Why we need to stop eating crap

America is the land of extremes: anything is possible. Unfortunately, the anything possible philosophy goes both ways. You get the extremely overweight, mostly people who cannot afford (or think they cannot afford healthy options) and the other extreme, the super skinny buffed plastic surged Barbie creations we get to see on all media outlets as the supposed "goal". That's what we are supposed to look like. That's what we are lead to believe is the ideal.

Well, I can tell you, both extremes are just plain wrong and bad for your health. In between these two huge dichotomies, are the evil empires: large corporations who's only interest is that we get fat and/or sick. Add to that the livelihood of fitness centers, sales of diet books, weight watcher programs, sales of magazines and eleventy billion different diets......the list goes on and on.

Don't get me wrong, I am not railing against self-help books and articles and endorsement of good health. What I am against is the creepy pervasive stench of intentional dumbing down to keep all these industries growing at an alarming rate and to the tune of huge profit margins.

Why is it, in the poorer areas of cities, streets are plastered with fast food joints? Giving the residents easy access to the worst options possible? Does the over excessive consumption of fizzy drinks, salty foods, artificial additives manipulate the common sense gene? Can someone explain to me how it makes sense to opt for a bag of potato chips as opposed to an apple or a carrot? That buying a can of soda pop is preferable to just drinking plain water? What is happening to this country? Why are fries preferable over a bowl of rice? Or oatmeal? Or vegetable soup? There is no argument that makes any of these processed foods preferable over things that actually grow on trees or sprout out of the ground.

A degree in rocket science is not compulsory to figure out if the food you put in your mouth doesn't grow on trees or bushes, most likely, it's bad for you. And by bad, I am talking death-threateningly bad. Cancer, diabetes, obesity. The percentage of people with diabetes, cancer and major health problems are one of the highest in the world. In the world.

Currently, the US ranks Nr. 3 after India and China on diabetes. Certainly, not all diseases can be attributed to nutrition or the avoidance of certain foods. Nevertheless, a decent diet and occasional exercise can only be a positive thing, surely.

The effect of these products do not only affect your physical well-being. US ranks Nr. 1 in mood disorders. Over-sugared, over-salted, over fizzified........is that a surprise? Healthy mind means healthy body and vice versa.

Use your common sense. Go back to the roots. Take that literally. People, do not let your health be gradually undermined by these Big Brother tactics, because that's what this is. You are nothing without your health. You do not need fitness centers, you do not need Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. You need common sense. And if that gene is recessive, something needs to be done to educate parents and children.

If you've got the money to pay a monthly fee to LA Fitness or whatever - great! But a run or brisk walk in the park is free. No excuses.

You know, I totally get it, in times of recession, there is depression. And a lot of us look for comfort food. Hey, I do. I eat cheeseburgers, I eat fries. I drink Coke Zero. I don't work out everyday. Far from it. But I try to get the balance right.

You can have all the money in the world, the greatest job, you can have it all, but you cannot buy health. That's where it starts.

Your body is the only thing you've got that is truly yours. And should be treated with the utmost care.

18 months ago: How do you manage with your 9-year-old? Impressive and well-done. I only just got my son to consider the attributes of water as opposed to Dr. Pepper. It's tough, what with all the ads. And thank you.

Franz Joszef is my avatar for a few reasons.
1) He ruled over diverse nationalities with justice.
2) He was beloved by the Jews of his time, in notable contrast to Nikolai II of Russia, a man I despise
3) Although I support a republican (small r) form of government, I believe that ultimately, it is the quality of the individuals in a society reaching critical collective mass that makes a system work or fail. My family has over the generations lived under different systems. Using as an avatar the face of an absolute monarch is a reminder to me not to waste time pinning my hopes for human betterment on one political system over another. On the other hand, the benevolent rule of Franz Joszef touched many lives in a positive way. Ultimately, history is not completely disconnected from the private lives of individuals.
I am pleased to note that someone who was born well after World War I and World War II ended recognises Franz Joszef

1a. "Does the over excessive consumption of fizzy drinks, salty foods, artificial additives manipulate the common sense gene?"

1b. These foods eliminate many nutrients in you body and mind. Yes these are mood changing foods. They bring you up and then down.

2a. "There is no argument that makes any of these processed foods preferable over things that actually grow on trees or sprout out of the ground."

2b. Because they eliminate minerals like magnesium, they are called comfort foods, for a short while. So when you are depressed you seek out the very foods that will then bring you down again.

3a. "Certainly, not all diseases can be attributed to nutrition or the avoidance of certain foods. Nevertheless, a decent diet and occasional exercise can only be a positive thing, surely."

3b. All illnesses are caused by nutritional deficiencies, poisons, toxins from chemicals, insects and animals and plants.

Junk foods are extremely acidic and also eliminate all your nutrients gradually until you get sick.

There many cuases of illnesses, but acidic junks foods are the worst to be addicted to.

There are many forms of addictions, and junk foods is the most popular addiction in the world.

The chemical industry sees to our addictions by giving us such good tasting acid foods.

It is planned and we are their junk food slaves.

Until the day of full and complete disclosure of all the toxins, Genetically mutated and irradiated foods, poisons and chemicals in our foods, we are hooked worst than a junkie.

But since we have a government that protects the chemical companies from giving us full disclosure, we are doomed to be sick.

I tell it like it is, I pull no punches, tell no lies, and I am as I am

Mamma wasn't a compulsive eater guided by her corporate implanted obsessions, partly because she had a mind of her own to know what she liked or didn't like, but also because she had an active life style. Bella had what they called hobbies back then and now the Politico correctness machine calls, interests. She had lots of friends to go with them and enough "small" business ventures to keep her independently wealthy of having to choose food by price. Today her daughter is no different. I love a good cut of beef once a month but will swear of burgers. Fried is for fatties and I always sit down to eat my meals with at least one more person and I love my figure. What my not so happy sisters lack is common sense and a vision

A corporation is a business model. Whether you get your fat laden cheeseburger at a McDonalds, at a sole proprietorship diner, or make it yourself, it's dietary affects as it pertains to dietary content are pretty much the same and the problem is not the cheeseburger itself or the demon 'fast food' pejorative but the propensity of sedentary people to eat double cheeseburgers with heaps of bacon, extra large frys, and the proverbial diet coke to offset the guilt. Or to put it succinctly, gluttony.

Now if only we could turn the clock back a hundred years or so before the days of corporate chain restaurants, processed foods, agribusiness, and all the other boogeyman's, we would subsist on a meager diet of all natural foods, living to the ripe old age of 45 to 50 and thus not having to worry about all these geriatric and obesity related diseases. Ah yes, the good 'ol days.
18 months ago: Mark: I'm not setting myself apart. I've just been lucky enough to see things from a perspective maybe not everyone had the chanc, so far, to get. I know corporations - large and small - are here to stay. Today's corporations have their tentacles wrapped around our lives similar to that the Catholic church had wrapped around medieval society. I understand the machinations of modern society: corporations provide work, drive the economy, etc. They are here to stay.

Having said that, it IS possible to at least understand what drives it, the forces behind it. If people understand that, then there can be some change.

Nobody is really free. We have to make do within the structure we all live in. Within that structure there are choices we can make for our benefit. Change does come from the bottom up.

They are designed as production machines for unhealthy filler foods that keep you coming back, instead of a satisfying meal. Think about it, if you pay 15 dollars for a steak or 2 for a double cheeseburger which one are you likely to eat more of? Which one will you likely get a better quality cut of meat from? Personally I don't care how they do their business because I don't do business with them.

That's exactly what I'm talking about - the uber-liberals have so much angst the 'evil' corporations with McDonalds often being demon #1, they foam at the mouth about form factors and of course, are weaseling in some way to tax form factors that they demonize.
