This has got to be the quote of the day. Peter Chou, HTC's CEO said about the company's plans to go beyond skinned interfaces.
"It is not enough to be skin-deep. We need to go bone-deep."
And HTC is putting its money where its mouth is in this regard. Making Investments in companies including Onlive, creators of a broadband net based prerendered gaming system which has seen a lot of press recently with the release of their mini console and game service. This investment solidifies HTC's proactive approach to gaming as a major share of the smartphone market and if sucessful could put them on an even keel with Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play, the upcoming PSP phone.
HTC is also pouring money into the coffers of Saffron Digital which provides customized video distribution systems for mobile device users as well as DRM solutions for publishers and special on the fly encryption for securing content during distribution.
There are rumblings in tech sectors regarding the rumor that HTC may be also heavily involved in developing their own Application distribution network similar to the App store or iTunes. Which if successful could give the company a leg up on the competition in the Android Smartphone market.
These are innovations driven by market competition. HTC taking steps to battle the big leader Apple for a piece of the pie. Other big name manufacturers are sure to follow suit, and while not all innovations are successful, investments in the tech surrounding them almost always pays off.
