Compassion In The Animal Kingdom, It Is Not Unique To Humans

Some of the most compassionate deeds are not done by Christians trying to get into heaven or by Liberals proving that social programs work. In fact compassion which is widely recognized as a human trait might very well be an instinct that is not exclusive to humanity at all. Animals of different species practice compassion in manners that don't seem consistent with their prime need to survive. I have put together a few You Tube video's I found that demonstrate just that. In one of the video's an orangutan in a zoo enclosure spends a good ten minutes carefully trying to coax a baby bird out of the water where it could have drowned and onto the safety of a leaf he guided with precision. The animal did not distract from its mission of mercy until it had pulled the helpless creature from the water and was sure that it was still alive.

In another video a dog risks getting hit on a busy highway to rescue another dog that had gotten hit. But lest you might think that dogs spend a lot of time with humans and so this type of behavior is natural and orangutans are peaceful mostly herbivorous creatures so this would not surprise you I also included a video of a carnivores predatory big cat who despite her inability to nurse the calf (that is right, calf) in her care, she protects it for three weeks from her hungry on looking pride. There is no explanation why she should risk her life to save the life of what in another instance might have been her prey. But she did and it does happen. To me at least it is encouraging that creatures who show no ulterior motives can teach humanity benevolence in its purest form. Thanks for reading. Please watch the other video examples below.

If humans are deprived of education and human contact they revert and become closer to the animals. Some other animals can be taught and get closer to humans. Koko the gorilla was able to communicate with over a thousand words of American Sign language and could understand and comprehend two thousand words of spoken English. Her intelligence was equivalent to a six year old human, and she demonstrated compassion with a kitten she adopted she named Ball. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koko_%28gor...%29

You are absolutely right. I sometimes think about Koko's acquired skills and how it must have affected the view of he captive world. I wonder if she felt confined or isolated. I wonder if she had conflicts of identity or if she thought of herself in a broader animal context watching the different species that she interacted with as part of a common collective. There must be a deeper explanation as to why she would love ball unconditionally. It is well worth exploring.

Even though we are not evolved animals we still can learn much from them.

Traits like loyalty, compassion and courage sometimes get lost in the shuffle of life because we never learn or sometimes forget why we were put here in the first place.

Thanks for the links too!

For three days, what I assumed to be it's mate would set close by, only leaving for short periods to catch a bug or worm, which it would place on the concrete by the dead bird. The third night it got really cold, and I awoke the next morning to find both birds dead, right next to each other.

I missed that post, so tragic and simultaneously poignant. That could be someones grandparents story. Thanks for sharing.
