How Liberal are you?

Having travelled the world, experienced many people, cultures and races I always saw myself as an open minded, enlightened person. A liberal. Willing to listen with an open mind, share knowledge and built upon the good in this world.

Experience has taught me that there are no black and white in this world.Races nor issues. Yet there are grey areas too. Being a liberal or conservative is one of them. As the tides are changed by the moon, so should your understanding of issues change around us on merit, circumstance or ethics. What do I mean?

Well, we live in such a society today that if you want to be seen as 'cool' and liberated, you call yourself a liberal. Society made us believe that anything else is, well, uncool.

Conservatism = uncool = rightwing = racism

This cannot be further from the truth. In everyone of us there is a bit of both, conservatism and or liberlism. It's a tug-of-war on issues at heart but some 'isms' are more than others, due to experience and our immediate circumstance or surroundings. People are different. Yet if we were just liberal or just conservative, we would either live in an anarchyic or despot world society. We do not. There are some order and I believe it is because we have a balance, or at least for the time being.

I believe you can still be a liberal in general terms but when there is an issue on ethics, we should be intelligent, and strong enough to make the choice between right and wrong. If choosing the 'right' option means being 'conservative' for that specific issue then so be it. If we are really human rights activists, care about unfairness or injustice in this world, then standing up for right, should not be a problem. However, if our 'ethics' are based on being cool then what example are we setting for our children?

Unfortunately in the day and age we live in, the values, not even talking about ethics of many individuals are so tainted, that fear stops them from making a stand. Most individuals are so hell bent on clinging on to their 'liberal trademark', that when something comes along that sound politically correct, but yet is ethically wrong, they would rather be wrong, than to be labeled conservative, politically incorrect, right wing, or heaven forbid, 'racist'!

Is our morals as human being so corrupt that we cannot judge issues on morality anymore? Are we so blinded and held 'prisoner' by words like 'racist', right winger or politically correct, that we are too spineless to make a stand on issues, right or wrong? Allowing double standards and injustice to reign, rather than to lose our liberal admiration from our friends, is just adding to more injustice and double standards.A vicous circle than will have dire consequences as there are no fair balance of justice anymore.

What does it say about our society? We are held at ransom by the power of words which shows our moral decline as individuals, groups or nations. Not only will our children, and their children be worse off due to our inability to judge right from wrong, but each generation will be closer to our extinction as modern humans. The individual who cannot judge right from wrong is doomed for they would rather 'nuke' their soul, than lose their 'liberal status'.

Mixing words is like making fruit cake.
It looks pretty, weighs a ton and sits around uneaten on the top of the refrigerator until you decide to throw it away.
31 months ago: I am a right wing flag waving conservative married to a granola eating tree hugging liberal. And we are an interracial couple to boot. lol Our friends gave our marriage about 6 months when we got married. We have been married so long I cannot remember what it was like to be single.

But we take things issue by issue. I don't want to be hemmed into a lable. Like TCG I don't care if I anger people. I think it is important to be honest and not just try to be likable, and unoffensive and PC.

I really like reading RSG, TCP, OOTB and SS. Even tho SS is on the way other side of the political spectrum from me, I think he is honest and he stands up for his beliefs, but I don't think he feels everyone should just agree with him.

I agree more with the conservatives, buI like to see the liberal perspective cause I think we can work together. I like that my husband doesn't agree with me all the time. I like that my views don't threaten him. We have balance.

I am rambling tho, it has been a long day.
31 months ago: Gez, don't worry about pissing someone off.
You should actually be pleased if you do.
Anger is an emotion and if you caused an emotion your point had value as the emotion is a reaction.

Go to bed girl it's late in Manila.

31 months ago: As Churchill was supposedly quoted "If you're not Liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not Conservative when you're 35, you have no brain". The terms liberal and conservative are in actually British political parties and their ideologies do not transfer over properly to the left and right wing of American politics. Honestly I think that most would agree that small government is a good thing, low taxes are good, etc. But also we would all agree that BASIC services need to be provided by government and it's chief role is to protect it's citizens. It's to bad that there are so many nut jobs on both extremes in American politics.

Changing your perspective is bad enough when it's beneficial to the individual. Changing your perspective seems to be even more difficult when it doesn't necessarily benefit the individual making that change... Talking about the issues and writing to the politicians that are supposed to be working for us are steps in the right direction though.
31 months ago: no time to comment, too many of these little bags of treats with the presidential seal on them, to open. Laters.
31 months ago: "What America needs is a strong conservative base when it comes to the economy and a liberal views when it comes to social issues. Military and policing should be played by ear! "

I could deal with that :)

I really want to see if the GOP come up with a good health plan, I would like to see one that is available to all, but I really don't like anything with the words mandated or forced or penalty in it. I get nervous when I here that the government can force or mandate me to do things. Gives me the heebie jeebies.

We should have the freedom to chose not to participate. Some people don't even believe in modern medicine, while I think they are stupid personally, I think we should not limit the freedom to choose.
