We’ve all had romantic relationships that go sour. Some people choose to use Valentine’s Day to cut ties with an old flame.
In Seattle, you can attend the annual Valentine’s Bash, where people bring tokens from failed relationships – pictures, plants, even engagement rings – and Dan Savage, local sex columnist, will destroy each memento on stage. It’s a raucous party of destruction.
Over on the East Coast, one performance artist has been working overtime to help bring closure to failed relationships. His name is Death Bear. The character is seven feet tall and covered from head to toe in dark material. Death Bear is basically a huge, evil Care Bear, and he’ll gladly cure you of your Valentine’s Day woes.
Death Bear works his magic by coming to your house and picking up your bad relationship tokens – like shirts, photos, and letters – and taking them away to “stow in his cave.” You can watch a clip of Death Bear going about his sad task on the left.
Much like the Grim Reaper, Death Bear doesn't charge a penny for his services. I think it’s interesting how Death Bear fills a needed gap in our society. According to the artist’s website, “absorbing the memories of others is a dark art... Death Bear is here to assist you in your time of tragedy." Sure, his outfit is silly, but don’t we all need a Death Bear at some point in our life?
