After the most recent recall worldwide of more than 1 million vehicles, Toyota needed some good news...And they got it. A study that was being conducted by the Federal Highway Safety Department that has gone on for ten months has concluded that the reason for the issues Toyota was facing wasn't electronic, it was the drivers.
Safe To Drive According To Even NASA The commission announced that Toyotas were safe to drive now in spite of their assertion last year that owners should stop driving them. The NHTSA partnered with NASA and determined that the auto's in question were Safe. NHTSA Secretary Ray LaHood (who made the initial statement about not driving the autos,) said that "We feel that Toyotas are safe to drive." The report they filed put the blame on sticky accelerators, floormats, and on drivers pressing the gas pedal when they thought they were pressing the brake.
Some Still Don't Believe It This will help Toyota in the litigation that has been filed against them all over the U.S. But still, some think the report didn't detail enough of the issues concerned. One consumer safety watchdog group has claimed that the results of the study didn't convince them. The President for The Public Citizen, Joan Claybrook, said that, "I think it's a failure of evaluation because there are so many cases where there was no problem with the floormat and it was clear the vehicle had runaway on its own." Mrs. Claybrook was a Secretary at the NHTSA also.
In the meantime, all you Toyota owners can go out and get that "feelin' to drive."
