On Monday, in Philadelphia, a 17-year-old Phillies fan ran onto the field at Citizen's Bank Park and was tasered by an officer who chased him. Most in the sports world are now choosing sides, arguing whether the amount of force was excessive or not.

Those against tasing say he's just a dumb kid with a stupid grin on his face. Some people are seriously injured and sometimes killed by tasers. Just tackle him and haul him off. Those in favor of tasing say you don't know what he's going to do. In 2002, a father/son combo jumped onto a field in Chicago and assaulted a field coach during the game. Of course, there is always the Monica Seles stabbing, where a fan jumped onto the court and attacked her.

The Philadelphia Police Chief stated that the officer used an appropriate amount of force.

So, where do you stand? Personally, I think the Taser was appropriate. He knew he wasn't supposed to be on the field and he was clearly resisting arrest.

But, as I look at it more closely, at the "fan" level, I really have to agree with the taser. Ask yourself, "Why does someone jump on the field?" The answer is "to get attention" and "it's funny." Now, what's funnier than watching someone get taken down by a taser on the ball field? Nothing. There is nothing funnier.

Watch the video and let me know what you think.

I, personally, think it was totally appropriate. You never know what kind of crazies will jump the fence at a public event. Yes, he was a 17 year old tool, but still.

I think other than being a little sore, he won't regret what he did. His high school tool buddies will laugh it up, and he'll enjoy being popular for however long.
21 months ago: UH... Fat tub of lard cop (picture above) that couldn't run down an tackle a teenager? Why suffer a coronary? Taser the "PERP". Taser them in the back. Taser them when there is not threat. Tase. Tase. Tase. It is cheaper than disability and workers comp. OR, WAS HE JUST A PRIVATE SECURITY GUARD ON THE FIELD IN PUBLIC UNIFORM? I wonder is the city is going to say...

21 months ago: No, that was a Philadelphia cop. If you watch the video, the guys in the darker blue shirts are stadium security, but the guy with the taser (also carrying a gun) is a cop.
21 months ago: oh... six tubs of lard that couldn't tackle a teenager...

You really think a cattle prod up his butt was called for? They already had him corralled.

21 months ago: Who owns the park? Is it not public property???
Who paid for the park??? Not, the Phillies and certianly not Citizen's Bank.

You really think one of those big boys on the Phillie team could not have sent him to dreamland with a single punch if needed? I am still looking for the threat in the video. Is the a threat that I am missing?
21 months ago: I think the threat comes from an unwanted, unwelcome, unknown person on the ballfield. There are tens of thousands of people in that stadium. No one know what the kid was doing, or what his intentions were. And it's not the players job or responsibility to stop someone on the field. (not to mention the lawsuit that would undoubtedly be the kids parents response to non-lawenforcement corralling)

I hate to sound so cliche, but "these days" even a stupid tool of a kid could be a threat to a gathering of so many people. I'm sure they yelled at him to stop enough that he knew he had a choice to stop and give up. He chose to not.

And just because the "fans" probably paid for the majority of the park, doesn't make it theirs to do their bidding in. That's why we have laws and lawenforcement.

Love ya, Ganger, but I don't think we're agreeing on this one ;)
21 months ago: I love you too, Howdy. Your right we are not agreeing on this one.

Where was the threat that warranted use of force?

A taser is considered "non-deadly force".

A fire arm is considerd "deadly force".

Where was the threat to use either?

They should have just kept moving him towards a wall and pounced.
21 months ago: It's precedent now.

1st time at a ballgame ever.
21 months ago: Let's see, let fool run around the field acting like the **** he is disrupting the game that other paid big bucks to see or tase him? Tase him twice.

Now about that lack of threat TCG seems to think is not there..... Tell me TCG, could this fool had a bomb or gun secreted about his person that he was going to set off or take out and shoot someone? Maybe it was you he would have been putting shrapnel or bullets into. And you can forget about saying that everyone is searched coming into the stadium so he couldn't have gotten weapons inside, we all know there are many, many ways around security and his age has little to do with it as five year olds have been throwing grenades at GI's for decades.

And in case you don't know it, I'm against the increased scrutiny we US citizens have been forced to undergo due to the Patriot Act usurping the Constitution.
21 months ago: I bet he was shocked.
21 months ago: I think the kid got what he deserved. Of course it looked like he had the (portly) cop beat so it could have been a case of laziness.

I would love to know the back story though. I wonder if he had a sponsor who dared him to do it, and I wonder what kind of look he had on his face when he saw his friend hit the ground with an electrified barb in his back.
21 months ago: I would rather see Ryan Howard (not "The Office" puny version) used a deadly weapon. He could be like a field marshall deemed worthy of throwing his 6-4, 255+ lbs at any runners. It could even become a gimmick, petty criminals let loose on the field to try to survive. Kind of a gladiator meets running man thing. Even better, once Arnold's done governating let him join in too.
21 months ago: I understand there was another runner on that field tonight.

That slow, lazy tazer man may have opened a can of worms.
21 months ago: The gimmick has begun, now unleash Ryan Howard!
