ETERNAL SECURITY: "Once saved, always saved!"

On one hand we have those who believe that if you are saved you can loose that salvation if you choose or you are bad enough... on the other hand we have those who say that you can never loose your salvation no matter what. One say if it is a free gift that one can simply give it back, while others say that the gift is a new creation that can never be reversed. In an article "Eternal Security? Wrong Focus" the author makes a good point of this sometimes "legal" debate...

"First of all, our hope for salvation rests in God's character. He has revealed Himself to be faithful, good, merciful, just, loving, and powerful. He's not looking for ways to disqualify us. Jesus went to the cross because God wants us to have eternal life with Him. This would indicate that if a person's heart meets the conditions of saving faith in Christ in any way, it is God's pleasure to grant eternal life."

This is a good point, God is looking to save us, love us, and give us a purpose and a hope... not waiting until we screw-up so He can eliminate us. Jesus didn't endure such a contradiction against Himself for us while we were His enemies... just to wipe the slate clean of us on a minor infraction. IF we were guilty of the blood of God as His enemy... what could we be guilty of as His child? And why would one look for the line in the sand to cross... is it so we can judge others as unworthy? or ourselves?

Hands down the doctrine is solid on the eternal security side... however if one thought for a moment that rattling off a prayer, without so much as respect for the one listening would save them, they should think again! The Bible says that God is not "mocked" ...if we think that we are pulling one over on Him we are only deceiving ourselves... on the other hand one can be assured the most ineloquent of simple sincere calls out to God will be written in Heaven. We are created in God's image, and it is no wonder that the very honesty we require in relationships, is the very thing the Bible states is what God is looking for in our humility.

"The logical approach.
1) If salvation is by grace through faith, then works are ruled out either as a means of salvation or as a means for its security, Eph.2:8,9.
2) If the new birth constitutes us as "sons", then our failings cannot change who our "parents" are, Jn.1:12,13.
3) The a fortiori argument: since God did the most for us when we were His enemies, how will He do less (keep us saved) as sons, Rom.5: 9,10,15,17,20."

This is great news for those who thought that God placed a whole bunch of banana peels beside the pit into Hell, thinking that God was just waiting for someone to slip in... that is not the picture at all of the pains that it took for God to secure salvation for us... or the many blessings this side of Heaven that He desires to give us as well. How sad it is when children think that their very belonging in a family is in jeopardy, or sadder yet are orphaned children, making believe that they are part of a family that they are really not.

God is clear that the Spirit of "adoption" within us calls out to Him "Father" ...and God has not made provision in His word, for those of His children to be sent back to the orphanage or to their previous parent. Now as "children" the Kingdom belongs to us in ignorance, however somewhere along the way we are called to accountability, and our part is to affirm our allegiance and gratitude to our Creator. God is a lot less judgmental than we think... there is simply no prerequisite for admission into the Kingdom of God, than the personal escort of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This doesn't mean that we get a one-time prayer "fire policy" that requires no further relationship with God... but it also doesn't mean that if we are neglectful, we could loose our place at the supper table in the end. God simply deals with His disobedient children in like fashion... and His enemies too.

Jesus said: "Whoever is not against us is for us." Mark 9:40
"Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters." Matthew 12:30

In a scene of the movie "Knight and Day" with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, the character played by Cruise makes a hand gesture, to show the lady played by Diaz the chances she will have with him or without him... as his hand is raise high he says "With Me!" and as it is lowered down, he says factually "Without me!" As this is repeated in the scene, one can draw a visual parallel of our chances with or without Christ. "With Jesus!" (hand raised) "Without Jesus!" (you get the picture).

In Christ we have been born again of a seed that can never again be corrupted or made perishable... that is hope, that is encouraging... that is bulletproof! Even I can't screw that up! If you though you couldn't "pull-off" this Christian thing, and that it was too hard for you to keep up... that is not your department, you are not the Savior! IF you think you are to sick for the likes of Heaven... you are right, that is why we have a cure in Jesus. Stop making excuses, and call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ...
He's been waiting to hear from you, again!

"Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever." 1 Peter 1:23

15 months ago: Hi TB - Been on vaca and have not been keeping up to date with the posts.

Lots of drama on the site these days I see.

Anyway, good post.

Some brothers and sisters just don't understand how depraved they are. Fact is if we could keep ourselves saved, we would not need Jesus.

We are either in the ark or in the water. Either the blood is on the doorposts or it is not. How can eternal life be temporary anyways?

We have been sealed and
given a guarantee of our redemption, a down payment by God Himself.

Ephesian 1:13-14

13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.

I believe God pays his bills.

Thanks.
15 months ago: Huey,

You must have been reading your Bible!
I love that passage in Ephesians, it nails it! IF God could "loose" us to our own devices or determination, He would loose His "deposit" guaranteeing our inheritance.. and His deposit is His Holy Spirit... He would indeed loose Himself if we could be lost. The passage in Hebrews 6 is also an awesome passage... the whole argument there is based on the futility of a question. When one looks at CONTEXT there are no difficult passages in the Bible at all.

God does pay the bills for all His kids!
And He reserves the right to discipline them...
15 months ago: So, according to your beliefs, in order to be saved is baptism the only requirement? I don't understand. If we are all saved by the grace of Jesus Christ and none of our deeds or misdeeds can deprive us of the gift of salvation offered to us by the Lord, then who or what is Hell comprised of? Or is there a Hell then?
15 months ago: SP,

To borrow a phrase from Huey... "We are either in the ark or in the water" ...like in Noah's day, it mattered little how good or bad your were, if you believed enough to get on the Ark, you were saved. In the same way... if you believe enough to ask Jesus to be your Saviour, He will. Baptism doesn't save you apart from your response to the Gospel in accepting Jesus, it is your obedience that proves your belief. The scripture says...

"Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." Mark 16:16

Belief + Baptism = Salvation... but only the lack of belief causes condemnation. The thief on who died beside Jesus on the cross believed yet wasn't baptized... and Jesus said that person would be with Jesus... yet the other thief bore his sin without belief in the Savior. All those counted "in" Christ (faith in), are counted as family... and not counted as enemies. The law is clear what our sins will get us, but if we are under the provision and payment of the one who made the rules (Christ).

The Bible says that Hell was made for the Devil and his angels, anyone rejecting Jesus forfeits the payment already made for them... and they will have to bear the punishment for their own sins. ANYONE who would rather accept the payment made for them in Jesus Christ, will have their sins not counted against them. The only exception clause is ignorance. If one does not know about Christ... they indeed may suffer consequences on Earth for sin... but spiritually they will be exempt.... their sins too are paid for by Christ.

The truth of the matter is the Gospel of Jesus has both benefits now and in eternity, so are the consequences for it's rejection. Since my decision to follow Christ, things changed for the better and consequences for the sins and laws I would have broken going down the path I was on are now not realized... also the benefits of answered prayer and forgiveness and the mere benefits of peace are now mine for ever.

Hope that helps. I get too wordy sometimes.
15 months ago: That's interesting. So am I to understand that our actions have no effect on our eternal salvation? That God wants us to be good and moral people, but there is no reason not to eat drink and be merry?
15 months ago: Yeah SP, thanks for your questions,
hope I didn't come off too defensive, sorry if I did. I still wonder how incredibly patient God is for those who don't yet understand, and for those of us who think we do... and still disobey. "Eternal" life by definition is eternal.... part time is.....
15 months ago: SP,

I get into these discussions all the time... from a licence to kill, or one slip and you're out... I think you read my post so I don't think you are playing.

IF you desire a relationship with God that will transform you life, it is in Jesus... God Himself fills our being with the Holy Spirit adopting us into His family. Though your desires change for the better over time, your nature takes a process. All of our actions effect eternity, but if we are sincere, our sin will not be held against us, rather it was punished in the flesh of Jesus Christ. In this way He deals with us as family instead of the enemies that we were in the past.

"For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ." 2 Corinthians 5:21
15 months ago: Hi SP -

Those are some straight-up, honest questions you posed. Kudos to you.

We are saved by faith through the grace of God. God's grace gives us what we do not deserve and cannot earn. His mercy keeps us from getting what we do deserve. We will never be declared righteous before our Maker by our own good deeds. We need a Savior.

Ephesians 2:8-10
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Romans 6:1-4
What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

We all have to make our own decision as to how we respond to the answers that we find.
15 months ago: OK. So we are in agreement that the atonement of Jesus Christ for the sins of the world was a necessary an crucial step to achieve salvation. But where do you stand on the topic of repentance? Do you believe that repentance is a necessary tool?
15 months ago: My take -

Repentance means being sorry for and turning the other way from our transgressions. To repent, in relation to salvation, is to change our minds in regard to Jesus Christ.

We cannot truly understand who Jesus is and receive the forgiveness He provides without having an attitude of repentance. Anything short of that is pride and God rejects the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Repentance is not a work we do to earn salvation, but it is a conscious turning from our old way to embrace the new life that has been offered to us. True repentance makes it a reality for all to see that we are no longer the Lord of our life, Jesus is.

So, yes. We need to repent to receive the salvation that Christ offers.

That does not mean that we will no longer make mistakes or sin, however the bent and direction of our lives has been forever changed. We now reject the darkness we once knowingly or unknowingly embraced. We are no longer slaves to sin, we are liberated. We are free.
15 months ago: I agree.
