I am seriously excited and therefore raving about the recent announcement made by Amazon and their entry into the tablet business with its new Fire. My wife has had the Amazon Kindle for about six months and loves it as an eReader; however, I've been in the market for something a little more but didn't want to spend the money on an Apple iPad.
To me, the Kindle Fire seems to be Amazon's answer to the Barnes and Noble Nook Color as they both have similar features as well as a common price point. However, with some added functions many experts are really looking at the Fire as a cheaper alternative to the iPad. But am I going to be happy with fewer functions on the Fire?
Amazon is selling the Fire for $199 where the Apple iPad is about $300 more. The Fire comes with a 7-inch screen and the iPad has a 10-inch screen. The Fire with its limited onboard memory doesn't have the business apps that the iPad offers. The Fire has no camera or microphone which means if you are into creating music, art, managing businesses, or editing photos, the Fire is not the tablet for them.
However, do I really need all that in a tablet? I've got a couple of desktop computers as well as a couple of laptops to work with for writing articles. The Amazon Fire seems to me to be a small tablet that would let me read eBooks, watch movies, and cruise the internet looking for anything else. Maybe saving $300 and doing without all the other functions is the way to go? I do know that the Amazon Fire looks to be the best Android based tablet out there now and along with the Amazon internet connections there are some great choices in books and movies.
My guess is that when most people look at both they are going to realize that they can either make a $199 mistake or a $499 mistake? With Amazon pushing for more developers to help get more apps to the Android OS, we may see in the future a much more competitive tablet. For now, I love what Amazon has brought to the table and I'm looking forward to some vast improvements very soon.
