Why do the wealthiest pay the least

I thought the newly elected house reps were going to change the way the rich & CEO's pay more not less. Why do you think that happens (could be the people we elect are also on those corp payrolls)

It is almost like they can purchase the goverment for their own agendas.
Maybe a new reguirement for running for public office should be no lawyers,
no fortune 500 club members, no company that holds their funds overseas.

The state that elects them should pay their salary and they must use only the states health plan from which they were elected. (just like the rest of us Americans) Four years in and then out for ten years.

13 months ago: oh so I get it the mass public is out of work unpaid and has no corparate lawyers so the elderly poor and unwed will yet again foot the tab for the rich.
13 months ago: As Americans were have been raised to think everyone should be treated fair and square I guess the elected politicians are not from this country maybe the mideast where they are able to live by two sets of rules.
13 months ago: Fair and Square? Really? Wait while I run out of my government subsidized house and check on the 6 Escalades parked in the front yard. After that I must return to check on the pantry full of government subsidized food. Next I must set all of my air conditioning to about 70 degrees to keep my government subsidized utilities. Did I mention that it is rough getting out of bed early ehough to rush the 12 kids off to school for their government subsidized breakfast and lunch. Too bad I have to break away from my busy day at the beauty parlor to pick the kids up from school....Uh...forgot...I don't... they have government subsidized transportation...

Maybe I can rent out another room to family. Since I only have 3 full families living with me...in a single family home...

Maybe the IRS should look hard at the addresses on all returns to cross check them to persons receiving any form of subsidies.

It's simple really.

If politicians (Congress) write the Laws and you are rich enough you can get "your guy" (or gal) elected then they will vote the way you want them to on whatever you want. So corporations "buy" who they can put in Congress and like magic laws get changed.

Here we are unemployed, no health care, and he is going around with the slogan: "You're fired" on his show. His show is awful, and it tells me exactly what kind of a person he would be if he were President. Who cares?
Presidents still have to have that special something. No matter who puts up the money Presidents are still born to it. We have just been unlucky to find anyone good to run.
Sharon good comment.

GE, a public corporation, paid BILLIONS in taxes, they matched the Social Security contributions of tens of thousands of American workers, and provided incomes for ten of thousands of employees to pay taxes on. When they record big profits, it doesn't go home with one person, it is split with the shareholders according to the amount of stock they hold. Still, 10% of the top earners pay over 50% of all income taxes collected.

The CEO thing is just another buggaboo to keep your attention diverted from who the real villains are. Even if there were 1000 CEO's who each made a 500 million dollars a year, it would only work out to 500 billion. Tax that at 50% and you get 250 billion. The deficit for 2011 is 1.6 trillion. Subtract your new 250 billion and you still have a deficit of 1.35 trillion. Tax it at 100% and you still have a 1.1 trillion deficit.
13 months ago: It is all fair when your talking about how someone else needs to pay for your burden. So you don't have too.
13 months ago: It was on a few different regular (more or less neutral) news sources (not Fox or MSNBC) that GE paid no taxes, because they took losses or something, I only saw the headline.
13 months ago: Gang- I would rather pay all the subs to the people and not to corparate
execs. If we can vote on line for a dance star or american idol maybe we should also be able to do the same with public officials. Just kinda buzz them out of goverment :)

The two party system is dysfunctional and designed so that one individual can throw a monkey wrench and stop the entire works so nothing gets done. The filibuster system should be eliminated.

We need to remove all restrictions on multiple parties and have proportional representation. Preference voting should be used in all elections so voting for a third or forth party candidate is not a spoiler vote.

When representatives vote on anything, first it should be a simple majority vote on whether to act. Then at least three options should be written up. Then instant runnoff or preference voting should be used to determine which is the best plan.

This would force all of the representatives to cooperate and do what is best for the country instead of catering to their bases or their corporate sponsors, which results in partisan gridlock or radical overreach.

All lobbying money should be eliminated, and all elections government funded so representatives don't have to spend 85% of their time begging for money which they then have to repay with special privileges.
