Hello, Everyone!

Every now and again, the RantRave staff starts to get antsy. We love all of your contributions to the site, but the status quo has become a little tiring. We find ourselves getting into a rut by reading a post, followed by another post, followed by another post. Then we write about something. Then more reading. We find some comfort in the office fish and the occasional Starbucks run, but that will only get us so far. On one rare occasion, we even found ourselves starting an office Fight Club, but we set up so many rules and guidelines, all we could really do is insult each others personal hygiene.

Some people, when they get in a rut, delete everything and start fresh (Welcome back, Siempre!). We, however, do not have that luxury, so we need to find other ways to keep ourselves interested. It's not that we don't love the site or the writers on the site, but even the most happily married couples find ways to keep things fresh.

So, we brainstormed, spent some money and came up with a great list of upgrades, which we think you all will appreciate and enjoy. There are so many, in fact, we are rolling them out in two phases. The first of which is happening right now and the next in a month, or so.

Here are today's new and exciting features...

Get Paid to Post

Okay, so this was unveiled on Christmas, but it deserves more attention. As many of you know, if you have a PayPal account, we allow you to link your Google AdSense to your posts. Previously, we rotated your accounts with ours, which gave you 50% exposure. We decided that you deserve your full share, so from now on, your ads will appear on your posts 100 percent of the time. It's our way of saying thank you for being awesome.

There are other sites that give you 100 percent of your ad impressions, but to my knowledge, no one else can promote you to Google News.

That leads me to...

Donations!

That's right! You can now send us money (beginning Monday)! We are not begging or requiring, just letting you know the option is available. Donations will be used for website maintenance, server costs, and other business needs.

We are hoping to get through 2010 without having to accept a government bailout, and, with your help, we won't have to ask.

RantRave Community Guidelines

Once upon a time, a gentleman named Coloranter suggested a Code of Conduct. Finally, after 9 or so months, we have implemented a short list of guidelines. For all of you who have already signed up, the only real difference is a new link in the footer (which is also linked in the external links), but for new people, they now have one more box to check, stating they have read the guidelines. Please give them a read, so you at least know what the new folks are seeing.

Preview Your Post

This one is exciting. We've added a step to the Rant/Rave writing process. When you complete your Rant or Rave, add your pictures, links, etc., and click "Continue," you will be taken to a "Preview your Post" page. Please read your post carefully, checking for spelling errors (we also added spellchecker to the title), grammatical errors, etc. before you publish your post. This will save you the hassle of having to delete and republish your post, after you discover you misspelled "their." Or is it "there"? "They're"? Anyway...

Comments

Finally, you can now delete your own comments. But please, use discretion.

We made a few behind-the-scene changes, but they're either dull or extremely top secret, so I won't be sharing those. We have a few more surprises up our sleeves, which will be unveiled in the coming month, so stay tuned.

Thanks again to all of our faithful Ranters, Ravers and Readers!

25 months ago: Correction: Under "Get Paid to Post," I said "PayPal" when I meant "AdSense". Sorry about that.
25 months ago: I'll send 5 bucks a month if you add a "Who's currently online" status.

25 months ago: That's not a bad idea, but it'll have to wait for future upgrades.
25 months ago: So, put a number on the cost of upgrades. How can we help if we don't know the number? We might all get together and have fundraising to help. I'm feeling a cake and cookie sale coming. I would consider a Bar-B-Que sale but it seems global cooling has my pits on hold for the next few months. This is "OUR SITE" also. You and the staff just slap us back into reality when needed.

25 months ago: Nah, I can't do that. It's inappropriate to talk dollars and cents.
25 months ago: 4, 5 or 6 digits without the decimal point?

25 months ago: I can assure you we need less than AIG.
25 months ago: Cool, then we all can agree to start with a 4 digit number.
When it becomes a 5 digit number we can roll your heads...
25 months ago: I like the direction you guys are going. I have to say since the new adsense change has gone into affect, while I am still not getting rich, it is nice to see measurable fruit for my "labor"! This has also made me work to write better material and hone my craft...get better. Win Win for everyone. That said...rantrave will certainly get a piece of my new found "wealth"...as soon as google pays up....lol!
25 months ago: I love the new setup, especially the preview mode. Thanks for the 100% adsense. Every little bit helps us struggling writers. Looking forward to continuing our writing/posting relationship.
25 months ago: I'm going to have to contribute more, those nickles and dimes I haven't been getting might pay the internet bill!

Still looking for that log in carryover to go into effect.....
25 months ago: I'm curious Alex...is it possible to put in an option to change all or some of the tags after the article is published or would that break some internet rule? It stinks sometimes when you write a good article, but it just does not get the hits because that tags you used arent as good as you had thought they were.

25 months ago: Thank you for the upgrades. I really appreciate the changes that allow for easier editing.

I still don't understand how we can get paid for our posting. How about one of you folk that do understand, doing a rave explaining the process?
25 months ago: Thanks for the offer Alex. But no thanks. I for one value my rights and want keep my freedom of speech and wish to remain independent of government regulations. By accepting compensation I could be opening a door that I do not want opened.

Thanks again for providing a much needed avenue of communication.

25 months ago: Harshaw - At this point, no, you can't change the tags. That may be in next month's upgrades, but I can't verify that right now. I would recommend using something like the Google Keyword Tool (google it) to find out which words and phrases are more searched than others.

Altruist - Here's how it works. The ads on our pages are from Google AdSense. If you have an AdSense account (which are easy to set up), we allow you to post your ads on your pages. When someone clicks on an ad, you get credit from Google. Each click is worth anywhere from $.05-$5.00. Once you reach $100, Google will mail you a check.

It's a slow process. I've had an account for over a year and have yet to receive that check.

To set up an Adsense account, go here...

http://adsense.google.com

...and set up an account. It takes a few days to be verified, but once you are, go to the "Get Paid to Post" link in the footer and follow the directions.

I hope that helps!

If any of you have questions, please let me know here, or drop me a message.

Thanks Everyone!
25 months ago: I for one am tickled with the opportunity to delete a posting. I wrongfully jumped all over Siempre, and I was able to delete it.

25 months ago: I like the 'Preview' feature the best. I hate making spelling or grammar mistakes and not being able to correct them.
