Hi Everyone,

I am looking for some advice from you guys.

I am starting a little website and i need some help with Search Engine Optimization and web design.

If you have any experience in this and could offer an argumentative old git some advice i will greatfully recieve it.

I am going to start an advertising campaign with google on certain keywords as when the sites built i think it will take off and be a nice little community.

My knowledge on this subject is quite minimal and if anyone knows anyway of getting the company and websites i have started listed on all the major search engines i would love to know.

I have purchased a handfull of domain names and i am going to advertise the main site on all the rest.

Now i know i may have upset one or two of you guys but i did certain things to get a reaction and have a good old ding dong.

If you can help in anyway or point me towards reputable companies that can help i will be delighted.

So if you have any experience in anything web based and think you can help or offer advice it will be greatfully recieved.

This could be the start of something pretty cool but i want to save as many pennies as i can to start with.

I have spoken to a few health trusts in england about the ideas i have and they seemed to like them and may even contribute a little.

Thanks for reading.

My wife and I owned and maintained a digital publishing company from 2002
to 2007. With everything else we had going on we just became overwhelmed
trying to keep the website updated with the current technology. We had to
give something up and the publishing company ended up being it.

The wife took classes and became a web master and built our web site. I
did some of the maintenance and site optimization and handled the books and
authors end of it. I've tried on occasion to get the wife to build a site
for a friend or associate but she says she has forgotten all of it. I just
think she got a bit burned out on the whole thing.

It doesn't sound as if your site will require the amount of maintenance as
ours did. We had to incorporate site searches etc and it seemed once we
would get something built into the system another better one would come along and make ours look outdated. Of course it seems to me now that things have leveled off but
that may just be because I am not in the biz anymore.

Since things in the web world have likely changed a lot since 2007 I will
try to stay with the basics and hopefully not steer you wrong on anything.

SEO works different ways with different search engines. Goggles' spyders read or
did read the keyword relation on the home page first and keyword saturation of
the related subject on you home page help create a ranking status. Also the links back from your site to sites which were related to the subject of your site contrite to ranking.

Secondary pages counted in a similar manner but did not hold the same
importance as the home page. Some web masters would saturate their homepage with keywords which were invisible to the visitor as they were blended in with the background. Google caught on to this however and if caught the sites are banded from Google.

There are some SEO services out their which say they submit your site to all the search engines. The reality of the situation is that the search engines spyder bots should find your site with in a month or so as it routinely crawls through the web picking up new sites. If you wanted to use these services I would be sure to get your optimization down first and then find a reasonably priced one as the most I could see them doing is to get your site picked up a little sooner regardless of what they claim.

Since different search engines will look for different angles to help the web surfer find what they are looking for then you may want to look into the large search engines criteria. Or as we did just try to optimize for Google and figure the others will pick it up along the way. Hope this helps some.

Thanks very much for spending a little time pointing me in the right direction i really apreciate it.
I have started to send the domain names out to search engines and now i need to learn about something called meta tags.
Once i have the meta tags sorted out and the site is built then i will pay a company(hopefully a small fee) to make sure it gets seen.
Does it help if you link to sites like twitter, linkd in,facebook etc?.
As this is a new business i am going to add it to alot of business pages aswell and try and do links with them.
Thanks again for your help

What you want to avoid is linking to sites that have problems or are only there as a "link" generation site. Google has caught on to these and will deduct points for this. The Meta tags are to my knowledge the words which are key to what your site is about i.e. a keyword or Meta tag for a auto part site may be GM or Ford or Car. The tricky thing is that to many Meta tags will likely confuse the spyders and you will be spread out to much too actually get a good ranking in any certain subject. Once you decide on ten or less Meta tags you want to saturate your home page with them. This can also be a bit tricky as you have to place them on your home page and still make everything sound good. This is why you see on some pages stuff like "we sell widgets and anything to do with widgets. If you are looking for widgets then we have widgets". Of course "widgets" is a Meta tag and they want to get it on the home page as much as possible.
11 months ago: Oh and I should mention traffic also plays a factor though I am not sure to what degree. This is a bit of the chicken and egg situation being that it is difficult to get traffic to your site if you have a low ranking and people can't find your site but how can you get a higher ranking if you need traffic to get a higher ranking.

You do have the option of purchasing traffic. If you did this I would suggest getting the cheapest you can find as to my understanding most all of this purchased traffic comes from overseas or is generated by computer software, meaning regardless of what the traffic sellers say it is doubtful you will get any sales from this traffic. I would also use a PayPal or alternate bank account just to be on the safe side as I suspect the majority of these traffic sellers are from overseas. But it is an option to consider.
11 months ago: I will have to look into that as i never thought about purchasing traffic.
I am speaking to a designer tomorrow so it should be all systems go hopefully.
Thanks for your help.
