And Yet Another War

I am sure glad that John Mc Cain is not our president now.

As it is we are now in three wars. With McCain in there, we wouldn't be pulling out of Iraq, we wouldn't be pulling out of Afghanistan in a few years, we would have bombed Iran, invaded Pakistan, and now in Lybia we wouldn't have an international consortium backed by a UN resolution and support of the Arab League, we would have gone in gun's blazing. Could we handle 5 or 6 wars now? Could we afford it?

I have been critical of Obama for not being enough of a fighter when it comes to fighting for the common people, but when it comes to wars, I am glad that it is No Drama Obama that is in charge.

We can no longer afford to be the cops of the world and the Arab world is leery of our imperialism. Being cowboys would have resulted in everyone in the Arab world being united against the U.S. instead of fighting for their freedom now.

Your justification of Obama peddling our military meddling is to say that McCain would have had us in more wars? We don't have a window to see what would have happened in alternate realities.

It's dragging the bottom of the barrel when you have to defend your fearless leader by saying, "Yep, Obama sucks, but hey, it could be worse!"

Most experts in the field agree that Obama is handling this very difficult balancing act in just the right way.

He was able to get Russia and China to abstain from the security council vote. We are trying to protect the people of Lybia from a cruel tyrant without inflaming the volatile Arabs.

If we had gone in there and acted unilaterally weeks ago as McCain suggested the Arabs would hate us and think we had imperial aims again. As it is the rebels are thanking us.

14 months ago: >>>TRIPOLI: Western forces pounded Libya's air defences and patrolled its skies yesterday, but their day-old intervention hit a serious diplomatic setback as the Arab League chief condemned the "bombardment of civilians".....

Arab League chief Amr Moussa called for an emergency meeting of the group of 22 states to discuss Libya. He requested a report into the bombardment which he said had "led to the deaths and injuries of many Libyan civilians".

"What is happening in Libya differs from the aim of imposing a no-fly zone, and what we want is the protection of civilians and not the bombardment of more civilians," Moussa was quoted as saying.<<<

14 months ago: Germany, Brazil, Russia, India and China all refrained from voting on what Russia called "the hastily passed UN Security Council resolution 1973."

Again I ask, why would Obama instruct China and Russia to refrain from voting, when he himself voted in favor of the bombing of civilians?

14 months ago: I do hate war Red because 90% of the casualties of most wars are the innocent civilians.

But I also hate genocide and tyrants slaughtering innocent civilians. Often the only way that can be stopped is by force.

On the other hand I don't think the US should be the cops of the world so if any actions are to be taken it should be an international effort led by the UN and not unilateral action by the US.

Both China and Russia had previously voiced opposition to the no fly zone and was expected to veto the plan in the security council so their abstaining was surprising and should be seen as a victory for Obama's (and/or Hillary's) diplomatic skills.

When just one or two Western Nations are in control Gadhafi's propaganda that it is a western crusade may be believable to some but it is much harder to say that when it is the UN with Arab League support. This results in Gadhafi's loosing credibility and support and will hasten his demise.
Two new developments are good news. NATO has agreed to be in control of the international no fly zone so the US can not be blamed and can fade into the background. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar...

So why aren't we also aiding the rebels in Yemin? Probably because the President Ali Abdullah Saleh is an ally of the US in it's fight against terrorism. Still he is a tyrant and needs to go, so it is good that he promises to hit the road soon. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/20...
