Ok, let's lighten things up a bit.

Hiking season is soon upon us here in central New York, and I need a new backpack. My old one is fine, in great shape. I bought it at Wal mart, paid almost nothing for it, and have been happy with it. It is great for an overnight or day trip. But I am ready for something a little bigger and a little more rugged.

Any suggestions? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance.

Peace,
Amishking.

23 months ago: I came across someone on the trail last year that had a backpack travois. The backpack had a single lightweight wheel that could be lowered and then the pack and contents would be half supported by the wheel and the rest on a harness around your hips. Yet you can also carry it like a regular back where it gets too rough. Forgot the brand but it looked and seemed to work pretty slick. I thought it would work great for heavy loads and maybe for deer hunting to bring back the meat.

Another question off the subject, but why do you see abandoned backpacks along the trail. I have been doing a lot of day trips here in San Diego and I found three day packs and assorted clothes by upper Otay lake. I figured someone broke into a car and lifted them and then abandoned them after taking anything of value.
Then I did a strenuous climb up to a nearby peak and found a dozen more. Why would anyone carry a stolen backpack several miles and 800 ft. up a mountain to abandon it?

Al, you should collect those packs, and give them to unfortunate homeless backpackers...or sell them.

Peace.

They make a line of outdoor packs as well as traditional school style.

Get a pack you wear, not one you carry.

What do they care, they've already make the hike and taken their photos so they could care less if they trash the trail or scenic sight.

The motto "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints" is lost on the majority of those who can afford to buy and throw away at will. For me, that pack would represent a few days groceries and any contents even more so I'd have to be in pretty bad shape to abandon it and since it is more than a footprint, probably I'd be dead.

Good luck on your search, a good backpack will not be cheap and you won't find it at WalMart either.
