We all want to be healthy and lose weight. But few of us want to sweat.
Sadly, very few people attempt the tried-and-true “cut calories and exercise more” method. Instead, we try all-carb diets, or no-carb diets, or other silly fad diets like the lemon juice detox. (Warning: it can give you diarrhea!)
New numbers from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) were released this week, and the news isn’t great: Americans are fat – and we’re getting fatter. Simply put, 30 percent of Americans adults are obese, and more than 60 percent are overweight. (The CDC defines “obese” as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, and “overweight” as a BMI of at least 25.)
The CDC data includes the facts that:
- Some 17 percent of children are obese.
- There are more obese women (36 percent) than men (32 percent).
- A higher percentage of blacks and Hispanics (44 and 38 percent, respectively) are obese, as compared to 32 percent of whites.
So what does this mean for us as a nation? Call me crazy, but I think that about two-thirds of the people who read this need to start a new diet. Also, be an adult: fast food should be a treat, not a daily occurrence.
If you’re looking for a new way to lose weight, start by limiting your portion sizes and taking some short walks. Before you know it, you’ll be jogging around your neighborhood and bragging about your weight loss, just like Jared from Subway used to do.
Also, do a little reading about high-fructose corn syrup – it’s in a lot of foods, and it’s making you fat. There’s a link on the left. If you give up soda pop, you’ll start losing weight almost immediately. It's true.
