Medical Marijuana Works for Pain
Written by
It is amazing how many people flat out deny that medical marijuana works for pain. I recently read someone's comment about a pros and cons list on medical marijuana and opiates for pain management. The commenter said that comparing them was stupid and creates misinformation. This astounds me. The crux of the article is that although medications work, medical marijuana works for pain, too. Proponents of medical marijuana legalization or utilization are not saying other treatments do not work at all. The point is that meds may or may not be effective, but medical marijuana works, too. Cannabis is effective for pain as well as other conditions. Medical marijuana is a versatile medication and the black and white thinking must stop.

A great big plus is that medical marijuana offers effective pain management without the horrible side effects caused by the traditional meds. Medication's bad side effects range from extreme dependence, increased chance of death due to respiratory failure, constipation, rapid tolerance increase, and a rebound cycle of pain with semi-relief. Medical marijuana works for pain without causing constipation that makes you feel like you are passing a boulder that is going to kill you. It also counters nausea. Medical marijuana patients can use different strains so their tolerance doesn't rise.

I'm sure medical marijuana is effective pain relief for many. Medical marijuana treats several different conditions. It's logical that some things don't respond or that medical marijuana isn't the right treatment option for all. I think the fact that medical marijuana works for pain is terrifying to the pharmaceutical industry. Medical marijuana is a direct threat to the billions of dollars made by getting people dependant on opiates. Pharmaceutical companies build in rebound effects to keep people from stopping. If I was the big business in town (big pharma) threatened by the blooming mom and pop shop (medical marijuana dispensaries and co-ops) then I'd be spending money hand over fist to discredit the effectiveness of medical marijuana. Medical marijuana is a highly effective booming industry.

Federal government restrictions are supposedly being loosened for those arrested with a legitimate medical marijuana recommendation. This month a man's house was raided in Washington State after a false tip to the police said he had a marijuana grow operation. Although there were plants, it was a fully documented medical marijuana grow operation. The police were courteous (after kicking in the door) and offered him advice on filing an insurance claim for the door. They did not burn or brutalize his marijuana plants for medical use.

Medical marijuana works. It works for pain, nausea, muscle spasms, inability to eat, migraines, neck pain, and so much more. It is too bad that the reefer madness frenzy ideology still exists because there are so many people who refuse to acknowledge the effectiveness of marijuana as a medical treatment option. The words on a medical marijuana authorization state that "the potential benefits of the use of marijuana would likely outweigh the health risks for this patient." Medical marijuana patients are probably scrutinized and evaluated before being authorized more so than any other patients receiving prescriptions. Medical marijuana works for pain. I wish everyone who needed relief had the chance to at least try cannabis.

(from a social networking site) comment about the MMJ pro/con list "just about the stupidest assertion iv'e ever read. Opiates have a huge place in pain mgmt., it does what no amount of cannabis can do..this type of ****ty reporting is what creates misinformation."

Let's not pretend the animus against Marijuana is a conspiracy by big pharma when the reason is primarily the hypocrisy of social-conservatve values that permeate our society and perpetuate the 'reefer madness' and waste huge amounts of the public treasury to prosecute their war on drugs.

At the same, let's not pretend it's a cure for every disease under the sun when most people simply want to use it for recreational purposes. The solution is easy - decriminalize and tax the hell out the hell out of it just like is done for cigs, booze, and gambling.
22 months ago: Sorry, you're wrong here. And, that link is just more government B.S. about drugs. Marinol is not medical marijuana. It is synthetic THC and it does not work like the real thing. It's also only available to cancer patients (at my hospital), so for those with legit needs for medical marijuana it is a no go. The other problem is that actual cannabis contains cannabinoids and other chemicals that make it so effective. I don't think at that the findings that Marinonl isn't as effective is just a case of people wanting to smoke it because many patients don't.

Let's tread lightly when we pretend that a pill is any less hazardous than smoking marijuana. Besides there are many other options, such as vaporizing or using edibles for the consumption of medical marijuana.

You are right though that there are those who are riding the coattails of the medical marijuana ride in hopes that it just gets legal so they can spark up a joint. I also believe the solution for this "drug war" is somewhere in decriminalization, for more than just marijuana. All in all though I think our views may fall along similar lines. Agreed that it is not a cure for everything, but it does damn sure work.

Pot was criminalized by those in power to feed our sons and daughters, to the prisons that makes them billions each year by having 25% of the world's prisoners.

Politicians today are 99% criminal and treasonous to the Constitution and to us THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

We need to restore the original constitution, and restore all that made us the greatest nation on earth.

As a government corporation, the commie Liberals are killing us.

We need to take back control from these animals and restore our common law.

I tell it like it is, I pull no punches, tell no lies, and I am as I am

In California where they're attempting to legalize it outright with a ballot initiative, guess which political party is against it. Yes of course, that would be the Grand 'ole Party that yaps about small unintrusive government whle touting for a police state to impose their social conservative religious values, and "oppose legalizing dope" - see this California GOP Party position paper:

And so it goes at the national level - it's generally Republicans that attempt to keep the 'reefer madness' fantasy alive with the exception of rare libertarian type Republicans such as Ron Paul.

Marijuana is nothing short of a wonder drug for me. I have more pill bottles than I can count and none help anywhere near what pot does for me.

22 months ago: I know exactly what you mean. I think it's a hard concept for many because they have not experienced it. By it, I mean both chronic pain and medical marijuana as a pain reliever. Instead, it's just easier to say MMJ advocates are all a bunch of stoners wanting to smoke pot legally.

Thanks for your 2 cents! They're worth a lot.
