Imaging making a mistake that over shadowed every good thing you had ever done in your life. A small group of people on Facebook have decided it is time for Major League Baseball to forgive the greatest batter in the history of the game. The group has vowed to get 1,000,000 to join their group and sign their petition to MLB to reinstate Pete Rose and allow him the deserved honor of being inducted in to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Pete Rose aka "Charlie Hustle" has more hits than any player in the history of major league baseball along with around 15 other records that will likely never be broken. As many are aware after his 26 years of playing the game with more hustle, effort and success than anyone else, he went on to manage the Cincinnati Reds. He later admitted to betting on major league baseball, while he was a manager, but NEVER against his team.
There is no defending the fact that Pete Rose bet on baseball, but after 20 years of being banned from the game he loves, hasn't he paid for his "crime".
Pete Rose will be turning 69 this coming April, the time has come to induct him in to the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a player.
Please look to the link on the left to join the Facebook group 1,000,000 for Pete Rose to be inducted in to the MLB Hall of Fame. It is a time for forgiveness, please join us in helping Pete Rose take his rightful place in MLB history.

29 months ago: Why? Did he not understand the rules? Nice role model for your kids, but not mine. Let him keep selling pencils.

29 months ago: A Lifetime sentence?? Who did he murder? Let's hope you NEVER make a mistake.
29 months ago: Why should he get bonus time?
This would only allow others to follow in his footsteps.

"In August 1989, three years after he retired as an active player, Rose agreed to permanent ineligibility from baseball amidst accusations that he gambled on baseball games while playing for and managing the Reds, including claims that he bet on his own team"

Permanent ineligibility from baseball means what?

29 months ago: His eligibility for the Hall of Fame ended in 2006 and while we can legitimately question whether or not the punishment fit the crime, I recall Rose regularly proclaiming his innocence for some 15 years, and suddenly he fesses up when it's time to sell the autobiography and just before his eligibility for the HOF was ending.

Even then, he continued to lie and said he bet on every game, but in fact didn't bet when they were facing strong opponents. Pete's his own worst enemy; he lied and used his fans for years on end, and went to war with the baseball commissioners and lost. If he had simply owned it back when it mattered, he be in the HOF today.

Maybe Pete Rose aka "Charlie the Hustler" will get a special dispensation for HOF consideration from a future Commissioner but I imagine that won't happen until he's passed away.
29 months ago: It took him 20 years to apologize to fans like me who grew up watching and idolizing this man called "Charlie Hustle" and in a small boys heart he broke it as he did for millions of young boys.

I think if he had apologized and admitted it before he finally got a book deal I might have considered accepting the flaky apology had it come 20 years ago.
29 months ago: It doesn't matter that he never bet AGAINST the Reds. Betting on them to win is just as bad. It changes the way you manage the game, when you have money riding on it. Say someone is managing a team with the elite closer in baseball. The manager bets $10,000 on his team to win. With a 4-run lead, he brings his closer in to pitch the 8th and 9th innings.

Team wins, and manager wins. But he wasted the elite closer in a non-save situation, leaving him unavailable the next night, when he might need him for real...

Also, betting patterns signal to bookies to bet on the Reds to lose, when Rose does not bet on them to win.

He knew the rules, he broke them, he agreed to the penalty. Case closed. No Rose in Baseball, and no Rose in the HOF.
29 months ago: If the era of Shoeless Joe Jackson ain't getting in then why should an obvious better/cheater?

29 months ago: Your a very angry unforgiving group. WOW!!
Lighten up and enjoy life. People make bad
decisions but at some point shouldn't you give someone
a break?
I know this crowd on here... so here it goes...
Wouldn't Jesus give him another chance? LOL
29 months ago: Howard, we are not a very angry unforgiving group.
Don't play that forgiveness forever ploy on us.

Our forgiveness of a past sin/discretion has no bearing on whether or not "Charlie Hustle" has paid a price for his bad judgement. The fact that the "Charlie Hustle" didn't own his mistakes early on when given the opportunity does have a bearing on our opinion.

He can now live the fate he has chosen.

Governor Huckabee tried to be like Jesus when he pardoned Maurice Clemmons and that didn't work out so well. As a rational agnostic, I'll still see Pete for what he is - a lying hustler who played his loyal fans for fools.

I figure Pete's chances of ever getting into the HOF are about the same as Tiger Woods becoming monogamous.
29 months ago: Mark, do we really need to start another one?

29 months ago: TCG, since we're in agreement on Pete Rose, what's there to start? If you didn't like my Gov Huckabee analogy, it was discussed at:

http://www.rantrave.com/Rant/Mike-Huckabees-Costly-Mistakes.aspx

You apparently missed inputting on that one - feel free.
29 months ago: Huckabee is not my cup of tea.
More like a sandbagger that wants to play the lanes.

MY BAD.
29 months ago: His Hall of Fame placement should be based on what he did by himself while playing.

His gambling while being a player and manager should be handled strictly as they would playing the stock market with inside information. The two are not the same and can be treated as such. Jail time, fines, whatever for playing the odds.

A spot in the HoF should only be if he deserves one.

Other than that, they can shut the entire sports thing down and revert back to neighborhood teams and games for something to do (yeah, all professional sports, what a waste of time and money).
