Help the 99rs or help the Rich?

Finally someone has come up with a concrete plan to help the long term unemployed, the 99rs, and the other chronically unemployed and unemployable.

The Republicans and the right wing has no plan to help these people. Their sollution to every problem is tax cuts to the rich. But in the free market economy, Corporations and businesses will only hire the cream of the crop. It is an employers market and they can afford to be choosey. They have in many cases declared they won't even consider job applicants who do not have a current job, because they fear the unemployed have lost their job skills.

So if the private sector will not hire the unemployed, especially the long term unemployed who generally have some deficiencies in education or job skills who will?

The government is the employer of last resort. Providing jobs, job training, and education, is better than people starving or living a life of crime on the street, and providing jobs is better for the dignity and self worth of the employees than unemployment.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) has introduced a plan which would create 2.2 million jobs and decrease the unemployment rate by 1.3 percent. Her plan would implement:

The School Improvement Corps would create 400,000 construction and 250,000 maintenance jobs by funding positions created by public school districts to do needed school rehabilitation improvements.

The Park Improvement Corps would create 100,000 jobs for youth between the ages of 16 and 25 through new funding to the Department of the Interior and the USDA Forest Service's Public Lands Corps Act. Young people would work on conservation projects on public lands including the restoration and rehabilitation of natural, cultural, and historic resources.

The Student Jobs Corps would create 250,000 more part-time work study jobs for eligible college students through new funding for the Federal Work Study Program.

The Neighborhood Heroes Corps would hire 300,000 new teachers, 40,000 new police officers and 12,000 new firefighters.

The Health Corps would hire at least 40,000 health care providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and health care workers to expand access in underserved rural and urban areas.

The Child Care Corps would create 100,000 jobs in early childhood care and education through additional funding for Early Head Start.

The Community Corps would hire 750,000 individuals to do needed work in communities, including housing rehab, weatherization, recycling, and rural conservation.

All of these programs would give highest priority "to the longterm unemployed -- the so-called "99ers" who have exhausted both their state and federal unemployment benefits. Federally extended unemployment benefits are set to expire this year, even though nearly 14 million Americans remain out of work and it takes the average worker nine months to find a new job."

The plan would be paid for by "separate legislation introduced by Schakowsky called the "Fairness in Taxation Act," which would raise taxes for Americans who earn more than $1 million and $1 billion. It would also eliminate subsidies for big oil companies while closing loopholes for corporations that send American jobs overseas."

So what do you think is the most important, fixing the economy, providing jobs and lowering unemployment, or reducing the deficit? 60% of the people think the economy should be the highest priority while the deficit came in a distant second place with 16%. http://www.pollingreport.com/prioriti.ht...

What do you think is the most important jobs or tax breaks for the rich? We have tried Tax cuts for the rich for the past 10 years and the rich have not kept up their part of the bargain. All of those tax cuts which caused most of the national debt, didn't get us any jobs.

During Clinton's terms we raised taxes on the rich and "that tax increase was followed by seven years of the best economic growth in our country's history, where everyone prospered, including the poor, the middle class, and the wealthy. The stock market tripled in value. There were 22 million new jobs added to the economy, the federal budget was not only balanced but we had a surplus and, according to the Census Bureau, the percentage of Americans living in poverty fell every year during the Clinton years – from 13.6% to 9.6%." http://thepragmaticprogressive.org/wp/20...
UPDATE - 9 months ago
The Republicans have refused to even consider this proposal and bring it up in committee. The Congressional Black Caucus has also produced 40 separate job s bills, none of them were even considered.

Republicans don't care about jobs They only care about protecting the richest 5% and the rest of us goes down the tubes.

You are going to force me to pay for these people to be in prison (which would cost many times more) instead of having the super rich pay their fair share to convert these folk into useful tax paying citizens who can help pay off the debt that the Republicans built up.

9 months ago: Al, it would be good at least if the college kids that graduated could at least get work. It is all geared to youth.
9 months ago: Liberalism/socialist/statism is CRUEL Al.

Everyone needs to earn money, not hold their hands out.

You want to turn this place into Korea.

(IT AIN'T YOUR MONEY TO SPEND AS YOU SEE FIT AL. Get that into your head.)
9 months ago: That's "North Korea" Al.

They put back into America less and less by cutting programs that are essential to keep this Country on its feet.
Is that fair? Unless the Government starts caring about the people, there is going to be a mass decline in the standards of living which is evitable the way we are headed. Government is supposed to be for the people. That is why we have one. If the people decide to turn on the Government full force, what will happen then? The Countries that don't care about their people that the US has been helping will turn us into who they are. We aren't in charge of where the tax money goes. So far, they have shown us who is boss and that they are totally in charge and the people have no say. They decide if there will be war or not and keep pouring money into it. They take what they want from the people and spit on them. The Government hasn't been working on creating jobs and is still sending the work overseas. No resolve has been met. Government doesn't seem the least bit interested. The people are having walls moving in on them. How do you break down those walls that are not enabling people to have growth? America is being destroyed from its infrastructure. The Politicians are there in their $1000 suits while the people are wearing rags and are being turned into beggers. I don't want socialism in this Country. I want it to be what it was before without these small-minded dictators taking us for a ride and playing us. They start chipping away at the people long enough they will make America weak. Something has to be done to stabilize the Country and all I hear are speeches based on a clear wanting of power and nothing else. They all are a bunch of fakes. These people out there with their big ideas don't have the ability to change anything. They make noise and bring false hope. I for one know what hard work is. I know what it takes to make it in this World. Our Leaders are putting chains on the people. That's the way I feel. The youth of America has a bleak future with the way they are stealing money and handing it over to the rich.

9 months ago: Guys if you knew what I have been through the last couple of years I think you would understand more about the 99ers. I've worked very hard. I've educated myself every opportunity that came available to me. In 2008 while I was working, my employer was stealing my insurance deductions and using it for themselves, therefore, lowering my actual pay. I didn't find out until I was forced to leave because they couldn't pay weekly wages. I left with a month's pay due me. I couldn't carry forward my insurance benefits because they weren't being paid for an entire year. Look how they left me. I'm a survivor, and I don't complain about my status, I just keep trying to find a way. I get mad at the careless manner in which the long-termed people have been treated. There is nothing we can do about it. I think that all the solutions are geared to youth and anyone older won't be considered. There has been descrimation out there to begin with. The long-termed loss time which was essential to building their future and toward retirement. These people are left in limbo without the strength and energy to carry out jobs as they did in their 20s - 40s. I feel terrible that people don't understand. Plus, the marketable people out there who got jobs took lower level employment with lower salaries to make a living. This hurts them to climb back into the saddle sort of speak to regain their career positions. I wish you only knew how bad some of these jobs are. They are deplorable. They have people working in unhealthy conditions w/o ac and treat them brutality. It is going back to the beginning of the Century. These low level positions don't hold employees with any respect and don't recognize employment laws at all. That is what is out there mostly. When you have the brains and the know how that can't be taken away from you. This talk about losing skills is rediculous. You are who you are. I grew up in business and then later worked for people who didn't have the knowledge I accumulated with direct involvement but having this knowledge didn't make me an asset. If you have brains, people won't recognize it. A job came up last week which was in pharmaceutical. The recruiter was all excited and said he needed references and my referral information. I waited and I couldn't get him on the phone, and I looked and there was no such job. These recruiters are taking advantage of people that are looking for work for their own benefit. They have to show activity. It is really difficult. They said today that there was a drop in unemployment but that is because these people are dropping off like flies and are becoming 99ers. I understand everyone's point of view, but if you only knew what struggles there are.

9 months ago: It does seem terrible! I wish someone would speak for the unemployed and concentrate on jobs instead of this debt nonsense.

All of the Republicans at the debate yesterday said they would reject any deal that provided $!0 in savings for each dollar of taxes. This proves they are not serious about ending the deficit. We will never get our house in order till all of the Republicans are gone.

The only way to create jobs are with programs like those above, and that will take money to fund, but the rich are the only ones that have any money.

It is outrageous that people are preying on the unemployed who already are hurting, and it is outrageous that companies would steal your insurance deductions. This is where a good union would help, but the Republicans are trying to kill all unions as well as all social programs like unemployment, Social Security, and Medicare, that people depend on to survive.

9 months ago: What is bad when I looked for help from the Labor Board with a couple of the other people who experienced the same thing, the Investigator looked over the books to see how much was owed to each employee and found our claims valid. That was the end of it and nothing more has been done. If you call regarding the claim, they say nothing has been done, and you have to wait. Possibly in 10 years I might get it back. The State put leans on their property in case they try to sell their property. The only thing wrong with this is that these people are back working and continue on and have no intention in paying back any of the people they owe. They are out and out cheaters. The State wins again with the penalties they impose on unpaid taxes. No one cares about this group out-of-work loss people who are facing a bleak future. There is a stigma placed on those long-term unemployed and that is unfair. These are people who have held down honest jobs and have faced their responsibilities their entire lives. God help the people. I believe it is a loss cause in hoping someone will come up with a solution for the more experienced worker to be able to regain their pride, dignity, and independence. It is terrible. They are a lot of talk Al and so far nothing has been done. Every day they seem to have loss of short term memory, and they change and move to something else. They have to get a check on these Agencies that have false job advertisements that only lure people in to benefit them. If people don't have money, they aren't going to have top credit rating, yet employment agencies use this as a tool to weed out people. They even have a computer program, and, even if you are qualified, there are key words in your resume that the computer searches out. If they aren't in there, you are eliminated from any interview. Something has to be done at the source to prevent these types of rejection. Ninety-nine weeks out of work eliminates people automatically.

9 months ago: You are right Sunny. Congress is broken and I wouldn't count on them to help anyone. In the current extremely conservative climate, anything getting done by Congress will hurt more than help.

So people will have to try to survive the coming bad years on their own. All Politics is local, so start building community and help each other out. grow gardens so you don't starve. Trade whatever skills you have with others in the community. Take care of a neighbors kids in exchange for their fixing your car and things like that.

I doubt that the Republican House will pass any decent Jobs bill let alone Jan Schakowsky's, but the value of this legislation is to show that the Democrats are at least trying to help.

There is even less chance that the House will pass a Fairness in Taxation Bill, but America is beginning to realize that the Republicans and the Tea Party is not interested in Fairness, or even in the National Debt. They are only interested in protecting the extreme income inequality and the huge tax breaks for the rich and the corporations.

Hopefully in 2012 Americans will punish the Republicans for being willing to destroy the nation economically and for lavishing even more riches on the super rich while harming the other 95% of the country.

I've been fortunate to be enrolled in classes geared to changing my career. At the end of this, I hope there is work.
We started setting up a Board in a Community. This is all it took to get noticed. There was an event held to bring people together to benefit their Community, but only a few showed up. Their excuse was they liked rap music instead of just regular music, and these musicians are successful, well-known fund raisers. Instead they didn't like the style of music, so they criticized this. The positive side of this is that the Local District politician's noticed and they came. I find that it is difficult to change a set mentality in people. If a group or culture set themselves up for failure, they won't be able to bring about change. I found that instead of keeping their focus on the matter at hand, they concentrate on the social aspect and their personal relationship with each other. People who try to fix things for them, give up.
Also, regarding employment, being forced to take lower level jobs, you don't fit in and there is a critical price to pay that comes along with that territory. A lot of prayers are needed to get us through. Hillary Clinton had said that America helps other Countries because it is in their DNA, and we have big hearts. Of course we do, but what about Americans that don't have enough to live on a daily basis. It is one thing to recognize this need in other Countries, but another thing not to see the need in your own. This attitude patronizes the people. I don't know if she has really taken a good long hard look at the other side of life in America. I've always admired her, but they won't step up to do enough. I'll never give into Congress' manipulation. About making gardens, it has taken off in other areas. I don't think it can feed enough people unless people that have the resources can help.

9 months ago: Why Americans Are So Angry

Republicans want the entire burden of deficit reduction to be carried by the elderly, the sick, children and working families.

BY BERNIE SANDERS

The rich are getting richer. Their effective tax rate, in recent years, has been reduced to the lowest in modern history. Nurses, teachers and firemen actually pay a higher tax rate than some billionaires. It's no wonder the American people are angry.

Many corporations, including General Electric and Exxon-Mobil, have made billions in profits while using loopholes to avoid paying any federal income taxes. We lose $100 billion every year in federal revenue from companies and individuals who stash their wealth in tax havens off-shore like the Cayman Islands and Bermuda.
