The world of comic books has become the repository for new Hollywood scripts. It seems that no new ideas are coming out of the writers guild. Why did we renew their contract again? In any case, I can't blame them for turning to our printed and illustrated hero's of our child hood for inspiration. I think any body that can say they grew up after The Great War (WW1) and that would be almost everyone alive today, can say they have some what fond memories of their romps with comic books. The reason for this is the seeming commitment to the cause of good our paper hero's had. Face it people. Comic books made being good seem really cool! My grandfather, father, me and my son all looked to Captain America with pride and joy and strived to live up to his code of ethics "Peace, Justice and the American Way" Now I know you naysayer's will inevitably say that it was all propaganda but who cares? It was propaganda We could all believe in.

Today especially in a world of cynicism it stands to reason that we need something to realign our faith in humanities desire to reach back to our collective childhood years and to be good once more. It is not enough to pray people, if when we pray we forget the values that as children made us want to be hero's and not bullies. Comic books simplified the struggle between good and evil so that as children we could understand. Every hero had a simple rally cry that reminded us of a simple truth. Super Man said "Up, up and away!" This was meant to make us look beyond our mortal coils. It was meant to make us look to the stars and beyond. Spiderman donned his costume with reluctance each time but never declined his duty because he remembered the words of his dying uncle Ben, "With great power comes great responsibility." and tell the truth, is their anything more eloquent than that.?

With his surname meaning God in the Hebrew tongue, and the fact that he fought for Truth, Justice, and the American Way, his proclamation that we should look beyond our mortal coils comes as no surprise.

And another superhero catch phrase worth noting, not diminishing Captain America's "Avengers, assemble!", would be "Nuff said".

For Westerns, justice came from a gun, now justice can come from super powers.

Fun - but I don't know if you should take life lessons from them.

As I pointed out earlier, it is the simplification of moral issues that makes comic books and their superhero's such valuable teaching tools. When AIDS first surfaced it became not only a national scourge but the cause of much paranoia and violence fueled by hate, ignorance and a lack of understanding. The Spiderman and Hulk comic book lines from Marvel Comics did a 12 part story on AIDS and HIV and literally within the months that those 12 issues were published the discussion in high schools and colleges had increased from almost nil to actual focus groups and campus speakers etc. The one issue where the character who had contracted HIV was beat up by bullies in the spider man comic book line made the national news and for a few days at least there was a national discussion on the issue. I disagree with you. I think comics are a great tool, especially if you consider that comic book hero's belong to the pantheon of modern society. We know they are not real but we peruse scientific heights an new discoveries because of the Sci-Fi we see in them.
