Kevin Skinner, America's Got Talent

They’re calling him the American Susan Boyle. Mr. Kevin Skinner, from America’s Got Talent. Chicken Catcher. “A hick from Mayfield, KY.”

Call him what you like, the guy’s a star.

When Kevin Skinner, singer and guitarist, stepped out on the stage, the America’s Got Talent judges ripped him a new one. They mocked his clothes, his job (I didn’t even know that on America’s Got Talent, chicken catcher guys were allowed!), and his unpolished Mayfield, KY upbringing.

Kevin Skinner was the last audition on last night’s episode. He was dressed simply and sat on a stool with his guitar. The audience laughed at his brief interview (with the infamous “chicken catcher” line) and looked ready to boot him off.

But within a few seconds of Kevin Skinner’s rendition of “If Tomorrow Never Comes” by Garth Brooks, the tears were flowing. (You can see a Kevin Skinner video, via YouTube, to the left.)

Obviously, he moved on to the next round. Kevin might even be the eventual winner. All he needs is a better shirt.

Seriously, watch the Kevin Skinner video, and if you’re not touched, let me know in the comments. If you don’t like it, “Heartless” by Kanye is probably more your speed.

I watched this last night, and was so ashamed to see how many people laughed and thought that this simple man was a nothing. I would love to have this simple man as my man. Hard working, and knows how to enjoy life. I prayed for him before he sang to have a voice that would just stop all the laughing....and HE DID! Kevin Skinner you are AWESOME and never let anyone say different. If I ever have the chance to meet you I would be proud to shake your hand, be your friend, and Lets go Mudding....I have my own mud toys. Jeanette

We never learn, do we? Still judging books by the cover - it's such a shame. You miss out on so much when you can't see past the outside. Hooray for Kevin Skinner and those like him, who remind us we were all made in God's image.

I have played this "tape" more than I can count since hearing him last night. Oh how I hope he wins. He is so pure in his demeanor and delivery of a song. God bless you, Kevin. I'm praying for you. And I sincerely hope someone in the recording industry sees or saw you and will come knocking on your door. You need to have your gift distributed so others can be blessed to hear you.

Kevin is the real deal...he's always been laid back and easy going and if America has gotten so far from that, maybe it's a good thing that AGT found Kevin Skinner! Kevin and I went to the same schools as kids and he's always been the way that he is now. I'm so proud to call him a neighbor and I hope his dream comes true for him. He's great!

I just watched his performance again on the re-run of AGT and was just as mesmerized as the first time. Watching the audience and judges go from laughing and joking him to stunned and on the verge of tears was the best TV moment I've seen in a very long time. I am rooting for this guy all the way to the finals.

I too just watched him for the second time on the re-run. Amazing. I'm disappointed that some people have learned nothing from the Susan Boyle example not to judge a book by its cover. Soooo down to earth. I imagine a group of his friends hanging out on a porch, drinking a few beers and him singing & playing his guitar.

Kevin Skinner deserves to win AGT. I haven't been keeping up with AGT so the re-run was the first time I saw him sing. I agree with everyone that has already commented and thought the exact same things, I had prayed that he was amazing and he is, and that people need to stop judging people by there covers! Agreeing with sweetpea63 especially!

Wake Up America!!! This is how many of us are treated ALL through life. Kevin Skinner deserves all the good fortunes that are coming his way. If this guy is the type of person that can reach into your heart the way he did and will, look at the person with long hair, beard and looking a little rough in a different light. Please.....
Play on Kevin. Good luck, I and millions will now know your name.

It is not everyday that we have the opportunity to witness such purity. The best things in life are simple and free. God has blessed this young man and will continue to do so. This powerfully transcends all barriers. I hope and pray for his continued and sustained blessings to carry over and touch as many people as possible. AMEN!!

I am a vocal coach in the Branson, MO area. I have coached a lot of guys who want to sing like Garth Brooks. None of them even came close to what you did on national television last night. Actually you sounded like KEVIN SKINNER! Better than Garth. More emotion. I was in tears at the way you communicated with the audience and drew us all into your heart. You could hear a pin drop in that huge auditorium…and that explosion of screaming and applause says everyone else agrees with me and the judges. You have what it takes Kevin. God has blessed you with something thousands of "wanna be's" search for and never find. You can do things that no one can teach you to do. It's a God given gift that you must use for HIM. Keep Him at the center of your life and He will guide you always. We are all praying for you. I want to meet you sometime and if you ever come near Branson and don't at least tell me one of your "Chicken Catcher" stories I will be really heartbroken. Seriously, you have what it takes to make it big. Don't let anyone change your honest, approach to presenting yourself. Congratulations. I really think you are going to be a millionaire several times over. God Bless you and keep you safe from all the people who want to change you! Keep your ball cap on backwards if you want to. Your voice and your beautiful smile couples with the twinkle in your eye and makes everyone forget how you are dressed and where you are from. I really hope you are on Grand Ole Opry before too long! You can be a legend. I'm sure Garth would agree. See you on the Grammy's!

Your gift is wrapped up in a lot of humility, pure and simple. I could listen to you all night and I am stoked that you not only stopped everyone in their tracks, but that you're on your way to big and better things. Don't change, not even for money (it is the root of all evil!). Sing, touch and bless the hearts of many and they will in turn do likewise.

Not only does Kevin have talent, he showed tremendous grace and class in handling the reception from both audience and judges. Kevin has been blessed by God and is surely more of a man and a gentleman (and gentle man)than meets the eye. The best for Kevin is yet to be. If tomorrow never comes, thank you, Kevin, for sharing your gift with all America!!

Our whole family loved Kevin's audition. I don't think I've ever seen such a heartfelt performance--it was nice to see the audience and judges were stunned into silence once he started playing. My wife and I are not country music fans, but if this fellow had a CD out, we'd buy it today--no question. Someone should let this guy know he's got fans--doesn't seem like he has any sort of web-presence. Hopefully, he'll find out through friends and family how much his performance touched people.

I think we always forget what true passion is for anything we do. Sometimes all these high paying entertainer forget what moves us. It's the passion. And I saw it in his eyes and how he moved. I hope more talents come out through these type of medium.

Boy,am I glad I Tivoed this show! I've watched this video several times and am truly amused by watching how Kevin "turned the tables" on the judges and audiences' first impression of him---within 10 seconds he had quieted the audience to where you could hear a pin drop.

It was great seeing Nick's and the judges first impressions before he sang and then afterwards. We should all remember to not judge a person by the way they look!

Kevin's sincerity and humbleness is truly a blessing to all who heard this song!

Afterwards, I, like Kevin had a tears in my eyes.

Best of luck Kevin!!!

ive watched kevin sing over and over again and still it brings a tear to my eye
kevin you are the real deal and you sing from the heart witch touches all
its very easy to be a critic to someone you have never met before on first looks the critics and selfcenterd people who judge before they see
and the ones who want to get the first laugh in
its easy to put people down and be sarcastic to them as they say
sarcazium is the lowest form of wit
they have very little to loose but what amazies me the ones that follow
then someone like you comes along and
there views change
" ohh yeah i had this feeling that he was going to be good"
and if it had gone the other way
" oh yeah i said he was going to be ##### "
Kevin you are fantastic and the true american spirt which has been taken over by computers and mobile phones oh yeah and 24/7 shopping
going back to basics and enjoying life thats how it used to be now theres not enough time in the day to do everything and its none stop
My hat goes off to you Kevin well done and if i ever come to the usa i would love to meet you
Now do what you do best just be yourself and sing from the heart
( sorry guys for ranting on but hes just showed us how we should live and be humble )

What more could I add to what has already been said? I'm not sure if I was more impressed with his performance or the way he elevated himself above the reception he received. I will be first in line to buy the CD Mr. Skinner will make. While others may debate what "class" is -- Mr. Skinner defines it. I would think, too, Garth Brook would feel honored by that performance.

I am so glad to know that someone from this part of the country comes onto a show and shows the whole world that just because you dress funny or talk funny or don't live on Hollywood Blvd. mean that your nothing. Kevin does not know me personally but i have seen him in passing at the hospital i work at several times. Kevin would come faithfully to see his ailing Grandmother where she was a patient on the floor i worked on. I grew up about 20 miles from Kevin and i know where he comes from and i know that he will show America that it's not where you come from or what you look like. God loves us all and God has given this man a talent and he was able to prove it to EVERYONE that he has a genuine soul and put his whole heart into that song he sang for the whole world to hear. This man deserves the respect of America. I get so sick of the other parts of the country putting down us Kentuckians when they should be searching their own lives and actually see someone from the inside and not the outside...Kuddo's to you Kevin and i am proud to say that i am from Kentucky and i will be voting for you and i wish you much luck!!!! God bless you!

Sorry to disagree Shannon1010, but here in Chicago, no one I know thinks Kevin looks or talks funny. Country music is pretty popular here & from the first time I heard Kevin sing, I thought he did the song BETTER than Garth Brooks! I have most of Garth's CD's & I'd gladly put Kevin Skinner CD's right along side them! There may have been some people laughing at Kevin but I felt the majority were laughing "with" him...as I was! I've watched his clip dozens of times & he makes me smile, laugh & brings a tear to my eye, each & every time. I don't see that it matters where the person or the voice comes from. What matters is how that person or voice makes you feel! Kevin Skinner has my vote all the way to the end, as well as so many other people's vote here in Illinois & across our whole country!

My wife and I watched Kevin's performance numerous times tonight and each time it was as emotional and as moving as the first. It is rare to see someone transcend the prejudice that can come from the way Americans have become so superficial and judgmental. My wife and I are not country music fans but this will be an artist I will immediately make part of our permanent music collection. Don't change Kevin your perfect and what America needs in these tough times. Good luck I wish you the very best...

I can count on one hand the number of people in this world (such as Celine Dion) who's voice is so amazing, even if you have heard them sing a thousand times, it is impossible not to weep. Kevin is now one of them, Garth Brooks is not. Thank GOD we have found Kevin.
I like Peirs and Sharon is OK (even though her husband is one of the biggest skum bags on this planet), but I was very disappointed that they did not stand up as the rest of the building did. I thank you David for doing so.

I adore this man, usually for this show I am a little biased against singers. Mainly because if their talent is worth a million they could audition for any other singing or dancing show alike and win for that matter too.
At first I was laughing and joking, but the second he opened his mouth to sing I was stunned silent. It was simply beautiful; I don't think I've ever heard a better singer in my life.

And not only does he have an absolutely amazing talent he is a genuinely good person, the perfect idol. He has me wishing I was American just so I can vote him into the finals. And I'm Canadian so that's saying something~

Hi folks, I need some help here. Yes, he is honest, and humble, and a child of God, but his voice is off tune. He is flat and pitchy. Maybe I don't understand country music, but how can he be a good singer if he doesn't sing on tune? Help me here, and be honest. Thanks,

To jtcash...I don't understand why you say that Kevin's voice is "off tune." Didn't you read the accolades that the voice coach wrote about him, and are you forgetting that the judges are professional singers?

It appears that millions are in awe of Kevin's singing,as I am, so I respectfully disagree with you.

i think he was better when he was left to his own devices. i think in his second and third performance he was told what to do and how to act and sing and it totally threw him off and made him out of sorts and nervous. "tomorrow never comes" was awesome and proves he has an exceptional voice. those stupid producers think they know everything about performing and think they have a formula for how things look and sound best. they just screwed him up.

To Alleen: The off tune comment is by RevMark, not me.

I agree with you "toniface". I've performed in the past and have been told what to sing only to have it less in quality than what I feel I'm good at doing. There are some other factors involved here as to why his quality wasn't a pure and good as usual: the pressure is/was tremendous, his Daddy is ill, he was the last to perform, and to know about how many people are watching you is overwhelming. Taking all this into account, he did a very good job. Nashville is watching closely. We haven't heard or seen the last of Kevin by a long shot.

To RevMark: the "off tune" was only a hair. Others were, also, but you haven't remarked about them. Given the circumstances, he did very well.
Posted 5 Months Ago
To RevMar... Kevin is Skinner is a raw talent and not a professional, so what are you are rumbling about? If you don't like the guy don't post a non-constructive criticism/comment period.
Posted 5 Months Ago
To Ike524:
I am really confused...I NEVER said anything negative about Kevin Skinner. I said a professional said that he had a lot of talent...this comment about his having talent was written by a voice coach. I was admonishing someone for saying something negative about Kevin. I love him, and think that he has a wonderful voice. Maybe I was in a hurry, and didn't check my post as well as I should have, but , believe me, I would celebrate if Kevin won the competition!

My heart is touched by Kevin, and I am sorry to hear that his father is ill. I sure hope and pray that he recovers from whatever his illness is, and I am hoping that Kevin wins the competition, which would be so great for what seems like a wonderful and loving family. Kevin is such a sweet person, and I would be ecstatic if he won, as would millions of others.

Incidentally, I want to thank you for defending Kevin. That made me happy!

To Ike and others, I never said that I did not like Kevin Skinner. I just said that I don't understand how many people think his voice is good enough to win one million dollars and perform in Los Vegas. There seem to be to me many more talented singers on the show and other acts, the guys who dunk the basketball for instance. What I was really asking is what attracts people to Kevin. Mybe I am missing something here. I undertand he sems to be a nice, humble guy, but that doesn't mean he is talented. What do people see in his singing talent? Thanks,

I watched Kevin on TV the first time and thought it was wonderful that he was a nice country guy like some of us (I'm a country girl), but had my doubts about if he could pull it off......and then he began to sing. I stood in awe for awhile, then had to sit down and I remember thinking to myself, "I'm watching history in the making" because right here is the next Jonny Cash, Merle Hagard or Waylon Jennings. Classic OLD country style that I have not heard in years. He brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear him sing. And to see someone so grateful and modest makes me like him even more. I know some record producer is going to see the dame thing in him that so many of us do, and when he gets his chance, I will be lining up to buy his album. I can't wait!!!! Kevin, you're on your way to a great future. Never lose sight of where you're from, it's a part of you and be proud of it! And YES, I think you made all of your family and friends proud. I don't even know you and I'm proud of you!!! Keep up the good work!!!!

Kevin is a "natural", I think that is true. But, I do think many viewers wanted him to win because of his story. Barbara Padilla had a very touching story as well. If he was only nervous and pushed by the producers that caused his pitchy two last performances, then ok. But, if he sings "pitcy" in a big Las Vegas show--it won't work out. He needs to get a vocal coach to improve on that, so that he can be successful! He would still be his natural, humble self, but in tune! I really thought Ms. Padilla would win as she has excellent star material. But, I think she will probably do extremely well!
Posted 4 Months Ago
Yes, a voice coach would be very helpful to him, not to improve his sound, but to help him with delivery and appearance. However, I've seen Alan Jackson in jeans I'd use for rags. I think of Johnny Cash, one of Country's greatest singers and performers; he had trouble staying on key. I believe Kevin's slight trouble with staying on key had to do with nerves. I've performed before audiences, however NEVER before millions and $1,000,000 riding on my performance, and have gone a bit flat. It's all nerves. His initial performance is what is the criteria. I'll be in line waiting to buy his first recording, just as I will be for Susan Boyle's.
Thank you, Kevin, for bring your warmth and heart to a usual heartless, cold world of entertainment.

Being a country girl from WV I can really relate to Kevin Skinner when I came to OH at 18 to work. People mocking me and making fun of where I came from. As children we cannot help where we were born and raised. That just goes to show you that it does not matter what state or city you came from you can be anything you want to be. Kevin Skinner you are the MAN, you are so genuine and down to earth, I will buy your CD when it comes out and every one thereafter, you are awesome. Don't ever let anyone discourage you and try to squash your dreams. If everyone in the world was as kind and nice as you, the world would be a much better place. May God Bless You and your family and your career as a singer, songwriter. I think you are awesome. I hope you get a chance to read this from a fellow country girl who understands.
