For the last six weeks, I have been cross posting most of my articles from Magdeburgerjoe.com and Rudistettner.com on a great site. Rantrave.com is a web site where readers are invited to post on any subject at all that interests them. There are minimal rules against porn, spamming and slander. They are common sense rules. There are also unwritten rules that come from an evolving sense of community.

It is generally appreciated if one comments on articles that others have posted. It is expected that there be give and take in the rantrave community. Additionally, varying topics is a good idea. People like a mix of subject matter.

The level of civility is very high among the regulars. There are some people with whom I frequently disagree. We are forthright and forthcoming but unfailingly civil.

It is hard to find any real "party liners." Most of the regulars a mix of liberal and conservative.
One guy is very vocal about his vegetarian beliefs. I always associated this with a leftist orientation. He definately runs towards conservatism on many issues. Another guy is so far left that I almost never agree with him. Despite this, I found his comments on Columbine High school very insightful. He had actually attended Columbine and knew of its culture and social life.

I have written about Eritrea and Croatia and received comments voicing opinions seldom found in the news. I have exchanged comments with people that I would not be likely to meet otherwise. even when I agree to disagree, the facts that are brought to support an argument remain with me and contribute to my political and philosophical evolution.

Visualising an audience has always been a powerful creative stimulant for me. The Rantrave.com regulars add layers of nuance and variety to this process that I never would have thought to be possible. When you imagine who you are writing for, it can give your writing a completely different tone.

Aside from the added readership, writing with such a varied audience in mind has been a powerful creative stimulant. I hope the readers who come to my sites will also check out rantrave.com. The site has variety and a sense of community. when you find a writer who interests you, I strongly recommend clicking on his or her name and checking out other articles. Rantrave.com is an exciting interactive experience. Its founder, Alex Layton has achieved a rare blend of civility and spirited exchange of ideas on the site. I see well deserved success in the future for Rantrave.com. It is one of the best examples of what the internet can make possible.

I hated the internet until I found rantrave.

I will start checking out your sites also.

Thanks.

33 months ago: Wow, love the critique!

I know who the vegetarian is, and the liberal who went to columbine.

It's amazing how much you can learn just from your peers. If we were all locked in a room somewhere, i'll bet we'd be able to figure out who's who pretty quickly.

As for the unspoken code of conduct, you are correct.

Neat post, thanks!

33 months ago: Man, thanks so much! What a flattering post!

I need to correct you on one point, though. I am not the founder. I am the website administrator. The founder is a great guy named Mike. When he launched the site, I was working with him on another project and inherited the title and responsibility. A definite case of being in the right place at the right time.

Regardless, we are thrilled with the response it's generated and are pleased that it has been a positive experience for so many people.

Thank you again, Rudi, and to all who contribute.

I like how people who are so far on the right though, see we people in the middle as being on the left. Poor Arlen Specter just had to face facts. I guess I'm not that fond of the current set of political labels we serve up. I'm certainly not in favor of the bail outs or spending hundreds of millions to bail out spoiled brats, meanwhile I support equality and fair treatment for all law-abiding citizens. So, you draw your own conclusions. What I do appreciate about your posts is that you do intensive research. It makes sense if you are writing for other sites that you do this and have found willing audiences therein. I will try to read your posts, but sometimes they are simply too old school, USA-centric for my taste.

33 months ago: Columbine High and a proclaimed independnt to boot.
Not a Leftist by any stretch of his imagination.
Too funny.

She reminded them that they used to the party of honesty, integrity, and fiscal responsibility. Not sure what she thinks the Democrats were and/or are the party of. Anyway, I think she's right on the money, and as much as the conservatives on this site hate her guts, she's not the Speaker of the House, third in line for the Presidency because she's stupid. I think she knows that good debate is the source of good government in our nation. She's been in the House long enough to know that. She's also seen the tides turn up and down. I also think that the parties have both been struggling with identity issues, and Obama doesn't help clarify some aspects of this dilemma because he holds views on how to accomplish things that don't really fit with either party line.

33 months ago: Last night, I watched one of my all-time favorite television shows, "Law & Order". The episode was about a bunch of angry white kids catching, branding on the face with a hot peso, and then killing people they perceived to be illegal immigrants. And I watched this 'ripped from the headlines' episode wondering when the people in our society who stir up the hate will be held accountable.

33 months ago: Rudi, I'm sorry but if people who start the hate get hated, isn't that just 'turnabout is fair play'. It's like a bully telling the principal, "But he hit me back, and you said fighting was wrong."

33 months ago: Coloranter how am I a hater. Have you not made a presumption of guilt by virtue of race? You are turning skin colour into a uniform. Your assumptions are highly prejudicial, and you seem to be totally unaware of it. You ought to reexamine your thinking
33 months ago: Rudi, well said. I thought we are all of the same race.

It is just a matter of shades.

Seems like some have tunnel vision.

and... I think my statement was clear enough.

Just so you get it in straight print.

Your a Leftist. Try to promote yourself however you want.
We are not that stupid. Did that clarify it for you?

33 months ago: Sorry ya'll

Get ready for 6 to 12 more pages of BORING.

Is it possible to cut to the chase?

In reality, if political discourse were a highway with a left lane and a right lane, I would probably be pulled over, and given a breathalyser test for switching lanes erratically without signalling.
By the way,my next posting will with G-d's help be an article dedicated to Coloranter and Siempre Solo on the subject of prejudice.

33 months ago: You are right on target Siempre. I sometimes slow an discussion down to instant replay and highlight a term or assumption. It is sometimes more necessary in a forum where facial expressions are absent. I am getting a picture of the beliefs of those with whom I correspond. But I like to define terms and challenge assumptions. On a totally unrelated subject, my recent posting of an Iranian video might interest you. It makes a profound point. The symbolism in it could make for several posts. What is most interesting about it is that the group is sanctioned by the Iranian government yet filmed the video in Germany showing non Muslim westerners. It deals with contagious acts of kindness achieving critical mass. Something many of different faiths believe in.
