YouTube Music Downloads at youGank

The latest trend to hit the internet to allow you to legally download music is youGANK. youGank was designed by a college student who spent his entire summer working on the project (not surprising when you watch the YouTube where he explains the product, and shares his music preference). It is supposedly legal as it uses the music from YouTube videos, and converts it to mp3 form. It is currently available for Windows users only, sorry Mac Attackers. Legal or not (for now), it is just the latest way to steal music, for better or worse.

Here is the info from the website on how it works: "youGANK is program designed to obtain digital music using Youtube. The Program asks for a Youtube URL, then downloads in high quality (mp4, the Ipod video format), then instantly converts it to an MP3, tags the track name and artist, then finally crops out the audio parts." The website has a free trial for those who are interested.

The product is legal as it doesn't serve copyrighted material, and is therefore different from other p2p desktop applications. Because of this, it should work on college campuses where other sites are blocked.

I am by no means condoning the use of youGANK, stealing is stealing, though any college student, past and present would be a hypocrite to say that they have never used a p2p or "borrowed" some music from others. If you are like the guy in the video, and you are that hard up for a ****cat Dolls song, you have a bigger issue than using an internet download program. I personally take pride in buying music from talented artists and supporting them, though I couldn't tell you the last album I purchased without a free trial of some sorts (Decemberists or Anathallo maybe).

What his software allows people to do, is convert an audio track from a copyrighted medium to another format. Moreover, it is illegal to distribute the copy. What his software allows is the illegal distribution process. His software would be no different that a device that, when attached to a DVD player would record the soundtrack and allow you to transfer it to your iPod. When you buy a movie, you do not also buy the rights to the a separated copy of the soundtrack. Likewise, when you buy a music video, you by the video, not the soundtrack. If you want the soundtrack, you have to buy it. His software and site will face one of two outcomes. If he cannot be stopped through legal injunction by the RIAA, artists will immediately pull all their videos from YouTube. Is this really what people want? Do they want the artists to pull all their videos?

I would not recommend that anyone use this site. The RIAA could technically subpoena the IP addresses of anyone who downloaded the software and charge people under the same laws they used to go after people who used the original Napster.

But the rest of them want to get rewarded for their music. I can hardly comprehend why on earth anyone would think they shouldn't get paid for their music? It's insane. The very same people that go on and on about how they plan to graduate from college and get a job and make money, STEAL music from companies and artists on line. What if you high paying job was working for a record company? Do people no realize that stealing a single song robs thousands of people along the chain? Everyone from the people who work in the recording studio to the cover art designer loses their livelihood. I wish these computer geniuses who squander their intelligence figuring out new and creative ways to STEAL music would use their powers for good.

There are plenty of legal download sites:

According to the RIAA, "One credible analysis by the Institute for Policy Innovation concludes that global music piracy causes $12.5 billion of economic losses every year, 71,060 U.S. jobs lost, a loss of $2.7 billion in workers' earnings, and a loss of $422 million in tax revenues, $291 million in personal income tax and $131 million in lost corporate income and production taxes. For copies of the report, please visit www.ipi.org."

Do YOU want to be responsible for the loss of 71,060 US jobs and $2.7 billion in lost wages?

Again, I take pride in buying music from artists that I deem worthy, and if I'm not willing to pay for an artist or song, I really don't need it anyway. Apart from those CDs that friends have shared to open my ears to an artists, that is...

I personally do not download music via torrents (I use AmazonMP3) but it just seems unnecessary and since both services are illegal why bother with some new program?
