Today new legislation, the
Emergency Unemployment Compensation Expansion Act, was re-introduced to the 112th Congress by Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09).
Much anticipated by 99ers all across America as recent tallies put the total number at somewhere around 1.5 million Americans who currently have no source of income.
The new legislation will add an additional 14 weeks of unemployment benefits to Tier 1 and will be available to both the newly unemployed and those who have already exhausted their benefits. First introduced on December 17, 2010 to the 111th Congress,
HR6556 was then Referred to the Ways and Means along with the House Transportation and Infrastructure committees where it appears to have stalled.
Three additional sponsors are listed on the 2010 bill: Rep John Conyers Jr. (MI-14), Rep. Frank Barney (MA-4), and Rep. Alcee L. Hastings (FL-23).
While passage of any unfunded legislation is doubtful in the Republican controlled House, many 99ers remain hopeful especially with recent comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke, suggesting unemployment numbers could remaining high for the next four to five years if job growth does not pick up.
