Worst “Christians” in the World... dark side of light?

Where is the love?

I took a couple of hours out of my life today to ponder the message still being preached at Westboro Baptist (the "God Hates Fags" church). I am saddened by the pain both the public, and this group's children must endure because of this message of hate. These "preachers" are not trying to win anyone for Christ... rather they seem to enjoy the thought that people will be condemned to Hell. It is this type of "believer" that maligns the message of grace and forgiveness... finding themselves judged by their own words.

I don't mind at all pointing out the absurdity of Dawkins or the pseudo science of Evolution, but there is no greater wickedness than that of hate in the name of love. It would be one thing to warn of certain destruction; like rescuing someone from a burning building and putting your own life an resources on the line to prove it. It is quite another to laugh at those "burning" ...while picketing with signs that contradict the one that they claim they represent. The best known verse in the Bible says...

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

...God so loved, not hated, not laughed... these people misrepresent the God of the Bible. Another verse states clearly God's heart on the issue of the wicked...

"Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?...For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!" Ezekiel 18:23, 32

Brett McCracken, managing editor for Biola magazine writes movie reviews and features for Christianity Today as well as contributing frequently to Relevant magazine; has this to say about the "God Hates Fags" church...

"I've been critical in recent years of the trend of Christians saying things like "I love Jesus but hate Christians" or "Lord, save us from your followers," or similar variations on this "Christians are annoying but Jesus is cool" idea. But when there are people like the Phelps clan in Topeka who are masquerading as Christians and dragging that name in the filthiest kind of mud, I can't help but understand why so many within the church
are frantically trying to distance themselves from the designation."

When I saw the video and wondered how many others have seen the News with their hate signs... it made me wonder if I too come off as a hater. Do I give the message of hate without hope? Is there no balance to my rantings warning or exposing evils of mankind? Though I don't think that I would hear the very same ponderings from my counterparts on these issues... it isn't their message of God's love that's preached,
it's mine. I can be brutally hard on the "fake"... but can I be the same on the "faith"
that is being passed off as truth... be it mine or theirs?

I don't think that the "sinner" is blind to the destructive addictions, and the outcomes of the choices that are causing consequences beyond their control. I don't think that the loneliness, fear and pain caused by a life in defiance of God, is somewhat comforting when life comes crashing down. But I do think when there are those who can love beyond the hate and railings, beyond the cursing and spit, to a heart that needs understanding... it is then that one might even contemplate this thing called repentance.

My teacher, pastor, and friend... used to go down on the street where the hookers worked, and bring them hot coffee on cold evenings. They used to get them some food and shelter, and safety when things got dangerous. There was no doubt in the working girls mind that they were sinners... and no doubt either, that they were loved. Is that what I am about? Jesus din't hang out with the "sinners" because He wasn't good, He did it because His love was appreciated. It seems in the Church today, we don't appreciate what Christ has done for us... Jesus still seems more welcome down on the corner of hopeless and nowhere.

It has been described to me that this work of God can be compared to the work of a surgeon. We cut into peoples lives to provide some healing to take place. It just seems though many of us leave the patent on the table bleeding to death. Lord grant us the bandages of love and understanding to really mend the broken... and carry the feeble.
I thank God that there is only one "church" in America as openly hateful as in Westboro...
but I think we all know there are many more just as hateful on the inside. I hope that this is an example to us "Christians" to be healing instead of hating... and do what ever possible, to prevent anyone from missing out on Heaven... both now and later!

It is all very clear and easy to figure out. I never thought God wanted us to have to ponder his words like a puzzle. People that go in the opposite direction of goodness seem to be a type of war lord on a path of destruction trying to enforce their own defiance on anything that they don't understand. These type of people can not be talked to. They don't hear anything, they march on doing their awful deeds. I found these people never say they are sorry to anyone. I like this saying: "Better to Understand rather than be Understood." I've seen how the Bible's verses can be misused and twisted as you mentioned. Many different cults that say they are religious interpret the Bible within their own delusions and evil misguidance. I've seen these people batter older parents because they could and use the Bible to support their actions of control and arrogance. I've witnessed cruelty and coldness within families. They shut the real world out. They can make people pretty miserable on their road to gain some kind of superiority. It's early, but I didn't want to miss this one. Sunny

My 2 cents worth? I agree that no one should tar all Christians with the same brush as these misguided Westboros. I think the Westboros are suffering from a pathological and attention-seeking psychology and culture in their group. You can get people like this in any country, Christian and non-Christian.

However, I don't doubt that they feel they are reading their Bibles accurately. As you might have picked up, I don't think that Biblical justification trumps the use of our God-given (if you will) compassion and capacity for humility in the face of the unkown.

The Westboros remind me of that great and learned Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, an elevated and revered spiritual leader, who after decades of study, appointment as Chief Rabbi, and the grandest of accolades for his erudition and wisdom, was of the view that "Gentiles exist only to serve Jews" http://www.jpost.com/JewishWorld/JewishN...

All this is justified with by his religious texts and scholarship, which I would suggest have been wasted on him. Probably any intelligent moral child of 16, or the Good Samaritan, would be horrified by the learned Rabbi's grotesque, but scripturally justified views.

People can have contradictary interpretations of the same text, and think that their personal readings justify their actions, as if they themselves are no longer responsible.

I don't think scriptural interpretation exonerate us, or the Westboro's from using our best instincts and moral faculties.
14 months ago: "The comparative response to the challenge of a Gentile who asked that the Torah be explained to him while he stood on one foot, illustrates the character differences between Shammai and Hillel. Shammai dismissed the man. Hillel said: "What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow: this is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn" (Shab. 31a). Hillel recognized brotherly love as the fundamental principle of Jewish moral law. (Lev. xix. 18)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillel_the_...

(No, I'm not Torah spamming, Truthbrary.)
14 months ago: ". . . we should note the radical nature of the school of Hillel's claim that everyday experience can trump even biblically-based legal reasoning. When the law, as derived by exegesis and other accepted techniques, proves inconsistent with community norms, the school of Hillel suggests, the law may be abandoned for the sake of preventing an individual's shame."

Interesting. Something for the Westboros to reflect on, I say.

Books, teachings, doctrines.... don't mean diddly squat next to knowing the Author!

Since I have come to know the Author of life... everything else is just words on a page !:]
14 months ago: That these people claim to speak for God is particularly galling. Have they spoken to Him personally lately? Did they take notes? They know whom God hates, they think? Quite bizarre in light of Jesus' direction to love one's enemies.

14 months ago: That always irked me. Then I would say to myself...how arrogant is that. I don't get when an ordinary person who doesn't know up from down starts speaking in tongue as they read the Bible and tries to impress and influence people around them as if they know something we don't know and are on a special mission. I guess that is how they speak to God personally, in tonque. It looks and sounds more like a bad nightmare.

14 months ago: I've always been very in tune spiritually. I don't remember one time that I wasn't. I think it had a lot to do with living in the Country in the early growing years. You spend a lot of time by yourself looking for little friends and never finding them. With this experience, at a young age you learn to communicate between God and nature. I had a good foundation which was remarkable. Stan this I have seen happen over and over again in your remark: "People can have contradictary interpretations of the same text, and think that their personal readings justify their actions, as if they themselves are no longer responsible." How can you read a Bible and then go out in the World inflicting havoc on everyone you encounter? Nothing good from it. To me God is one of peace, and some people create conflict with everyone they come in contact with because they say they have the answers. Sometimes I think they feel not noticed and by doing this gives them purpose and arrogant strength. Sunny

14 months ago: Truthbrary I think the real bad ones are those who are tyrants and keep people imprisoned behind walls not to let them live freely. It is hard to comprehend that people who preach hate because they don't see their own faults have to gather together to outnumber others, who are vulnerable, by bullying methods don't realize they are the first to be hellbound. What a surprise they are in for.
On another subject, when an Artist creates a song, he may write about his own experiences and what is going on in their life at that moment because they are inspired. Thirty maybe forty years later - or possibly 2,000 years later that song may be sung but people will hear it in a different way in their time of life. Still the same basically, but different. It is heard in a contemporary time but with basic roots deriving from the original meaning and bringing it forward. I think God's Bible covers it all throughout the ages.
I wonder if people who say what you put there: "I love Jesus but hate Christians" are in a sense an occult. They're not declaring any church. They put a name to it, but it means nothing without the doctrine. I suppose it is easier for them. I've seen many of these so called religious groups and followers spooked out of their minds by phantoms and the unseen supernatural world. They don't look toward Jesus for protection but they still pray. That I don't get. They are the scared and frightened ones. Christian people have faith.
