The latest trend to hit the internet to allow you to legally download music is youGANK. youGank was designed by a college student who spent his entire summer working on the project (not surprising when you watch the YouTube where he explains the product, and shares his music preference). It is supposedly legal as it uses the music from YouTube videos, and converts it to mp3 form. It is currently available for Windows users only, sorry Mac Attackers. Legal or not (for now), it is just the latest way to steal music, for better or worse.
Here is the info from the website on how it works: "youGANK is program designed to obtain digital music using Youtube. The Program asks for a Youtube URL, then downloads in high quality (mp4, the Ipod video format), then instantly converts it to an MP3, tags the track name and artist, then finally crops out the audio parts." The website has a free trial for those who are interested.
The product is legal as it doesn't serve copyrighted material, and is therefore different from other p2p desktop applications. Because of this, it should work on college campuses where other sites are blocked.
I am by no means condoning the use of youGANK, stealing is stealing, though any college student, past and present would be a hypocrite to say that they have never used a p2p or "borrowed" some music from others. If you are like the guy in the video, and you are that hard up for a ****cat Dolls song, you have a bigger issue than using an internet download program. I personally take pride in buying music from talented artists and supporting them, though I couldn't tell you the last album I purchased without a free trial of some sorts (Decemberists or Anathallo maybe).
