ECT, a place for Terryeo to vent

Terryeo, in other threads, has stated quite clearly that he opposes the psychiatric use of electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT. Unfortunately, there has not yet been a thread dedicated to that concept, so it frequently results in off-topic posts.

This thread exists to allow terryeo to post on-topic, and fully explore the technology, if he is so inclined.

It is maintained, by this author, that thousands of pages, and millions of man-hours, have gone into researching this technology, and information is available to potential recipients.

As with any medical procedure, it is recommended that a patient does not simply trust their doctor's advice and information, and check the research for themselves before consenting to any treatment.

27 months ago: That's fascinating. I was particularly interested in noting that it had received FDA approval for depression and epilepsy, and that it shows promise for the treatment of Alzheimers.

It's amazing where the medical sciences are heading. The brain, of course, is dependent on electrical stimulation, so selective manual stimulation will eventually have very predictable effects.

There is evidence that it can help people with Parkinson, epilepsy and drug addiction. Cochlear implants can send a signal from a microphone and directly stimulate the brain to simulate hearing and electrical signals from light sensors can directly stimulate the brain so the blind can "see".
The old electroconvulsive therapy is like doing brain surgery with a chain saw. It might have accidentally helped some folk with depression, epilepsy, and Alzheimers, but smaller voltages targeted to specific areas should be more effective and selective so you don't fry the parts that are working OK.

People don't seem to be going to rantrave to rant or (less often)to rave about Scientology and parallel topics, as much as they used to. There are fewer hits on the short essays and fewer comments than there were six months ago. Terryeo, I image, has found other places on the internet to put forth his view of the cult of Scientology, as have I.

Whatever the case, here is hoping for a resurgence. I do like this site though and have used it to comment on a variety of other issues. I think the site is very valuable for hosting opinions.

I hope you consider this on topic, since the essay is not only about ECT but about Terryeo and his contributions.
