Gary Johnson, former Governor of New Mexico, officially threw his hat in the ring and became the first committed Republican to announce he's going to run against President Obama. Who is Gary Johnson? Good question. Most curiously, he's in favor of legalization of marijuana, gay rights, and a woman's right to choose making one wonder how he's a Republican or thinks he will appeal to GOP candidates. (source) Maybe he doesn't have to. Maybe his strategy is to use these tokens to lure independents and disgruntled Democrats to his fold. It's a strategy that has worked before – recall that Barack Obama said during the campaign that he did not support gay marriage. In any case, Gary Johnson shares a lot in common with Texas Republican Ron Paul– voice of libertarianism in the United States when it comes to his views on government spending and taxation. Meanwhile, he's a proponent of increased work visas and elimination of the border fence to the south – both of which are favored by many independents who do not share this rabid distrust and loathing for immigrants. He's an interesting candidate, who could bring some fire what otherwise might have been boring GOP candidate debates. Wouldn't it be fun to see him debate Michelle Bachmann and Donald Trump?

___________

Here's his wikipedia page for more background on this very interesting guy. Some of you may like a lot of what you read and be appalled by the rest, but no one can deny he's got a lot going for him, and certainly a lot more than some of the other people who've expressed the desire to take the reins of our country on the GOP side of the aisle.
