God Is Punishing You For Going To Church!

Attend Church and Die?

There has been a couple of interesting studies recently.

The first study shows that most people in the country do not think that natural disasters (like the Quake and Tsunami in Japan, or Katrina) are punishment by God, except for the Evangelicals.

Only 29% of Americans think that God punishes the nation for the sins of the few, but twice that number of evangelicals think that is the case.

That gives rise to nutcases like the Westburo church members who show up at the funerals of our fallen heroes saying God killed them because the nation tolerates gays.

"Most white evangelicals (84%) and minority Christians (76%) believe God is in control of everything that happens in the world."
http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/20...

That makes the next study really interesting.

Our nation has an obesity epidemic. This results in earlier deaths from diabetes, heart disease, and other weight related maladies.

It turns out that those who attend church regularly are 50% more likely to become obese than those who don't attend church.

So if you are among that 84% who believe that God is in control of everything that happens, the only conclusion you can reach, is that God is punishing people with early death, for attending church!

Perhaps in related news, White Evangelicals are the most opposed to Michelle Obama's attempts to reduce childhood obesity. http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/reli...

14 months ago: Benjamin Franklin invented the lightening rod which were very popular - except among the faithful who believed that lightening was God's punishment for the unbelievers, and that their faith would protect them.

Unfortunately the faithful ended up being punished much more than the unbelievers. The churches were especially susceptible to lightening strikes since their soaring spires were the tallest things around.

Nevertheless, I think that slaughtering people in an indiscriminate disaster in order to offer guidance would tend to indicate pretty poor communication skills.

Note to Conservapedia. Watch out for this man. He may be an atheist.
14 months ago: Glad I go to a church that doesn't have steeples.

Unfortunately there are plenty of ignorant folks to go around on both the religious and secular sides alike. Lies, fear and ignorance are the best tools the enemy has to use in order to steal, kill and destroy. It's nice to have been delivered from that mess.

The victory is wonderful.
14 months ago: huh? Are you saying church equals fat most of the time? Since you included a breakdown by race of the devout? Which I find stunning. Could you include the obesity rate of church goers by race? No?

14 months ago: Stan I think I would trust Wikopedia far more than Conservapedia but would trust real science over speculation. The Gallop poll in the conservapedia piece you sited asked people if they smoked, ate vegetables, exercised, etc. The author of the Conservapedia article argues that since the religious say they eat healthier than there should be less obesity. The study did not directly determine that there were fewer obese religious people.

The new study directly studied obesity. They didn't know why but perhaps overeating had something to do with it. (even if it is healthy)

TCG the study about the beliefs broken down by whites and minorities was done by the Public Religion Research Institute in partnership with Religion News Service. It was different than the obesity study done by Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The Pew Research Center survey, broke down approval of the government's involvement in reducing childhood by race.

Maybe you can get the three centers to coordinate efforts to study obesity by race and religiosity.

The intent of the post was not to infer that being religious causes you to get fat, it was to suggest that if there is a god or gods, that they are probably too busy to obsess about you eating broccoli or not, and that if there was a just god he/she wouldn't slaughter tens of thousands of innocent people (most of whom were probably good) because people are tolerant of others.
14 months ago: Is there a study amongst religious folks that fast on a regular basis?

Fasting is an excellent discipline that nurtures discipline, promotes health, and nurtures the spirit with proper focus.

I would be interested in seeing those stats.

I'll bet there are more tub 'o lards among moral relativists than there are among those who recognize their life as a gift from God and strive to live accordingly.

Nah,....He probably wouldn't do that,......but seriously,.......that would probably happen. Afterall, God is mysterious and dwells in unapproachable light which is knowledge. Then there are the stupid, ignorant, lazy people that make people gain weight just by looking at them. As an insult to injury,....alas fast food makes you slow. The time you spend at church? Who am I to question your priorities,.....or your God reference. I read about things I want to understand,......and I think a lot. I think about God,.. almost,...every moment of everyday, and I think I would rather cook my own food and try some new recipies because my wife died,.....least that's what they say but I think she's hiding. I know she's not hiding out here in Arizona because there are no tree's to hide behind,...
.....Arizona is in the desert. We are very dry and hot. Amazingly there is life out here, people, animals, ......small plants. Even more amazing is there are not many wild scape goat's,...........but maybe they just hiding too. I don't even like goat,......gamey,......
real gamey ya know. BBQ snapping turtle is very delicious,......with some cheese,......
......like on a sandwhich. You get your excercise trying to get them big snappers.
Tasty ya know,........real tasty.
