So, you are wondering what this post could be about. Is it a joke? I assure you it is not. I want to talk to you about my favorite form of douche.

The neti pot.

The nasal douche or neti pot as it is known has been used for thousands of years as a natural way to clean the sinuses. It has been known as an effective way to ease the pain and swelling associated with hay fever, allergies, and sinus infection. A neti pot can be made out of just about any substance, and have been made out of ceramic, glass, metal, and plastic.

A sinus wash is very simple to use, and is basically letting gravity flush a saline solution in one nostril and out the other. When I first started using saline to flush my sinuses, I used a mild solution at room temperature. Gradually, I used a stronger solution with warmer water, and the results have been wonderful.

I started out using the Sinucleanse brand of solution packets, and a plastic neti pot that came with the starter kit, but switched to an effervescent solution packet that I get from my local drug store, and a large antique ceramic neti pot. I make it a part of my daily schedule, and it has helped me with my life long struggle with chronic nasal problems. I even cut out one of my allergy medicines all together.

Check it out. Try it. You won't be sorry.

I was wrong. Try moving to a location with more than 40 percent humidity.

Maybe pick a few boogers from time to time.

19 months ago: haha, there are just a few folks who could be written about in political douche rants, right ;)

I figured you for a booger picker. You sharks, all alike.
19 months ago: Yeah well Alex_. I scratch my butt also. More than a few folks fall into that category. It would probably be a shorter list if we discussed who isn't a political douche.

Back to topic. What about all of that stuff you force back into the sinus cavities? Your body already rejected it once. Now you turn around and flush it back into your system hoping it will drain out the other side? Don't get me wrong. Why not just use a humidifier and let it work naturally.

19 months ago: I haven't used the Netti Pot that you've described but I do use on a frequent bases NeilMed's Sinus Rinse. It consists of a squeeze bottle with a rounded nasal applicator and little sugar packet size packets of a saline mix that you combine with warm water. As yo gently squeeze the bottles cvontents into one nostril it will flow out the other. It is great to clear your sinuses whether you are sick allergic or just plain obsessed.

19 months ago: I would fall under the allergy column, but leaning toward the obsessed. I love using my neti pot. It makes my nose feel wonderful. Thanks for the info about your brand of solution packets. If I can find them, I'll try them.
19 months ago: A well written article with an attention getting headline. Informative, too. Have a nice, well, you know what I mean.
19 months ago: Yeah, I'm a big fan of nasal irrigation too! Not to be gross, but especially when there is a lot of sticky mucus plastered against the walls of my sinus cavity a slow, salty, warm nasal irrigation does wonders to flush all the stuff out that I could not blow out! Truly a genius whoever invented it.
19 months ago: So true. There's something satisfying when you actually see or know there's stuff coming out!

I have the Neti Pot, but then after the 2nd sinus surgery my doc gave me a a bottle that sounds like what you're describing. I actually think it works better. It was the first time that I was able to really see then feel results.

Yeah, that guy/girl who invented it has made a buck or two huh.
19 months ago: When I first found out about it, it was quite by accident. I was looking for the saline nasal spritz and I found this instead. I didn't buy it initially because I knew nothing about it but I did some research and my MD told me that very few people don't come out of using it with unpleasant results. The only caution they advise is to blow your nose gently afterwards because otherwise it can pop eardrums. Yeah apparently the Neti pot in particular has been around a long time.
