borrow more and more money to buy more crops, whilst profits get less and less

HEALTH - The WHO (World Health Organization) estimates that 20,000 deaths and three million chronic health problems each year are the result of agricultural pesticides in developing countries. And it doesn't stop here. The next stage is processing the cotton fiber into a garment. Chlorine bleaches, formaldehyde, silicone based softeners, optical whiteners and azo dyes are all routinely used today in the processing. Many of these chemicals threaten the health of workers whilst also causing more environmental pollution. Finally, a buildup of all these chemicals are found as residues in the finished garment which may affect the health of the end user. Not wanting to cause alarm, there is another way. By adopting organic farming principles cotton can be grown in a more sustainable and socially responsible way, benefiting the farmer and the environment whilst providing your baby with the softest and healthiest baby clothes you can possibly buy. The philosophy of organic farming is to work with nature rather than against it, by balancing and producing a diverse ecosystem using natural predators and crop rotation. The result is a stronger crop which is better able to defend itself. The organic cotton crop then needs to be manufactured and this consists of several major processes including the ginning, spinning, knitting or weaving, dyeing, cutting, stitching and laundering. And throughout this process toxic chemicals are very closely monitored to ensure that no formaldehyde, silicone based softeners, heavy metals, chlorine bleaches, optical whiteners or azo dyes are used.

If we now return to the question we asked at the beginning - Why is organic clothing better for us? The answer can now be understood a little better.

By choosing organic cotton clothes you are reducing the impact of contact with chemical residues which may reduce the risk of allergies and also offering a much softer yet durable garment. Choosing organic cotton clothing has an even greater impact worldwide. Organic cotton clothes are not only a great choice for your family; they also help protect cotton producers and their families too.

Piccalilly is a Yorkshire Dales run clothing brand, run by people who love the environment they live in and who wants to source in a socially responsible way. As an ethically conscious brand they have been leading the way producing stylish ethical baby clothes and ethical children's clothes that are colorful and modern in design. As a forward thinking business we are committed to trading fairly with suppliers throughout the supply chain whilst also working towards environmental best practice. Making the right choices isn't always easy and we don't claim to do things perfectly. But on a day to day basis we try to make progress to find better solutions to what we do.

We are dedicated to sourcing products on a fair trade basis and our organic baby clothes, organic children's clothes and organic bathrobes are made from Organic FAIRTRADE Cotton - a guarantee that producers in developing countries are getting a better deal. Our organic baby clothes were recently included in a report by ETHICAL CONSUMER Magazine who gave us the seco

isn't ignorance bliss?
24 months ago: Yes, I understand I am ignorant.

Can you misdirected "ethical" dirt huggers admit the same?

By the way, did you know banning DDT ended up killing hundreds and hundreds of thousands of babies and children in Africa due to malaria?

24 months ago: Everyone is ignorant, and staying there is bliss. Closing your eyes is bliss.
Yes I know about about the DDT. You are really stretching this topic out.

Do you know how many people die from spraying chemicals on cotton? How many water ways are polluted with toxins from industry? I am sure you do. How many farmers after selling there crops make no money? How many children are malnourished, living in families that can't make enough to eat, or send their kids to school.

Pulling out one example is doing what?

What is wrong with ethical practices. At least it is a step in the right direction. Farmers getting fair wages, kids going to school, food to eat. Being socially responsible. Supporting communities.

Or is it better to have farmers spray chemicals, contaminating their water, the air, themselves, their food. Children working in fields because they cannot afford to go to school. Then after all is said and done, they go sell the crops for less then what it cost them, leaving them in more debt.

This is a step in the right direction. We a need to make choices and start stepping in the right direction.

24 months ago: I'm still waiting on the "bliss" by the way.

My eyes are wide open.

By pulling out 1 example, DDT, I was making sure you understood that I, in my limited mind, consider the "organic" world hogwash.

I imagine noone has ever died from chemicals being sprayed on cotton. Never.

I am against pollution too, but Mother Nature can take care of herself pretty good.

I also do not think that Mother Nature is God and should be worshiped. I perceive you do think so.

"Ethical" to me means being honest. It has nothing to do with the clothes you wear or what food you eat or if you use plastic bags or bring your own. Nothing.

Pesticides help farmers feed the world and save lives. Anyone who obstructs the use of pecticides should consider, if their elite mind allows it, that they may be causing a starving person to go without food.

I consider, in my limited mind, that absurd.

But, I may be wrong..............

I am so glad your eyes are wide open. You may eat and wear all the pesticides, etc you want. Its a free world.

We all die one day. I prefer to die from old age. Some prefer to die from disease. I suppose we can die faster or slower. With all the chemicals sprayed on crops, do you really think there is no affect on the body.

One only has to use a little common sense. Since there are ways to farm without all the pesticide use, why not. Its better for everyone in the long run.

Since you want to save us all from starvation via chemicals, you may like to hook up with http://www.monsanto.com/careers/default....
they want to do the same thing...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts
24 months ago: What exactly are the statistics of dying from old age disease free if you don't eat, drink, wear, sleep on anything that was touched by a chemical?

Seaweed anyone?
24 months ago: when i was a child we drank pop at Christmas, New Years and birthdays. Cookies were home made. Dinner was home made. Today you walk into a grocery store and the shelves are full of pre made items. The freezer section too.

Two people work to make ends meet, and food that is pre made seems like the easy affordable option. Food on shelves or with long best before dates does not just stay fresh by itself. These companies don't practice using the best ingredients available, more often they use cheap ingredients.

In a gluttonous world we are overdosed ourselves with garbage. I personally would rather not.

As for clothing, have you ever worn or touched a bamboo or organic cotton?
24 months ago: As far as the "pre made" food, if you don't like it, don't buy and eat it. It is simple.

It is fascist for someone to say "I don't like it, so nobody gets it." People like that are bad people. Very Bad People.

I've never heard of bamboo cotton or organic cotton. The cotton I have feels great.
24 months ago: Sure I agree if you don't like it don't buy it. Many people do not realize how unhealthy some of their choices may be.
