Infinity and Eternity

As I was talking on the phone to my dear mother, the question suddenly popped into my head.

Is eternity the same thing as infinity?

Yes, I know that infinity is more a measurement of physical properties, and some say infinity has a beginning but no end. I think that infinity could possibly not have a beginning, only a point on the line where perception starts, and infinity could go in more than one direction. That would not make infinity eternal, because infinity is already there, regardless of how long it takes to get there.

In other words, if you set out to explore and conquer infinity, you would have to be able to do it unto eternity.

Eternity, on the other hand, is a measurement of time in which time actually has no meaning, because it doesn't rely on the movements of objects as markers, or milestones so to speak.

The question all this brings to my mind is, if Infinity and Eternity decided to duke it out, who would win? Or, would they kill their own selves by eliminating the other?

20 months ago: time v. space? Interesting question.
20 months ago: Box, Should I find that interesting? Is eternity the same thing as infinity?

Infinity, is of this world, and what the human mind and eyes can enumerate.

Eternity is where your Soul will spend determinable time. Are you ready for this?
20 months ago: Thanks for killing the thread.

20 months ago: Well I was hoping it was interesting, because it was interesting enough to me to attempt to write about it.

I was trying more to get into the concrete aspects of the two concepts, rather than focus on what each means strictly to my own little personal universe. Eternity and infinity both have reality separate from faith, they are the same thing for the believer and the non-believer. The only difference is where they spend it.

This was not meant to be a religious discussion, but feel free.

Infinity is the Mohamid Ali of the time and space concept. Eternity is a wimp in comparison. As infinity is infinate it includes time and space.

Eternity is just time and nothing more.

So Infinity floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee.

20 months ago: So are you saying that eternity and infinity are are a loop that has no ending because there is no beginning? The snake that eats its own tail?
20 months ago: No. Infinity is of mans design as your picture exposes. The infinate loop.
The same applies to scientists theory of a big bang and a limited universe.
A closed complex. Limited by space.

Eternity has no bounds of a loop and can run a straight line for all time. Limited by time.
20 months ago: Listen to TCG. Fairly good concept of the terms.

Infinity. no physical beginning no physical end

Eternity. Forever, no beginning in time and no ending time.

Numbers stretch into infinity for eternity, some say both ways.....

Hi Six

The word physical means nothing to infinity, infinity encompasses all, physical and unphysical that's why its infinite.

This word infininty is such a complicated word we have trouble getting our heads around it. Our knowledge base is very small and we only understand the dictionary of the word not the word itself.

Our knowledge base is restricted to what we are told and what we can see. If we made a pie chart of our knowledge of everything we would not even register on the pie chart. So we have a very finite knowledge, our imagination uses that knowlege to expand our minds. When our minds have expanded the expansion is related to something we understand.

If I wanted to live on the Sun, my mind would say to me, right we need a rocket that will get us there. We need unflamable food and non-boil water. I will need to have a space suit so far advanced it would keep me at my body temperature and so on. All these ideas are fantastic but they are all linked to what we know and understand.

If a totally diferent idea was used but the method and technology was not to our understanding, we would dismiss it. We would have to because it did not fit into our part of the pie chart. If an idea is linked to what we know, however far-fetched, it is understood, so it can be believed or dismissed.

If the knowledge is not in our section of the pie-chart, we could not even imagine it, as we have no links at all to different way of reason.

Its as simple as that.
20 months ago: I probably shouldn't have used the word "physical". Usually when the term infinity is used, there are other words used along with it such as "streches into", "goes on to", "continues into", all which relate to physical attributes of whatever the "thing" is that is doing it.

The reality of it is both words are concepts used to explain things we either don't fully have the words to explain or just don't know the full answer to.

None of us will live for eternity and none of us can see into infinity.
20 months ago: Eternity has to do with time, it doesn't have to do with bricks or space or other ideas, but only time. If you are talking about time, that's the word to use.

Infinity talks of no fences or barriers, endless, boundlessness. Here's a sentence that uses both words appropriately.

Eternity: 1. infinite time; duration without beginning or end. from http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/e...

That's what I was wondering. Since time is relative to physics, then in the absence of physics there is no time. So how could eternity be infinite time during a period that is totally lacking in physics?

Say, perhaps in the moments, hours, gleekons, whatever you want to call it, before our marvelous universe spontaneously sprang into existence. Did eternity exist before time was created?
20 months ago: The commonly agreed on idea, "time" could not exist without particles moving through space. Time indicates the persistence of particles in space.

If there was an early time where there were no particles in space, then the idea we have and commonly agree to, did not exist.

No particles in space = no time. That is, our common definition of time does not apply because there is no method to measure, to keep track of it. The clock's hand can not go around if the clock does not exist.

Was there a something, a time, before space and solid particles? Who knows, not I.

20 months ago: If there was an infinity, infinity would be everything. That would include eternity.
20 months ago: Six, None of us will live for eternity and none of us can see into infinity.

That is an incorrect statement, at lease 35% of the population in America, will see and live and experience eternity.
20 months ago: Not by my reckoning. There are way to many hypocrites in that 35%, better downgrade your estimate, IF what you believe is the truth AND some can achieve the perfection required, maybe 5%. Then again there are the Catholics and all they have to do is have a priest forgive them on their deathbed and they get a free trip to the Pearly Gates, so I'll give you another 3% for a total of 8%.

Of course I have 100% confidence that what you think is going to happen isn't so nothing for me to worry about.
20 months ago: Good post.

Is this a subtle dig at the pleasures of a long conversation with your dear mother, OOTB?

"In other words, if you set out to explore and conquer infinity, you would have to be able to do it unto eternity."

I like that statement. But I would add my view that if you explore infinity at an infinite speed, it will take you no time at all. Probably.

Even infinite speed is a boundry. Infinity cannot be measured, not even by itself.

20 months ago: The poet William Blake had a thoughtful perspective on this: 'To see a World in a grain of sand, And a Heaven in a wild flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand, And Eternity in an hour'
20 months ago: Should I apologize if I tell you what the creator has to say on this subject?

Rev 21:4 He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever.
Then the one sitting on the throne said: I am making everything new. Write down what I have said. My words are true and can be trusted.

Everything is finished! I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give water from the life-giving fountain to everyone who is thirsty.
All who win the victory will be given these blessings. I will be their God, and they will be my people for eternity.

Rev 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" Everyone who hears this should say, "Come!" If you are thirsty, come! If you want life-giving water, come and take it. It's free!

What is the alternative?

20 months ago: Psalm 147:5 Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

His understanding is infinite - Margin, Of his understanding there is no number. That is, This corresponds with his power to number the stars. There is no limit to it. It is not bounded; there is no point reached where it can be said that there is no more; that it is exhausted. "There is no searching of his understanding."

Question, would you like to be ordinary or an extraordinary person?
20 months ago: Instead of criticizing Him, embrace Him. Look at this closely:

18 months ago: infinity is endless,an indefinately great amount or number, space or time,
eternity is a time which never ends or has no limits
so my humble opinion infinity would kick **** as eternity is time but infinity is more
