State Of The Union Address

Republicans are sweating bullets today. A CBS poll indicated that 91% of the viewers who watched the State of the Union speech approved of Obama's policy proposals. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-2...

So what are these policies?
1. Restore Manufacturing: Obama's policies brought GM back to the #1 spot in the world. Take away incentives for outsourcing, encourage insourcing. Take away Oil subsidies and give that money to manufacturers who add jobs and expand their factories. A tax cut for manufacturers who help communities. Temporary $20 billion tax credit for clean energy manufacturing. $50 billion in tax relief for plant expansions. http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-offi...
2. Open new international markets for American products.
3. The Trade Enforcement Unit will investigate unfair trading practices in China.
4. Educate and train more American citizens in a trade.
5. Reward the nation's best teachers and extend the tuition tax credit for college students.
6. Tackle illegal immigration.
7. Extend tax breaks to help small businesses grow.
8. Continue providing grants to medicinal and technological research projects.
9. Spur energy innovation and natural gas with incentives like clean energy standards and elimination of energy waste.
10. Pump money into local infrastructure.
11. Revitalize Housing by letting Americans refinance at historically low rates with savings of up to $3,000 a year.
12. Start a Financial Crimes Unit to investigate the crimes that caused the economic meltdown and crack down on large-scale fraud and protect investments so 2008 will never happen again.
13. Everyone must pay their fair share, specifically millionaires who should be willing to abide by the Buffett Rule. He proposed a 30% minimum tax on millionaires and said if you make under $250,000 (98% of the country) your taxes won't go up.
14. Crack down on insider trading in Congress.
15. Consolidate the bureaucracy so the government is leaner, quicker and more efficient in making changes.
16. Prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. (27 nations ban Iranian oil)
17. Create jobs for veterans.
18. Extend Payroll tax deduction.

There was of course many additional points. Obama would like to restore the American Dream by restoring fairness, and despite the obstructionism, would like to work in a bipartisan manner.

None of of The President's plans are at all radical or controversial. Many of these policies are centrist and many were even first proposed by Republicans. So why are they so dead set against these proposals?

Simply because Pres. Obama is the one proposing them.

The Republicans don't care if the President's policies are good for the country. They don't care if their proposals are bad for the country. Their only goal is to beat Obama.

Here is a neat summary of the speech: http://thestir.cafemom.com/in_the_news/1...

So what are the Republican plans to revive the economy? They all break down to, more tax cuts to the rich, and less regulation, so corporations can pollute more. Mitt Romney (Mister 1%) is only paying 14% on $20 million per year, and he is hiding at least $32 million in Swiss accounts and in the Cayman Islands. Gingrich would be even worse. He would eliminate Capital Gains so Romney would pay no taxes at all.

Is there any wonder why 91% of Americans agree with Obama? Is there any doubt why the Republicans are starting to panic?

27 days ago: Just a quick little fact check on #1: President Obama had very, very little to do with this. The bailout process and legislation was written and implemented by President Bush.

Also, economically speaking, restoring manufacturing is a good thing to do, and would provide jobs for a lot of the unemployed people in America. That said, it is not actually going to help America compete world wide and is also counter-intuitive to some of President Obama's other policy goals. By this I mean that it makes little sense to push an agenda focused on increasing college education and high tech/high education jobs while also pushing low end/low education jobs. While both are important, manufacturing is very difficult in the United States, mostly because we just aren't good at it. It's far to expensive (thanks mostly to the labor unions unfair practices of inflating wages to unreasonable levels) and we are not very efficient. China is far better suited to manufacturing as they have lower costs and MUCH higher efficiency. The focus of American job creation should continue to be in service industries, specialty high tech manufacturing and financial services (as scary as that may be).

The bigger issue is that President Obama is likely not going to get ANY of these things done because of the do-nothing Congress. He can kick them while they are down all he wants, but they are not going to change. Executive Orders can only do so much (even if he tried to match the 288 issued by Bush I doubt he could get much done).
27 days ago: I guess that means, Al, that you have another "consensus", huh?

Give me a break.
27 days ago: "Fairness" is "Marxism".

That's all you guys are is Marxists.

No thank you.

I'll take freedom and liberty instead.

27 days ago: The new brand of conservative loves to play around with BUZZWORDS because BUZZWORDS can mean almost anything to anybody. It frees him from the obligation of having to explain himself once he leaves office of course after plunging the whole nation into a deeper $#!+ hole than JR Bush had sunk it. So he can tout LIBERTY and bash SOCIAL policies all he wants but remember that there is LIBERTY in ANARCHY but no SOCIETY wants ANARCHY because to be a SOCIETY you have to be SOCIAL!

DJ is about to morph into a new identity.

26 days ago: Perfect is right that Bush initiated the initial $17.4 billion loan but Obama implemented it, while 74% of the public and Romney said that they should let GM go down the tubes.

The point is that the president has a good plan for fixing the economy. In fact he has had several good plans for years, but as Perfect said the obstructionists have kept him from implementing them so the economy has taken much longer to recover.

The point is that the disloyal opposition has No plans to get the economy going again. They revert to the same old plans that Bush destroyed the economy with. Their mantra is that if the government gets out the free market will help everyone, but the free market has never worked without the aid and the regulation of government.

Right wingnuts like Red and TCG know that their guys have no plans or answers to our numerous problems, so they just revert to name calling and derision.

The Free market will do nothing to help the 10 million chronically unemployed. They need more education and training and the government is the only way to do that. Even better would be if the government helped the chronically unemployed directly by hiring them in programs like the WPA or CCC.

There is no freedom or liberty without the economic independence to support your family. That is why when the slaves were freed they were promised 40 acres and a mule - so they could support their families.

I agree that we will never take over all of our old manufacturing because the Chinese and other third world countries are willing to work for pennies. But now even the Chinese are unionizing and demanding safe working conditions, less pollution and higher wages. so the differences are getting smaller while shipping costs are going up. http://www.fool.com/investing/general/20...

I don't think we should concentrate on service jobs, we should concentrate on educating kids in the STEMS, (Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics) because we need to replace the high paying manufacturing jobs with high paying research, development, and innovative jobs, as we did in Silicon Valley.

I don't think the answer is to get rid of unions and bring the wages of everyone down like they are in China. I think the answer is to have more unions and bring everyone's wages back up again. We can't leed the world in manufacturing, but we can in innovation, if we are willing to make the investments.

~True, kinda...saying "Ok let's let this plan go into action" is hardly an accomplishment for Obama...He has had some good ideas, but taking credit for saving American auto manufacturing is an absurd claim. I was one of the people who said we should have let GM die in a fire. GM SUCKS...they did then and they still do now. Ford and Chrysler are MILES ahead of GM when it comes to quality, comfort, efficiency and durability. (I own a Chrysler and a Toyota).

To say that the far right has no plan is not necessarily true...it's just that they are scared to death of change (and most of them are rich).

The Free Market would actually help if it was allowed to. But Labor Unions have destroyed any chance of that happening. By unfairly jacking wage rates through the ceiling for low skill work they have destroyed the economy. While it is true that wages would likely go down to a more reasonable level for Johnny McUnion to drill holes in sheet metal (he doesn't deserve nor is he worth $35/hr) wages for skilled positions and for workers who are actually good at their job would not decrease much. If you are curious as to why manufacturing jobs are going out of America to MANY other countries it is because wages represent the skill level (most union workers deserve and are worth about 12-15/hr). The best part is when everyone, both left and right, blames companies for leaving America...well...it makes perfect sense....if you can pay somebody in Mexico a few dollars an hour (or even 10-15) to do the same work (probably more efficiently than lazy American Union workers) for 25 dollars less per hour...that is a decision a rock could make. Union's are a plague on this country. Getting rid of them would not in any way bring wages down to Chinese levels, we have a minimum wage in America.

Further, our education system SUCKS. We will never compete in Math, Science or Engineering because we handicap our teachers. America's teaching and education philosophy is: Just get them to pass a test...The education system needs a MAJOR overhaul.

GM posted those numbers using totals that are manufatured and sold only in China.

righty tighty refty russcie....

the "cronicically" unemployed Al? is that like a cronic illness that you brought upon yourself?

Yeah, right. the governement is the answer.

Tell you what Mr. Refty Russcie.

I'll agree to re-educate the cronically unemployed when you agree to match it dollar for dollar to advanced education for the employed.

Fair is fair Al. It would be the ones working that will get to pay the bill to re-educated those cronics.

25 days ago: The chronically unemployable are the young poor kids in the ghetto who have up to 70% unemployment. They are the housewives who finally ran away from their abusive husbands but they can only put Housewife on their resume. They are the Vets coming back from war who have lots of skills but also PTSD and drug dependence because of injuries. They are the young kids who drop out of high school. None of these folk would be hired by anyone because there are four times as many trained and highly educated people competing for the same job openings. It is an employers market and they will only hire the best and brightest and they want the latest skills and are leery of anyone who has been out of work more than a month because the technology and software is changing so quickly. That is why they say the unemployed need not apply.

The government is the only answer when the free market has written all of these people off as hopeless. We need to expand programs like Job Corps to train, educate and give job skills and experience. Jan Schakowsky has a bill in Congress like this that will provide 2.2 million jobs. http://schakowsky.house.gov/index.php?op...

I would be all in favor of continuing education throughout life for everyone. I think education should be a basic right like clean air and water and health care.

That may soon be possible. There are more and more on line colleges so people who are working can go to school on their own schedule. http://www.usnews.com/education/online-e...

Perfect GM wouldn't be doing so well if Obama hadn't required them to switch their emphasis from gas guzzlers to more economical models.

Labor unions created the middle class and the decline of the middle class is tied inextricably to the decline in the unions. The unions are not responsible for the loss of jobs nor are they responsible for the sad state of the education system. They have been flexible and reduced their own wages and benefits to preserve jobs and have helped maintain high educational standards. http://www.decisionsonevidence.com/2011/...

25 days ago: GM still cannot compete with FORD...Ford didn't take a Government Bailout...Ford Started making fuel efficient cars well before all this happened. This is America. GM Spent the better part of a decade making POS vehicles...Ford, Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, Kia, Acura, BMW, Audi, Mazda, etc were all making vehicles that were millions of times better than GM. That is called a failing company...they should have GONE OUT OF BUSINESS...that's what happens when your company is total crap and you cannot compete...they should not have been given a get out of jail free card because they suck. AND their new vehicles STILL SUCK. They are poorly designed, uncomfortable, ride like crap, get bad mileage still....GM (with the exception of Cadillac) needs to go out of business.
25 days ago: I always thought that statement F(ound) O(n) R(oad) D(ead) was funny. I have 2 sitting in my driveway. One is 15+ years old and can slam most vehicles on the road today (except for the eye candy). I don't really care if it only gets 22+ mpg. It is my work horse. I'll give it all of the grain it needs.
25 days ago: Hey Perfect? Did Al agree to fund 50% of all monies to advance education of working folk?
25 days ago: Want to have a good laugh Perfect? Ask Al what he drives....

Does Astro(turf) Van ring a bell. Do they still make those?

What a total GM POS. Then again, I'm sure he is proud of his recycling of unwanted products.

Still no response from any of you guys about how the Republicans and the free market plans to get jobs for the 6 million long term unemployed that need some help. You folk just want to discard them.

23 days ago: I hate to break it to you...but a Dodge Caravan is not a GM product.

There are jobs out there...people prefer getting paid to watch Price is Right and Judge Judy than work in jobs they "don't like". President Obama's plan to change the Unemployment system from a maze of endless paperwork and free money into a re-employment system is the right path to be on...better follow up and less laziness would go a long way.
23 days ago: I liked the 30 MPG part as my wife drives a 3 year old Caravan with all of the newer emmissions/computers/MPG requirements and it has never even sniffed 30 MPG. Maybe it is because she does not have a GM Caravan.

23 days ago: Well, that GM-Dodge Caravan is quite the elusive species. It's the Unicorn of MiniVans.

As I said I own a Chrysler (Pacifica). Not the best on gas but it does a good job in the snow. Something that cannot be said of my Toyota Celica (but this one does get 35mpg).

GM should be out of business...period. They sucked at making cars for 20 years. Ford and Chrysler and every Japanese and Korean company destroyed them in the last 5 years. They should be out of business. Where was the bail out for the corner drug stores that were buried alive by Walgreens and CVS. How about the local TruValue hardware stores that were smashed by Home Depot and Lowes. Wal-Mart puts hundreds if not thousands of Mom&Pop stores out of business every year. Why not stand up for them instead of a company worth billions that ignored its customers and refused to make any changes for the better part of 2 decades???? To this day it has not changed. Go sit in a Chevy Tahoe and then sit in a Toyota Sequoia...Go sit in a Chevy Equinox and then a Chrysler Pacifica. GMC Sierra vs. Nissan Titan or Ford F series. Try a Cadillac vs Acura or Lincoln or Lexus...GM Products are strictly worse than every one of their competitors on all fronts for all vehicles. That company is garbage and should have been out of business 5 years ago
22 days ago: What can I say? GM is the product of China. That is the market they build to and emulate.
